MD335 12 Report post Posted September 12, 2018 At 2000 rpm (just over 100kmh) ive noticed that my E91 335i seems to stutter. The car acts as if I am slightly increasing and decreasing the throttle by tiny amounts when I’m not. This doesn’t happen at just under 2000rpm (say 98 kms) or above that (say 105 img and above). The car is just not a smooth drive at that point. Anybody got any suggestions as to what it might be? Thanks in anticipation.
B.M.W Ltd 950 Report post Posted September 13, 2018 I presume the vehicle is auto and not DCT ?
MD335 12 Report post Posted September 13, 2018 Yes - sorry should have said
B.M.W Ltd 950 Report post Posted September 13, 2018 That sounds very much like the torque converter lock up clutch misbehaving. Lock up is around 2000rpm give or take 100rpm. I suggest you take it to a reputable BMW specialist, the dealers or a reliable transmission specialist and get it checked before it causes any other issues. It could also be an engine issue. qube 3570 Report post Posted September 13, 2018 Could be so many things, engine related, air/fuel related, spark plugs or coils etc. Take Glenns advise and get it scanned/checked by a BMW mechanic. (Looks like you are both Hyundai Kona drivers so gotta trust each other!)
B.M.W Ltd 950 Report post Posted September 13, 2018 I didn't see the Kona in the profile because I'm not a stalker ? How do you like your Kona Martin ? I'm luvin mine. Done 2,000km in it now and I coudn't wish for anything else at the moment. It's a sh*t load of fun. I'm just waiting for my speed camera ticket in the mail from the weekend in Tauranga. MD335 12 Report post Posted September 13, 2018 Hey Glenn, the Kona is great fun and love the fact that it's tricked up with all the gadgets! Had it for about 9 months now (15,000km) and going well. its actually the 3rd Hyundai we've had (Kona, Veloster, and Tuscon) and we've like each of them in their own ways. Found one little "problem" - the service interval was set incorrectly to 15,000kms whereas it should have been 10,000 and the dealer berated me for missing the service schedule. I had to point out that they set it to 15k in the first place. Ah well next service in 5,000kms then. BTW - any recommended BMW mechanics in Welling/Hutt valley? Or do I just bite the bullet and take it to the dealer?
B.M.W Ltd 950 Report post Posted September 13, 2018 I don't personally know anyone down in Welly I could recommend. Someones bound to chime in. Do you have MBI policy ? You can reset the service interval in the Kona
MD335 12 Report post Posted September 13, 2018 Fortunately yes I do have MBI so dealer not necessarily a problem. Yeah I found out about resetting the interval afterwards! And I just assumed that it would have been set correctly by the dealer on delivery. DOH!
B.M.W Ltd 950 Report post Posted September 13, 2018 Who's the MBI with ?

I took mine to a euro "specialist" in the Hutt and didn't have a great experience - following stuff I've gone to Winger and they've been fine (also sorted MBI work too). YMMV. Check with them as far as getting the right repairer in that area. Don't talk to office staff . Talk to a claims officer. Or call me tomorrow. BozzaFC 300 Report post Posted September 13, 2018 Have heard good things about Auto 38, Page European and of course Winger in Wellington. Haven't been to any of them personally, yet
Olaf 3309 Report post Posted September 13, 2018 Recommendations based on experience: 1. take it to Jon @ Auto38 in Newtown, Indepenent BMW and Euro Specialists. He's excellent, well-known and respected in the BMW community. 2. 2nd recommendation: Page European, Home St. Also Indepenent BMW and Euro Specialists. Both deal with the insurers for MBI policies. Let us know how you get on.
MD335 12 Report post Posted September 27, 2018 Car has just been in to Auto 38 in Newtown. Jon really knows his stuff, nice friendly guy too. Had a full diag check with nothing showing of any relevance and Jon couldn't reproduce the fault on test drive. Diags confirm Torque lockup clutch operating correctly so it's still a bit of a mystery. I'm gonna have to drive it some more and see if I can reproduce the fault. So good news in one way but a bit of a mystery in another.
