Gaz 1060 Report post Posted August 30, 2020 @Olaf haven't done on before but e30zone suggests either all e30 or e36 https://www.e30zone.net/e30wiki/index.php?title=Steering_Rack_Conversions
modz 148 Report post Posted August 30, 2020 I use e36 outers and e30 inners. E36 outers cheapest from partmaster @Olaf if you need any parts or help let me know mate

You must use e46 inners or machine them (as I did) to allow for internal venting. Neither e30 nor e36 inners are compatible with the e46 rack venting mechanism. For outers, total length (inner+outer) comes into play. So you want approx the same length as e30+e30 with the required e46+???. If e36 and e30 outers are the same length you can use either, if they're not then you'll have to work out what gives you the same overall length (or sacrifice alignment adjustment). For those that have used inners without venting grooves on an e46 rack you're going to blow out boots and ingest volumes of crap that will ruin your rack in short time.
nick496 268 Report post Posted August 30, 2020 I've done the swap in the E30, E46 inners, E36 outers. As M3AN says, you can use E36/E30 inners, but you'll need another purple tag rack in a short time. 1
Olaf 3317 Report post Posted August 30, 2020 many thanks @modz @Gaz @M3AN and @nick496 for getting back to me, much appreciated. I had e46 inners in my parts stash for years, though used them on my... e46, oddly enough. e46 inners, e36 outers for this lad. game on.

I bought a purple tag rack for my 330i motorsport - ah well I guess I have a spare now . . . . . Wonder what it would take to put it in the e39 ????? or do they already have them too? EDIT: BTW, is there any way to adjust out radial play in the pinion shaft? Edited September 3, 2020 by BlackAngel added

Not in E39 that I'm aware of, and I've looked under plenty. Worth checking your 330i M to see if it does. Super easy, jack up the front and look at the underside of the steering column.
