NZ New.  Option sparse.  But you don't see many in good condition for sale these days.

  • Half the fuel consumption.
  • M57 is one of the most bulletproof engines BMW has ever produced.
  • More torque than an M3.

What's the drawbacks then, just the sound ?

  • Servicing is more expensive being a turbo diesel.
  • Parts aren't as easily available due to not being as common as M54's.
  • Diesels in general don't particularly like short trips so isn't ideal if all you're doing is commuting 5km to work and back every day. They need a good longer bash at full operating temperature on a regular basis to prevent EGR valves and such from clogging up.
  • The general "tractor" stereotype I guess.

Early (pre TU2) M57's are iron block, so are more nose heavy than the M54 engined cars. This will be the TU 3.0L with the updated Garrett turbo.

BMW paid particular attention to making the M57 sound less like a tractor than most other diesels, they've got a real growl through the rev range.

Same engine as the larger 5 and 7 series cars so an easy +15hp and 90nm with a software change.

Being auto it will still have swirl flaps (the manuals didn't for some reason).

I think I need to drive one, quite fancy an e60 530d touring.

I often look at the German autotrader where of course there are many diesels, some with huge miles yet still retaining value.

Germans appear to maintain vehicles much better than here
