  1. Not sure what you have done here. If spacer was on crank side then flywheel would be further away & make the problem worse -starter pinion mesh would be shallower.

Starters are the same - manual to auto & early (big) to late (small) -either fit all.

Pinion size is smaller on late unit but it is offset closer to center in front bracket so meshes the same.

One thought - Did the flywheel seat properly when bolting up to the crank?

  2. put a post up a few weeks ago about the best way to do the clutch on my e30 325i.

from what responce i got you guys made it sound like it was hard.

a hoist a rattle gun and a few sockets and extenstions and the flywheel was down the road at bnt in 30 min. no messing round with dropping engine mounts or subframes.

but anyway to the point.. while its out im going to do the gearbox oil. what are the recomendations for oil to use?

ive got some 75w90 hanging around. would this be ok or is this a little too thin?

Who said manuals were hard? - its the auto's that are a pain.

I use Castrol VMX 5 speed - seems good

  3. My drivers side indicator blinker has stopped working, I have tried 3 different bulbs and still no go.

Im not the best with electronic things so does anyone have any idea how to fix it or why it wont be working?

Or should I just take it to a auto sparky and just let them deal with it?

Are both ends out or just one? Both could indicate switch or similar, if only one then wiring to or connection/ bulb connections - or 3 crook bulbs....

if no luck & not really sure what you are dong - probably best to see a sparky - probably only a 10 min fix

    Cheers

  4. im not too happy at the moment. i got a letter through this morning from bp fuels. they have a picture of me filling my car at bp in lower hutt. and they claim that i was incorectly charged. and that i owe them $64.40 wich is about 48l of 91 octane.

now for starters i run my car on 98 not 91. and i only ever put 20 bux in at a time. and i have the bank statement to show that.

now i am wondering what kind of records the station keeps? like how much of what fuel came out of a pump at a specific time?

and can they look back at the transactions and see that i paid for 20 bux of 98 octane? and can they tell by the cctv what fuel i used and how much i put in?

    cheers.

    oli

Bloody a..holes!! - what a cheek, I would certainly be wanting them to "prove it was me" & show them your evidence to combat theirs.

    Good luck!

  5. 100w and you will be blinding every other driver on the road, dipped or not.

Not entirley true, sure 100w are brighter but it is the glare that dazzles oncomers. If set correctly on a beamsetter - the 100's dont create any more glare than 55 (can measure this on beamsetter meter)

Agreed though OE headlights are fine when clean, (inside & outside) if they arent, no matter what size bulb -you fit wont fix light output.

Also agreed - DONT fit higher wattage bulbs, you may be able to improve on standard halogen however by fitting zenon ultras - still 55w but whiter brighter light output than standard

  6. does anyone have some information on installing a dvd player into a 1998 e39 540, i have the factory tv and as i scan through the channels there is a blank av channel so im guessing it shouldnt be too difficult. the amp and cd changer is on the left of the boot and im not sure where the tv tuner is as i dont know what it looks like.

    Cheers for any help

Havent done one but it can be.

    PM me for details

    Cheers

  7. Hi, I'm wondering how I can tell if my radio can be switched from Japanese frequency range to NZ freq.

Car is 1997 740i (4.4l), stereo is 4:3 TV with DVD GPS and CD stacker. Sorry, am not sure what other information is relevant - I am new and so is the car (for me, at least)!

Any help much appreciated, am hoping I don't have to get a different radio!

Edit: actually, it wouldn't bother me to get a new stereo if that would help with getting the Japanese GPS to operate in English with NZ maps! Am assuming only certain gear is compatible with my E38, but not sure which versions.

    Cheers!

    Hi, Welcome to forum.

Firstly, no your present radio cant be changed to NZ BUT a replacement tuner (in rear of car) can be a plug & play to work perfectly in NZ. You current one is Jap specific. World programable tuners came out in BMW's in 2001 onwards, before then they were market specific - ie Jap, USA, Europe/Australasa.

I have a tuner at present to suit your car for NZ reception & can help with nav conversion too - have seen through many conversions in these cars.

