Finally fixed one of the more worrying previous repairs carried out on the old girl,  at some stage someone had damaged the section of the drivers door card that covers the airbag, and decided to turn it into a home made Claymore mine by repairing it with a good solid layer of Araldite!

I shudder to think what this would have done to me if the airbag had ever deployed!!

As you can see there is some silicone in there as well, just in case.

Replaced with a good door card from Pick a part, unfortunately it was from an electric seat car so it has the memory buttons which mine has no need for ( manual leather heated seats for the win) so I will keep an eye out for a correct replacement, but in the meantime this one won't cut me in half if the worst happens!

Replaced left rear window lifter mechanism,  the casting that carries the window was twisted and cracked and the cable had lost its little ferrule that keeps it in place!

Also gave it a long overdue wash, I keep thinking I should give it a polish, but the paint is so bad I think it would be a wasted effort.

Swapped over the complete toolkit from pick a part, resisted the urge to include the spark plug tool to make it totally complete!!

Got sick of seeing the ABS and ASC lights, plus the speedo not working was really screwing up my fuel economy, so pulled the ABS unit out to send off for repair.

Also managed to pick up a replacement upper tailgate section with a much better steel / rust ratio that the current one, will have to repaint it but it will tidy that issue up nicely,

And happily changing the front brake pads has solved the God awful squealing issue, one less reason not to drive it!

Now to paint the style 66s and get them on....

So, latest WOF was a bit of a disaster, LCM decided to pick that day to sh1t itself so failed on about 8 lights not working and cracked rear subframe bushes, which I have bought but apparently having them in boxes in the boot isn't good enough!! 

I have a spare LCM lying around ( I mean, who doesn't) so I just have to get it coded and thats done, then fit the subframe bushes.

Oddly they put the red stamp on the checksheet about not painting rust repairs until they are inspected but didn't fail it on any rust!

On a more positive note repaired ABS module is now in the car and working perfectly!

The old girl gives and the old girl takes away....

You're supposed to have the subframe bushes IN the glovebox... otherwise it doesn't count!

Right, time to tackle the rear subframe bushes! I have decided to remove the rear subframe from the car to do this, I have my reasons but the main one is that I have a press to remove and install the bushes, and I want to replace some suspension arms and bushes at the same time, so why not! I may come to regret my decision.....

Firstly, up on Jack stands, wheels off, disconnect air springs, so far so good!

Brake calipers off, ride height sensors, ABS sensors, lower shock bolts all out, one side down, one to go. I think the exhaust is going to be the biggest hassle as it is one piece from the muffler to the turbo!

something has been cut out of the front and a straight pipe welded in, not sure what was there originally.

Flexi, bellows or the factory cat? BMW does seem to love 1 piece exhaust systems, do think it is a production/performance efficiency thing? I thought the rear end on the M5 would have a flange, but it also appears to be one piece to the headers.

I assumed it was a resonator of some kind, but it could have been a cat/ dpf of some kind ( if old diesels had cats?)

Its not a major problem as its just a couple of quite rusty bolts to the turbo, what could go wrong?

Just wrench on them hard, as a Subaru owner I've followed this process many times and never had any problems with broken turbo studs..... I'm always impressed with your dedication to keeping these cars on the road.

hand brake cables disconnected, driveshaft unbolted, subframe bolts out and hey presto!

Most of the bits unbolted now, bushes are absolutely knackered!

Both of the sway bar links fell apart, so they will be getting replaced as well!

All apart, water blasted 24 years of experience off the subframe, everything else will get a clean up as well, time to order some parts.....

So far, so good! 2 bushes out with no drama.  A little bit of heat and some gentle persuasion, and in the fluke of the decade I found a piece of aluminium from the leg of an old computer desk that was a perfect fit for the size of the bush and even had an indent in the center the correct size to push them out with!!

I took the opportunity to remind my wife that I am a genius for keeping everything that " looks like it might be useful someday" ;)
