not sure if hes on here but saw "88 m3" on sunday. was on a car cruze and he went the other way, he then followed me all the way to the end of the cruze. was amazing that i saw the car on my first propper day out with my e30 with the m52 in it. also if hes on here can someone tell him to make a topic of the e30 hes building with a mate at the moment with an m5 motor in it. love to see some pictures of both his car and the m5 powered one

ok so found out why the fan setup hasnt been working, also found out why my windows, interior fan and some of the stuff on the dash stopped working, asked dad to have a looksy at the wiring (hes an ex aircraft electrician so thats his side of things to work on) and he found someone had swapped the fuse location for the fan and there wasnt one where it needed it, so we swapped that back to standard. he also found out there was a faulty grounding, so he made another one up and that fixed all the interior things aswell as my tacho which i thought was another e30 cluster failing. going to test out my fan tomorrow night as we ran out of time tonight, so still running on my manual switch for now. want to make sure the sensors are working as they are ment to before i go and blow a head gasket because one isnt working.

yea photos would be good thanks thanks for the tip on the shimming, ill have to get under the car at somepoint and check out what obsticles there will be. want to get my fan sorted first as i find i sometimes forget to switch it on, and not having a temp guage is hard to deal with and andrew, ive got a whiteline front one, and factory rear. and im so proud of it now, i converted a skyline owner to wanting one now, he had a rb25det and now wants me to build him up a beamer

ive already got mine in and spaced, but ive put all the spacers at the bottom as i thought i read i was ment to, but now the sump hits the rack. you wouldnt know how much spacing you have either side of yours do you? just so i only need to make one more set of them and not a couple of trial and error ones with the vanos the way it is now i thought it would be in the state best suited for low rev power and torque and it cant change from that, if i got the m50 cams then they would be a set made to be used through out the whole rev range, i can slightly feal it loose its power at high revs so it would be nice to get rid of that. im not sure what would be easier with the rear sway bar, i could use the hoist and tools at work to remove the diff easily(i would only drop it down enough to get the bar through anyway), or wheels off and possibly the suspension on one side. and with the front bar, i only got them today and the engine was in around 2 weeks ago. ill figure something out. its the big 24mm one so its gonna be fun fitting it, but then i hope ill be able to turn corners like i used to, i can really feal the extra weight at the front of the car

wow this thread just got messy, any chance it can be cleaned up a little by someone with the power to do so. and with the vanos controlled by a switch idea i was only asking about that as it isnt used at all on my engine and i wanted to make use of it. but now that i know the vanos system is as noisey as it is, can anyone link me to a decent write up on how to remove vanos and fit m50 cams, i think thats what people use, correct me if im wrong. i do want some lumpy race cams but atm i cant afford to do so only being an apprentice so stock m50 ones will do me fine (also i belive thats what the computer im using was origonally tuned for) now couple of other points, anyone done an e36 rack conversion and an M/S5x conversion. how did you have the spacers on the rack? mine are all below at the moment but it looks like the rack it hitting the sump. and how do you install a rear sway bar? do i really have to remove my diff (which i installed less than a week ago) or are you able to fit it up there some other way? its only a factory 325i one so didnt think it would be to hard. installed a z3 short shifter, feals so great when changing gears! has anyone used a factory electric fan (e34 one in my case as its bigger) wired up through the thermostat in the radiator? think my thermostat may have failed as it isnt turning it on and got a whiteline front swaybar to fit at some stage soon, any tricks to fitting that. yet again thanks ray at hellbm, awesome person to deal with
-
why ford falcon connections? just curious and what do you mean by the temperature? ive got the factory electric fan being turned on and off by a switch inside the car as a temporary thing untill i get the propper thermostat controlled setup working. ive got the m40 radiator (that doesnt leak!!! first one ive ever seen that doesnt) and the little temperature sender is still unconnected, need to find one of those adapters to put itin one of the pipes or hook it up to the factory system somehow. the car is defintly a work in progress and among other things the noisy vanos unit will be attended to asap, its anoying the crap out of me and doesnt sound good at all. also something weird that has only started happening since the conversion, my windows and heater fan (and most likly other stuff aswell) work when they want to, but windows always work when the doors are opened so it may be yet another wiring issue EDIT and i totally agree with the addictive part, its amazing to drive cant wait till i get my suspension setup and brakes then cert it so im not scared of being pink stickered for it.

