It has got to the stage now with technoligy that you dont repair anything. Just like toasters, its cheaper to buy a new one. This is now starting to creep into the automtive industry as well. It becomes uneconomical to repair alot of things these days, including engines and transmissions.... just fit a new one...or buy a new car.... old car goes to people like Ray @ HELLBM

Why go turbo ? more goes wrong with turbo set ups. I'd go M52B28 + SC if it was me with no tuning issues...just a remap and spend more money on suspension, brakes & certification
-
It could be either / or
-
Then it is the resistor block thats faulty. It will also flatten your battery

When you turn the heater off....what fan speed does is sound like its on...high speed ???
-
The heater fan resistor block that controls fan speeds is probably faulty.... do all the fan speeds work ?

If you go from Auto to Manual, you leave out the Auto control unit and recode the DME for manual -
Great to see its all on the way now. Will keep an eye on this thread BTW just swap the sensors over for the speedo. Thats what I do when changing diffs from small case to medium case
-
If it happens again ...I'd get them to check the DME for water / moisture and check that there are no dry solder joints on the circuit board... another problem that the older cars suffer from
-
I might take you up on that. The versions I'm running on all our systems here at work have dropped E30's off I should have made copies of these discs and not leant out the originals I'll see if I can get a set of originals from BMW NZ.. if not I'll give you a PM BTW: Thanks for the offer
-
They probably just did a recode of the DME to make sure there are no software glitches E36's are prone for getting water in the DME... do you park it outside or in the garage? Was it raining heavy the day it happened ?
-
If you check ETK.... they give various part numbers for different M20's.... what are you measuring ... diameters, ramp heights or overlap ? E30 320 Pre Cat 11 31 9 058 572 E30 320 With Cat 11 31 1 716 139 E30 323 with Cat 11 31 9 058 577 E30 325 Pre Cat 11 31 1 706 655 E30 325 With Cat 11 31 1 716 138 Please tell me what I'm missing ??

Need to check it again for you... did we drive the car with the scanner hooked up and check live data last time you called in ??
-
Thats a bit of a hard one... not being able to test the car or read fault codes or live data. The only thing I can think of is that it may have had low battery voltage... the starter would draw available current and not allow the rest of the systems to operate... I've had that happen a couple of times. How old is the battery and is it the right one for the car ??

Motronic cars with the later model round diagnostic plug has minimal diagnostic capability. Most faults have to be diagnosed the old fashion way... Brains & the correct tools

Relationship = She tells you what to do or not to do.......you either do it or dont.... depending on what she wants ? Then you get MARRIED

If you could get it to me Conrad and I could sort all your issues out.... I like challenges We had a similar problem with an E36 316 I a few months ago...the problem is there arent many around at the wreckers to get replacement parts. Took us ages to find an AFM with the right numbers, the dealers wanted $1600 for one...X Germany Yes I know your out of town, but you could get it transported up here

Have a great day mate From Glenn & the Team
-
Watch out with camshaft grinds on Autos... you might get stalling issues because of camshaft overlap. Manual conversion would make what your doing alot better
-
The one in the centre is the brake wear indicator, the one on the right is brake fluid level
-
I'm still going with a AFM on this one...if its sticking, it wont come up with a fault code for the AFM as the AFM is still working & returning a signal to the DME, the engine will run lean and detonate...causing the knock sensor/s to be triggered, which would retard ignition causing the car not to perform as well , however it still should run & accelorate....but not as lively if there was no fault... checking live data while driving should indicate whats going on
