blake12 23 Report post Posted September 21, 2017 Sorry in advance if this is wrong area. First post here. Also looking to buy first European car.... Im reasonably set on a 335i, maybe spend 20-30k and get one that's done below 80,000km... I happy to factor in some kind of insurance or warrenty into my cost for the car. But it's really hard to find the best info about this. I understand the cost of maintenance, potential problems of a 335i etc. And that the n54 is now not covered by BMW warrenty for cars of the year I would be looking at in my price range Does bmw sell an extended/new warranty, and/or what are you guys/girls experiences with a third party breakdown cover. I just got a quote for $8000 per year covered at $1400 per annum but the excess was $450 at a time..... Anything else I should be weary of buying a 335i? I'm getting a little sick of having to rev my k20 past 6k to have fun Cheers
Jacko 2156 Report post Posted September 21, 2017 Consider K's to be very secondary to the actual condition of the vehicle and its service history is my advice, get a BMW pro to go over it with a fine tooth come before handing money over as well. Most mechanical warranties are BS

Most mechanical warranties are BS The only thing that is bs is what has been said here. Speaking first hand, I have a 335i and a Autosure Warranty. It paid for itself in the first 3 months after my waterpump gave up. I would say in 2.5 years of ownership the maintenance bill (preventative & non preventative) is sitting at 5k with the warranty picking up approx 50% of the tab. Get the vehicle checked by a reputable BMW workshop and ensure you get a warranty.
Matth5 471 Report post Posted September 21, 2017 (edited) Autosure has been good to me. Many dealers offer Autosure warranties, would highly recommend it for a 335i. It's saved me thousands. Only pain is the service requirements (no DIY allowed, officially) and they don't like modifications so you need to tread carefully. Definitely have a BMW specialist do the PPI, well worth it. You can get N55s in that price range as well. Don't make quite as much power on the stock turbos (when tuned) but they have a better reputation for reliability, although mine still would be demolishing my savings if not for the warranty. Really on these cars it only takes one issue for the warranty to pay for itself. How Autosure is willing to warranty these cars is beyond me, they must not have taken a close look at this model and what it's costing them Edited September 21, 2017 by Matth5

If you bought from a dealer, the CGA covers you for it imploding within 3 months.
blake12 23 Report post Posted September 21, 2017 thanks good answers what if I were to import myself, can I get bmw check for history somehow or does it have to be done physically in japan?

Carjam has a service for vehicle history from Japan. https://carjam.co.nz/japan-history/ EDIT: Importing yourself is quite interesting. If you'll be using a service to do it for you, the odds of actually saving money versus buying here are quite small. All the savings get eaten up by fees (at least for the cars I looked at.) That being said, true to form the last car I had an Autosure warranty on I didn’t need to use it - and it was a European vehicle so could have just saved the money I guess... For what it’s worth, my mechanic does not work with any warranty other than Autosure - apparently the others are unwilling to pay them what they want per hour. I don’t know if that’s just because where I go is particularly fussy or a widespread thing. But something you might want to consider.
Jacko 2156 Report post Posted September 21, 2017 The term of the CGA depends on bunch of factors, 3 months was an example referring to 3 series waterpump issue and would be covered by pretty much anyones definition of "reasonable" if it went to court! Dealers love autosure etc. It gives them an easy out from the CGA, as they can just tell you to use your warranty, and then they get to take a cut of selling the policy, its win win for them

I’ve had a couple of dealers do small fixes on cars and it’s almost always the cheapest and nastiest job possible. That might be different if it’s the official main BMW dealer selling you the car but I suspect most of us are buying from others.

blake12 23 Report post Posted September 21, 2017 Yeh been emailing them. Prob just pay two years up front, look at it as part of the cost of the car, and then upgrade again after two years. Pleasantly surprised at cost of the autosure actually!
