My Techno Violet 540is sat on FB for a while, the seller was a bit old school and really hated stupid questions, once we got some dialogue going we agreed on the price. It was below $20k. Ironically about 6 months after I bought it, I was parked in Lower Hutt and a chap came up to me and asked if it was for sale, he offered $25k without promting. I declined, but he gave me his number if I changed my mind. I think that prices for a lot of cars are quite cheap now, a buyers market so to speak. That said good cars should get decent money.

Another problem needing solving with this conversion is oil level measurement - the N54 never came with a physical dipstick, relying instead on checking the oil level via the oil level sensor. While it is possible to use a scan tool to measure the oil level, I'd prefer to have a quick and easy way of doing this on the go, leading me down the next rabbit hole - designing an in-cluster display to show the oil level (and any other interesting information, such as exact vehicle speed, oil/coolant temperature, etc). The design is based on an off-the-shelf SPI display, paired with a custom (own design) circuit board using a PIC32MK with a single CAN channel: 3D print a housing for the screen out of ABS (don't worry, this cluster isn't the actual cluster I'll be using in the vehicle, just a testing one): Test fitting and adjusting positioning with the cluster face loosely fitted:

Should probably learn how to spell losers (loosers?) if they're gonna call people that.

Tinkered on the sled a bit further. Got the torn CV boot replaced, the axle came out and went back in painlessly enough so that's the only obvious WoF concern taken care of. Also had a mate do his magic polishing up the headlights that were starting to go all foggy and yellow. Got the lights out to make the job a bit easier, which turned out to be way more involved that I'd anticipated - the headlight housing protrudes downwards and gets caught behind the bumper and you can't lift them up because of the radiator support so the bumper cover needs to come forward quite a bit to have enough room to wiggle the lights out. E46/E39's are a breeze in comparison. Just waiting on an order of chrome bulbs to swap out those yucky ambers. Same day the EGR delete kit arrived so quickly threw that in the next morning as well. Looks a quality kit from Bimmertune, took roughly 3 weeks to arrive which isn't too bad over the festive period and especially with shipping being free. The parts fit well at both ends and should permanently eliminate sludge buildup as a worry. Weight reduction. Taking the new sled to Nelson tomorrow, will see how it fares on its inaugural proper road trip and will dig into fluid services once I'm back.

Bump... Have done a big price drop as need it gone. $8.5K ONO. More powerful, faster, lighter, more luxurious and (in my opinion) A LOT cooler than a Version R Colt.

It was contemplated but would be less "oe-like" - either having to modify the sump, or using parts from the BMW Motorsport catalogue that replace the oil level sensor, which then has a flow-on effect on the DME. Adding the screen was more in line with modern BMW and opens up additional opportunities. The DME does have the oil height in millimetres, which can be correlated to the oil level in litres. This isn't sent out over CAN, however - a simplified oil level overview is sent (and typically consumed by the instrument cluster in a factory vehicle).