    PM me for details

    Cheers

  8. hi there people's i need to clear the air abit and find out any information on how to diagnose a problem i have with my alternator ?

what actions do i need to know if i have to replace the alternator?

i done one thing my uncle said to me was to take the negative terminal(black terminal) off the battery, if it ran like normal then i don't need to replace or if it died then that means that i have to replace.

would this be true what i said above ?

could anyone help me out or point me in the correct direction that would be much appreciated

DONT!!!! do that - if not already stuffed - you run a serious chance of doing exactly that.

If you have already done & it kept running then you are bloody lucky & there MAY not be anything wrong with the alt. Doesn't discount a possibility of a problem in it though.

Seriously, with your apparent lack of knowledge (no offense) in this area then your best bet is take it to an auto sparky - it's only a 2 min job to confirm the problem with tools/ knowledge

  9. Thanks Jochen - 1 last question:

If you have a 1999 E39 with 4:3 display and the MK1 setup, what do you have to do to have MK4 with a 16:9 display?

    Since Jochen hasn't yet seen:

My car is the same as yours but with NZ nav working - the first to be done.

Remove the Jap unit, reterminate required wiring to fit new plugs suiting the MK4, run one wire to reverse light for reverse signal. Fit Mk4, NZ map disc & play -easy.

16:9 monitor is a plug & play swap from 4:3 - I have one arriving very shortly for mine. You also, however need to replace the video (TV) module with a later dual version as your current unit is 4:3 only.

PM me if you want more details, I, like Jochen, have seen through lots of conversions in these cars around the country although him a few more than myself.

    Grant

Sorry just seen - UK import. Similar will apply though - MK 1/2 units have different wiring plugs to Mk3/4 units, probably has reverse signal already too. From memory - I think there is a an adapter lead available to plug between old & new version units.

  10. Here is a strange thing went up to the Paeroa street races on the weekend and another light came on that is the orange engine with the straight piece at the back of the engine. This went off on the return home now today the seat belt air bag one has also gone off.I really like this car as its a dream to drive and meets my requirements and more. Its just this bit with the warning lights. now they are off should I continue with the dealer or wait for them to come on again?

Codes should be stored in the realitive ECU's memories so take car to a dealer or any auto sparky/mechanics that have a scanner able to talk to the car -most sparkys should -if any good.

  11. Can be done OK but as David already said -easier to get a car with - unless you have a car out of the ordinary.

Also probably uneconomic unless you can do the changeover yourself - you need all window regulators/motors, switches, wiring (manual car not wired for).

Sunroof can be converted OK too - I have done one myself for a guy -about 2 -3 hrs work. Requires a replacement rack/motor/switch assy - the most involved part is changing the rack assys over.

I can supply parts for you to retrofit if you require but again - unless you can do yourself then probably uneconomic

  12. Cheers guys, just tripped over it on Ebay, had known of them but never seen one available. Just had to have:-

Haven't seen a mirror mount version for sale but no doubt this is a hell of lot cheaper - cost about $145 NZ all up inc wiring plug/harness since my car not wired for it. Tee'd up the wiring required at the centre dome light & drivers vanity light so an easy install.

Yuen: No reason the rear view mirror version couldn't be fitted although it would complicate as the Jap IR remote receiver is also on the mirror on mine.

You give me the M5 & i'll fit one to it ;)

You dont see the Jappers coming out with practical ideas like this & it's about 10yr old technology for BMW

Anyone can fit this as long as your remote works on the same/similar frequency - no idea how many out there do

    Cheers

  13. Finally got around to fitting this today after having had for about a month.

Genuine BMW universal garage door opener UGDO.

Got it from the states - the guy reaconed all E38, 39, 46's were prewired for these units.

I confirmed mine wasn't but looked on WDS & confirmed a simple 3 wire hook up (12v, earth & illumination) so purchased anyway.

I suspect that because this unit uses RF output & my car is Jap origin using IR that these are not specced for Japan destined cars. Stand corrected on that though.

Found out from Jochen, once I had received it that the US uses 315Mhz whereas we generally use 433Mhz so maybe a compatibility issue -BUGGER! He had apparently already been there & got caught out with it.

Checked my garage remote on our frequency meter at work -318Mhz - yay in luck. Programmed it & confirmed it worked on the bench BEFORE I cut the hole.

Bit of a gimmick but cool all the same
