  1. I have 2 aerials, ones got a huge roll of cable thats just sitting underneath it not connected to anything, looks like cb antenna from a taxi, my car was possible a taxi at one point in its life im guessing....

I was wanting to just remove them, bog the holes up and not have an aerial...

What would happen If i connected the aerial to the heater grid on the back window? Im guessing turning the grid on it would blow my headunit?

Can't use the heater element for radio aerial. The aerial grid (although looking similar) is a separate circuit on the glass to the heater circuit

  2. Howdy.

Well, I got the part and replaced the door handle. Was a pretty simple job actually. Lots of stuff to undo unlike the previous E34 I had. Couple of questions/problems.....

    1. I removed the airbag which was pretty simple, put it back in, plugged it in etc......however now the airebag light shows constantly on the dash. Is there something that needs to be reset or have I f**k'd something up??

    2. When I was putting it all back together I noticed a plug I didnt undo....its connected to the tweater in the door. The lower speaker attaches to the door and has an empty plug/socket that I thought it might fit, but the plug was slightly different. Is this tweater simply a optional upgrade?? but is in all models?? I dunno. But assume all four in the doors are the same. Any ideas??

    Cheers

From memory the tweeter wiring plug connects to a crossover circuit board in the front of the door.

As Yuen said - yes you will need someone with a scanner to reset Airbag system. Agents or any decent sparky should have one

  3. You reckon its the real mcoy and been to Hamann Motorsports?

I wouldnt touch a singapore import with a 10ft barge pole! NZ New all the way :)

I certainly wouldn't have an Ex Singapore that age but reacon a young car (2-3 yrs) to be ok -before the gremlins have set in

Tis a nice car though but still prefer the E30 M3 over 36 - more character I reacon

  4. Hi Steve & welcome - yep you have the locking sorted - just hold your tongue right <_< .

Being 99 (as is ours) your radio has the earlier radio tuner in it -pre 09/01, whereby it is Jap specific & cannot be reprogrammed to suit here. Only optios are:

    Band expander - CRAP

Replace the radio tuner - GREAT - I have one to suit your car

Nav - Can also sort this for you - Brilliant system as others with will agree

Best to PM me for details

    Cheers

  5. Criminally negligent is a bit harsh I think (semmantics maybe?), and the OEM BMW pricing of parts may have something to do with the decision to take short cuts. But I do think it is unprofessional of an auto electrician to do that and wouldn't do that myself unless it was a temporary measure. If you buy a top end car, I guess you have to be prepared to accept higher maintenance bills.

Slightly off topic - a few years back I test drove a VR6 golf which locked brakes when I really hit them. The ABS light came on, and then went off again as normal after restarting the engine. To me, that is a fault as the ABS isn't doing its job even though the system is restarting normally and the light is going out implying that all is fine. Ended up walking away from that one, but shows that you can't be too careful when buying second hand.

As a sparky, I agree - although it can be done, it shouldnt.

As already said - some unsuspecting future buyer will have no idea of this & although, yes it could be identified when looked for - who would suspect to look for in the first place? No, it wouldn't throw a code either as the mat resistance is being replicated so there is nothing out of sinc as far as airbag diagnostics are concerned.

Agreed, price will often come into this equation as a reason to cheat it - maybe this issue should be looked at by the franchises/suppliers?

Also agreed - in this case there will likely be no problem in regards to airbag deployment, but this doesn't make it right.

  6. That radio on ebay is a NG (twin-display) radio with OG connections - one of the few available that were made during the transitional period whilst they changed to NG radios.

It is exactly the right type for a 2000 E46

Sorry guys - stand corrected on this - got caught out on the transitional one - CD53 is obviously the full NG version

  7. Great site.

As is shown - the old E12 has a pretty leisurely time of it - hardly run in.....

We bought (one owner) in 94 @ 85000km

Cost per Km to run is a bit scary looking at this :o
