Hey all, new to the BMW community with the purchase of this 02 530i So far everything that's needed to be done maintenance wise has been done by the previous owner however there is a little bit of exterior cosmetic damage which will be an easy fix (there's an 02 528i in the orient blue metallic at pickapart that is in pretty good exterior condition that I'll go take panels off soon)... Currently on my list of things to do include: Retrofitting RF Locking system (currently Jap IR Key) New head unit (and sound system) LED Angel lights and fogs New wheels or recondition current ones Possible repaint in San Marino Blue next year

No it doesnt that reservoir is exactly that an expansion tank. Unless it is completely empty it won’t cause an issue. Get INPA and get live readouts of the pump pressure and temp ect it will give you all the readings you need to see including adaptation readings for each gear. If you don’t know what you are looking it bring it to me or take it to Ray at Hellbm.

Doubt it would be a brush issue If pump motor fails to build pressure it will go into neutral and fail to engage any gear usually. The symptoms sounds like it is getting pressure resistence so it does not go up or down (1 and 4) along the travel but it rotates fine. four possibilities by what you have described - gearbox readaptation required as it is struggling to find the correct gear so it is experiencing resistance beyond the maximum value for it to travel up or down (ie north south engagement) but not left or right or vice versa. temperature sensor issue on the smg pump unit - these fail like the rear subframe and if experiencing high temperature you will get temperamental issues with gear engagement. But the programming for this in the module is for it to drop into neutral so unlikely. Third possibility - broken indent spring in the gearbox (one of three but likely one only) - very possible as you described 1st gear and that’s the big indent spring on the top of the gearbox and that breaks all the time. Lastly clutch issue so the clutch isn’t disengaging completely for the gearbox to engage gears - most likely if the clutch is old - most likely failure is the cheap plastic pivot pin on the clutch release fork - when this fails the clutch does not diaengage 100% (more like 60%) with the clutch fully in ... this will result in pressure resistence in the system and cause it to not engage selected gear. My money is on the last one if old clutch. A scan and readaptation will tell you exactly what is wrong.

So the last few weeks have been hectic. I haven't actually managed to do anything with this as yet, have been in touch with the Alpina Archive register, sent them a bunch of pics and they came back asking more questions, not stating it was a fake - so hopefully they can come back with a definitive answer. Currently sitting looking at the original certificate of registration. Car was first registered in Nelson 28/11/2000, with an odometer reading of 47,941k's. The registered owner is the guy I bought it off - so that part of the whole story checks out, it is a one NZ owner car, and he didn't do a lot of travel in it. So here's hoping the rest of the story checks out ?. Will update when I hear more.

Cumulative update. Changed the diff oil and thermostat. Made some E28 coffee. The not so good; the drivers door lock broke and the odometer finally died at 164000Km Spent last weekend doing the gumboot rally in it, performed flawlessly for 1000Km with the only casualty being the 30 year old suspension (All the bushings decided they'd had enough). Somehow managed 10.5L/100Km despite driving over both the Gentle Annie and Forgotten highway. I think I may just keep the M20 in it rather than swapping to the M30 with economy like that, and since the fun factor of the eta still had me smiling like a Cheshire cat despite being embarrassed by a Lada (my suspension was gone by that point and the lada was not stock..) Will look into a complete suspension rebuild as well as moving to my dogbone E28 subframe and LSD. Any suggestions on what bushings, shocks etc to go for?
