  1. Yuen, don't forget: you are in Auckland, so you live and drive in a very strong signal coverage area. FM is broadcast from the Sky Tower, and from the Bombays to Orewa is generally a good strong signal.

But head out of town into the country, like in the Waikato, and then you really notice the difference between a proper NZ radio and a Jap radio with a band expander.

When the FM signal gets weaker, this is when you need the good receiver performance. And this is where band expanders really show how crap they are.

    Jochen

    For sure!!!! From Experience

  2. Windows - sounds like unloader relay is not triggering, look for an earth wire for the relay disconnected down at the starter - this opens the relay during crank & in turn cuts these circuits - also heater fan.

Fog lights sounds like a switch problem - at least - try this first.

Door locks -May have a broken wire in the door jamb/corrosion in plug, was the deadlock turned on by key in the door or did it come on itself?

  3. What quality Jaguar and Land rover were always badly designed and built

The only decent Land/ Range Rovers were the ones with BMW engineering and current jaguars are a hacked about ford platform with a ford motor.

TATA might be able to make something of them

Maybe, but Jag were arguably better under Ford than previous British Leyland etc during 70's & 80's.

Agreed BMW got the LR's, RR's up to speed & they have probably slid somewhat since - although I dont know to judge on this.

Cant say I share enthusiasim for Tata though

  4. Grant & Jochen: Why are band expanders bad? Do they decrease the reception quality somehow? By reasoning I can understand that having another link in the chain would decrease quality but interested to hear your explanations.

To put simply - they absorb the reception ability of the radio tuner & in turn reception quality deminishes. Jochen, with his background, could explain the technicalities of this.

From experience with these - have fitted probably hundreds at work over the years - reception is always deminished somewhat but varies from car to car & brand to brand of expander.

BMW, late model specifically, (through experience with mine) tend to suffer badly from this problem - again - not sure of specifics but I would think because of the aerial complexities in these vehicles - aerial amplifiers etc. Fitted with the correct tuner however (mine being 99 was pre "world tuner") - the reception is brilliant - before that & with an expander - it was crap.

  5. I think someone was filming it.

yeah got the car home ok, John Hudson gave me a tow behind his bmw 2002 race car, what a legend! we got some funny looks but it didn't even struggle.

Good on you, bet you got some looks OK, bloody long way to be towed!

  6. send me the video

    send me the video

    send me the video

that chassis alignment machine was awesome

Should patent that one I reacon.

Not sure who got video of it but would be a laugh to see it.

Ollie - you get car home OK?

  7. The overhead display is a warning display only - NOT an OBC (on board computer)

You say -no anologue clock - yours obviously digital - does it have - (from memory) about 9 buttons on it below the display? - if so it is an OBC & the beep could well be the ice warning as previously mentioned - this can happen when the sensor (around L/H front fog lamp area) fails.

  8. Depending on the noise - it may be the starter hanging in mesh somehow or a dry bush in the front starter bracket cause a buzzzzzz (as you describe) noise on windown. The first senario would be a much harsher noise.

    Getting closer now though.

Take a note from this though - if one bolt doesen't line up - there is a reason:-

  9. Brent

We have an injector cleaning machine at work

With it you can flush, check flow rates & compare, check spray pattern, check for leakdown. Then put in ultrasonic bath

Yes, they should be serviced, but usually aren't, normally replace seals, pintel caps & filter baskets at the same time

As Ollie said - around $25 -30 per injector (seals vary in price)

No need to replace unless they cant be bought back to spec

Well worth doing - most times an improvement will be noticed
