DIY: Re-colouring (Dying) Door Cards
greenday-rulz21 replied to greenday-rulz21's topic in Appearance
Having a look round atm. Considering most things. But all will come in time. Haha, yea. I didn't mean to offend! My dash is black so it would have looked really wrong.OK! Got the other side of the rear done last night and managed to fit in one of the fronts today. The other needs a really good clean. Again, very pleased. They certainly look the part. -
How the hell did you do that? I'd give Glenn a call in the morning. Those units aren't cheap if I remember correctly.

If the car is rated for 55w, 100w will melt the headlights.

Very sad. Looks asthough you put a lot of time and effort into that M3. Although congrats on selling it so fast.

DIY: Re-colouring (Dying) Door Cards

No, will not be selling my old ones atm. They look great Brent. Good to hear they can last for years. Cost about $16 a can. I bought one, but will need to go back for hopefully only one more. Appreciate the comments. Very pleased with the outcome. They look very sharp in real life. -
DIY: Re-colouring (Dying) Door Cards

I'll update the thread once I done and have pictures of all four cards. -
I just realized, why isn't there a specific DIY section of the forum? That would be a good idea IMO. Alright. So as most already know I purchased a white leather interior for my E36. Only problem is the door cards surrounds were the icky grey as the dash was on the donor car. I wanted them to match my dash which is the normal black. So I set out to find a suitable paint/dye for the job. I looked it up on google and the very few bits of information scattered around mentioned to just use normal car spray paint. I wasn't so keen on this however it could do the job. I dropped into Autopaint in Henderson with a sample door card to show them. The guys there were very helpful and knowledgeable. They couldn't provide me with the suitable paint however as they were out of stock (Weird for a dedicated paint shop). So I then headed down to Repco and checked out their range. I ended up with a VHT Vinyl Dye. Satin Black (Thanks to Tony (Westy)). I then set out to get the sh*t off the door cards and give them a good clean. The back of the can says to use grease and wax remover which I didn't use. I would recommend the use of this though as it will give the dye the best chance to stick properly. I did use a bucket with some clean water, a sponge and a very very light detergeant. You must not use a dirty sponge as you will just be putting all the dirt and grime you are wanting to take off back onto it. Luckily I had a brand new sponge sitting around. No pictures of the cleaning step, its pretty simple. When drying the cards after I would suggest letting them air dry. This allows them to dry completely without any other contaminants getting back onto the cards before you dye them. Then I masked the leather/vinyl inserts up. I didn't have specific painters tape or really anything special, just normal masking tape. Taped around the edges and filled the middle in with newspaper. Then the moment of truth. The dying stage. The can says to shake it for two minutes so shake it for two minutes. Then use even back and forth strokes to do a light even cover over the whole card. The can said to do 2 light coats 10 minutes apart then a medium coat afterwards. I followed the details on the can and I would suggest if you do this too, to follow them religiously. Every different type of spray paint/dye will have different adhesion needs so read the back! First coat. Second coat. Final coat. Can't see much difference in the photos between coast but each time it gets a slightly deeper and darker colour and better coverage. In real life the black isn't as intense but it still is very black. Thirty minutes later and the last coat of dye had just gone on. They look absolutely stunning. Nothing I would do differently in the future. They came out mint. Now to see if they can stand up to the test of time. Thanks for reading and if I can help in any way please feel free to PM me. Cheers, Nick

Didn't have the tools to swap the seatbelts receivers over. Got them this morning.

I ended up getting a very good Satin Black Vinyl Dye from Repco. Went out to an automotive paint shop in henderson but they were out of vinyl paint which they recommended. That will be the project for today I think. Getting the door cards dyed black. I don't know, I like the black because it contrasts very well with the white leather. I don't know whether you can get the seat beats out of the fold down rear seats anyway. But they'll be staying atm.Taking the fronts out took two seconds and it makes it sooooo much easier to work inside the car. Cheers everyone. Brook, not too bad. haha

Cheers Tony. But won't satin be a bit to shiny for an interior panel? Haha! Will let you know when its all sorted.
-
Cheers guys. It's always nice to hear that you've done the right thing haha. Door cards will also be going in right after I paint them. What would you suggest to paint around the insert? Just a normal matt or satin black?

And how do you do that Mark? -
There was a set of e36 coupe red leather sports seats on trade me a week or two ago down in Welly. I can't find the link in my history and I really need to contact the owner. If you by any chance still have it in the 'lost items' section or can find the link please help a brother out! Appreciate it. Cheers

Well got the back seats in on Saturday. Thanks so much to Nick (.36) for the use of your workshop, makes it soo much easier. IMO it looks fantastic. Seriously happy. Heres a couple pictures. Front seats will be going in later this week hopefully. I'm keen to hear what you guys think, I don't really care! I like them! SOOO PIMP!

Assuming you're talking about your e36. I did mine. Look absolutely mint. Not that hard, have to be removed from the car.
-
Looking forward to seeing it on your car. You going to do the Alpina decals? IMO that finishes off the look.
-
Pretty intense front lip if I do say so myself. I do like it. But remember it is a bloody low front lip and being fibreglass it will be exxxxtremely easy to crack.
-
Both, entrance 4 (If i'm thinking of the right one) is worse by quite a bit tho. +1I have to have to sunroof open. Even if its raining I just crack it slightly so its on a lean.

I've been saving up haha. Have seen this mint 328i twice. Absolutely love what he's done to the spoiler. Think I have a feeling who it might be. Brand new E92 M3 in Mission Bay. Wow. A pretty cool e36 in Greenlane. Looked bloody low in person. And the thing that pwns all the others (No offensive owners).

I think you're completely in tune with me Martyn haha. Thats exactly what I think. Suits most dark coloured cars perfectly but lighter? idk. But I think thats mainly because I haven't seen light leather in a lightish coloured car before. Ollie, luckily I don't wear blue jean, I wear black/dark ones. Sooo much better Dylan, Black will probably still be on the cards. I'll settle for white atm, see what it looks like (It will look good!) and if a black set comes up I might jump on that. The reason I'm getting a bit impatient now is that I have literally had 3 sets of black leather sports seats fall through in the last 14 months for various reasons. There must be something or someone out there who doesn't want me to have them. Ahhh Will be picking them up Saturday morning if all goes well (ie, they're in good condition).
-
Tony, Until you find and fix the problem just lock the car with the key. Thats what I had to do for a week or so when my remote wasn't working properly (If i touched unlock or lock for a millisecond too long it would set the alarm off).

haha its bs isn't it!Anybody want some CrAzY moonjumper boots lol?