ok havnt posted for a while, i ended up taking the manifolds down to pitstop on wairau road, he cut a peice out and put in a new peice with the right bends. didnt charge much for it, i put that all in, got an adapter made for the power steering pipes and made a home-made power steer resiour relocation setup. took it for a wheel alignment and then the issues started. alternator wasnt charging enough so it would keep the engine running but thats about it, not evan enough juice to wipe the windows. spent a while diagnosing it and eventually went to ray at hellbm (4 in the afternoon on a saturday and he supplied me with it, such an awesome guy!!!!) installed it started it up and had 14v at the battery also rewired the adapter for the harness as some of the pins wernt in the right place and the car was doing funny things. took it for a test drive and its amazing. think im going to get pinged when getting a cert for the exhaust being to loud but it sound so nice. all in all i love it and want more, now time for a drive...
-
ok figured it all out and car now runs thanks to ray at hellbm supplied me a new alternator at 4 in the afternoon on a saturday. got it all sorted now i got 14v when the engines running. and that^ was because i was typing the opposite things to what i was thinking, edited it all up quick tho

just checked the the large wire at the back of the alternator and its fine. checked the exciting wire with ingnition off and had 12v, battery light is constantly on evan with keys out so may have a issue with the alternator EDIT im an idiot...
-
batterys fine, getting 12v at the exciting wire and just about to check the big meaty one to the alternator, should be fine because the the engine starts easily and the alternator wire goes right though the starter point. batterys sitting at 12.1v atm(still charging it as it ran completly dead on my test drive), voltage then jumps to 12.7v with engine running, not much of a jump but enough to run just the motor
-
ok ive just put an m52 into my e30, but the alternator isnt charging enough. it does charge a bit but only a little about the normal battery output. i want to take this on a big drive but if i ever turn my engine off i need a jump start from another car to start it again, roll starts evan dont work. it charges enough to keep the engine running but not enough to evan power the indicators, radio (evan cleared the memory), head lights, wipers, horn or dash lights. (and yea i did find these all on my test drive last night, when it was dark ) ive seen other people on the internet that have had similar issues but i cant find a solid anwser.

rx7 calipers and vw rotors on an e30?
slowe30 replied to slowe30's topic in Brakes, Suspension & Steering
ive got a set now and will install them once i get decent suspension. the look so much bigger and the entire e30 pad fits into just the pad surface of the rx7 pad. i got the adapter from america as i dont have access to the machinery required to get to a certification standard. also found out my m52 is approximatly the same weight at a m20 so the upgrade isnt hugely required but ive got them now... -
so jelous, good work mate. my 24v conversions stuck needing either an adapter made for the powersteering pump or lifting the engine taking the rack out and getting a new fitting put on the end of the line.
-
very nice, very jelous. could only be better if it was in an E30

got the engine in the hole, few more things to be done before i can start it up, but ive hit one major problem. the manifolds have been modifyed to fit the engine into an e30 so they a slight bend to get around the steering rack, because i have swapped to an e36 steering rack my manifold now hits and i cant turn the wheels AT ALL so now i have to get someone to move the bend in the manifold along about 10cm, with out disturbing anything else in the system. any one know a GOOD exhaust shop on the north shore. thankfully that was the only problem worth mentioning

its just to get me to a wheel alignment place, as i dont want to destroy my decent tyres. also a good pair of skid rims if i ever need them

