1999 E39 540i M sport - 115k - immaculate

Recommended Posts

Hi guys, im putting the feelers out to see if there might be any interest in my E39 540i Motorsport.

I bought it from a guy in Christchurch who loved and cared for it to the enth degree and spent thousands keeping it in top nick over the years he had it. I bought it from him with 99k on the clock January 2017. It now has 116k.

The PPI from Christchurch BMW came back as the best example of an E39 they had seen in years.

Ive recently spent 9k on new guides, chains, vanos gears with upgraded Besian Seals, oil pump etc etc (full parts list on request) all done at Winger BMW here in Wellington.

Car will come with a 2 year Autosure Mechanical warranty.

The car is beautiful, powerful and immaculate apart from a couple of scuffs under the front bumper.

Its an M-sport but was ordered with non M-sport bumpers from BMW Japan (not sure why).

Everything is stock, no modifications and everything works.

The reason for selling is that i could well be taking a job in the states and would need to offload this fairly quickly. I should know in the next 2 months.

If it doesn't get the price i want It'll be coming stateside with me so no low ballers.

Ideally looking for 8-9k NZD

Nice E39 you got there.

Below is the build sheet

1998 build with goodies like sports seats, msport suspension, msport steering wheel.

In my opinion, this is a factory non msport car but with the few msport options ticked when originally ordered rather than a msport with standard bumpers.

Easiest giveaway imo is all msport has the option code for "anthracite interior" which translates to black/dark grey headlining/pillar fabric as opposed to the light grey.

Nevertheless, looks like a very well sorted car especially with all that work done to it it must drive like new!

What is ‘S925ADummy-SALAPA’?

Probably means no translation was available from the original source.

S925A is a 'Dispatch Protection Package' - I suspect this is something (perhaps the white film you sometimes see on new cars on a transporter?) that was applied to the car in order to protect on it's journey from the manufacturing plant to it's destination, which would normally be the first place of registration.

Nice car, any more photos? Not sure it would be that easy to get into the US.

If he’s American and going home, it isn’t too hard to import.

If hes he’s a kiwi going temporarily, it isn’t too hard to import either, but he rules are very strict and the car has to leave with him at the other end too. Cost-wise, this is not a good car to do this with, in my opinion.

I think also if it’s true m-tech the chassis id will be wbs.... compared to wba..... ??? Could be wrong?

No, only M3s etc are WBS, I think even the e12 M535i is WBA.

I too don’t see the economics of exporting it to the states. It’d be cheaper to buy one over there plus the steering wheel would be on the right place.

Cheers Chris, could I ask about the engine work bearing in mind that Jeff Gray ChCh gave it a clean bill of health when you bought it ? That`s a big bill for preventative maintenance or did the chain guides and Vanos suddenly go on it ??

Regards,

Ray

Hi Ray, yeah they just went. I was surprised too.

The guides broke and they replaced the whole lot. Ive got the parts list for what they changed. Whilst they were doing it I got rebuilt vanos gears with the upgraded seals brought in from the states. Figured that whilst the engine was pulled apart to that extent that they should be done too to save on labour costs further down the line.
