After attempting a fluid change on a broken e34 540 trans, with the car on stands, I swore I'd pay someone to do it next time. It's messy, it's smelly, and tbh for the sake of a couple of hundy, much better left to a pro with a hoist and a proper flush machine. Also this way you know you have replaced all old fluid in one shot. Sent from my HTC_PN071 using Tapatalk

Can think of a hundy better things to learn on than a shitty trans fluid flush.

OK boys, this thread has run it's course. 3 pages to answer one question? At least we now know the way to get an answer around here. Better warn admin that we'll be expecting an influx of new "female" members.

Are you getting it re-upolstered? How much? Picked up a M-sport x-brace from Ray to go on the M3, and new centre rear section (to replace the one with the tape holders lol) console for the e30. Got the tie rod boots sorted. (thanks for the tip dubman) New front struts installed and all seems good. The steering flex joint seems to be rattling about a bit so i'll order a new one of those. Rear windscreen seals coming from Schmeidmann for the M3. Also looking to replace the windscreen cowling on the M3. I know Dave you were looking at this too? There is a bit of a writeup here (looks easy as) http://www.bimmerdiy.com/diy/e36cowling/ Might see how much the stealership will let them go for. I'll let you know Dave.

bottle caps are not 15" wheels guys. In any case: the insurance company has probably already taken photos of your car with the RS on them, so its possibly too late, and "frauding" them they wont take to kindly to that. if you are going to take the wheels, you might as well take the stereo, the steering wheel, the seats…. where does the list end. I suggest you let them take the car, have them pay out, and tell them that you want first option to buy the car back. Insurance companies are not an entity you f**k round with, because you will never get insurance again etc. Thats why you have insurance in the first place

Reco the torque convertor,(great time to get every last drop of old oil out of the system). Swap out GM module and maybe ign. switch. That should sort 95% of your issues. Get us to do it (can`t be done for free) or ask for help from these well meaning bimmersporters who have been giving you their pearls of wisdom. The solution is very simple.

That grinding sound is not healthy though... It could may well turn out not to be what ya think until you get some one who knows these transmissions well to have a look at it. To have to shell out for new fluid, then only to have to do it again because the trans needs dismantling would be such a waste. My old 540i made this very same grinding sound going up college hill @ 50 - 60k's just cruising, but it was not as loud as yours sounds in that clip, you could barely hear it - This leads me to believe that the TC in your is on it's very last legs, and that replacing the fluid won't do anything. IMO get it diagnosed properly before spending bucks on new fluid.

Like you, I'm keen to learn to do as much to the car as possible but when it relates to an absolutely critical part of the car (and one that is horribly expensive to replace if you f*ck it up) I prefer to pay the pros and get it done right. Auto trans service is not the expensive - the fluid is the most expensive bit and you'll pay for that regardless - and you'll know that it's been flushed and serviced properly. Mine was 100 times better after a pro service when I bought the car last year.