ill do this eventually but to start with i need the basics done and it all certed so i can use it. now update time, got my steering rack in finally, bit of trial and error on the powersteer pipes but eventually got them to fit in. got the steering connector with the universals in, i used the e30 top half, e36 bottom half, e36 rubber centre with e30 metal spacers, and e36 sheild and a washer on each of the bolts to space it the slightest bit, just a bit of peice of mind. also i cleaned the rack up and i got to say im quite proud of the job i did, ill put up a picture later on, but it looks like a new part, i couldnt get any of the other parts to come out this clean so im quite proud of it. tomorrow night ill be putting my custom 15 inch steelies (swift rims with center bore enlarged with a grinder, BFH and then a drill) and lowering it down and finally starting on the engine install. im hoping engine will be in place by the end of the weekend. long time frame but i know ill hit a few niggly issues that will take time to sort out and i dont want to be rushing anything, do it once do it right. then if its in by the end of the weekend i should be able to start it up and possibly drive it next weekend

im thinking a video may be in order no thrashing, just a nice little cruze video like no one else does would be nice

Anyone know what signal (12v or something along these lines) the vanos solenoid needs to activate? Im considering ideas of having a switch to turn it on or off. Then when ever i plan on going fast or i track it i could turn it on so it likes high revs alot more than it would with the current set up. Its currently set up with a non vanos loom and computer. Would this work or will the tune be all put all out of wack??
-
ok now we have conflicting ideas and this is were the internet gets difficult. that is unless the m40b16 had a different bolt pattern to the m40b18, or the m50 has different pattern to m52, if so ignore this. andy said you need a getrag 240 off an m40, silver fox has just said the m40 bolt pattern is different to m50. who is right??? this is one of the reasons i brought a bolt up setup off someone over buying all the parts myself.

because the 6 cylinder sits a cylinder back further, you need the shorter driveshaft. your current one will be to long. and not really an update but just letting you know whats happening. have bent the new high pressure power steering line low pressure one is just about completed. am taking the shocks and springs to work tomorrow so i can fit the spring onto the shocks because spring compessors dont compress the spring enough. once their done and back in ill be able to fit the new engine. any hints or tips on fitting it in the hole? then it should just be swap over my diffs and plug engine up, fit and bleed new brake set up and go test it all hopefully dont need to wait to long for the rx7 calipers, adaptors and rotors, if they arnt here by the time the engines in it will be put on hold for a week or 2. EDIT add to that list, need to sort out a linkage to connect my steering rack up. any ideas?
-
im guessing its an m40, if so yea, will bolt straight in and you can use 100% bmw parts. not sure if they are the same mounts as you already have, someone else will have to anwser that. also APT those springs i got off you, are they lowering springs or just performance springs? they dont want to fit my front shocks as i presume they have been shortened. will take them to work on friday and fit them with the propper spring fitting tool. spring compessors arnt good enough

thanks engines fine, never gave me any grief. it is for sale but i havent actually put anything up yet advertising it, been a little busy with the conversion. pm me if your interested

got the rack today, had a look at the power steering conections, not as simple as useing e36 piping, got to bend up the e30 pipes into place and i still need to get a hold of some spacers to fill in the extra gap on the mounts. installed the rear springs and im really hoping that they havent settled propperly as the car looks as if its at standard height, i evan bounced around on it. evan with the front jacked up so i could do the front springs, i still have no camber this is just giving me more reasons on convincing my dad that i should get a bc gold adjustable setup, as he is the only thing stopping me at the moment. itll just mean i have to wait a couple more weeks before i cert it all so i can save up the coin to get the shocks and get them all welded up. pictures will come tomorrow as i can find the camera cable

got a VTNZ warrent quite recently, had to get one to get a green sticker removed (bald tyres FTL) had to replace a broken engine mount to get that warrent aswell as it had broken, you caught me out thats a good idea with the rack conections. will just see what my dad can get off him, have to send him up there as im out of transport. and the gearbox im not sure about, done quite alot of driving in this car, and the odometre hasnt ticked over untill recently, the car i got it from was my old e30, similar thing happened there but the gearbox was in the car when i got it and was factory auto. so your guess is about as good as mine, any idea about the box you supplied?
