  1. Cheers Hybrid, very useful info. Well, went into the camera shop today. Found out prices are pretty much going to go up about 35% as of the 1st of march so have to get cracking! Think ive made my decision up. Looking at going for the Canon 40D over the 450D & D80. Probably a bit more advanced for a beginner but for $200 more its pretty much a no brainer. My next headache is now what is a good all round lens to get? Not keen on anything with a big ass zoom as I dont think its going to develop my skills. I can get a standard 18-55mm kit lens fairly cheap but it probably defeats the purpose of have a camera such as the 40D? Been reading many forums where people have said a fixed 50mm f1.4 or 1.8 seems to be good for a beginners to learn with and seems to come up with the goods. Appreciate everyones input. Its been very useful in making a decision. Please correct me if any of my thoughs are off or on par
  2. Cheers Camera Doctor! Youre clearly up with the play I see It sounds like youre pushing the 40D which is where im heading. Do you think I should buy it with the standard 18-55mm kit lens or should I just purchase the body and look for better lens? Remember im a noob so only really know the basics at present but am willing to put the time and effort in to learn. Is there anything in the Nikon range that would give the 40D a run for its money, remembering its $1500 for the body alone.
  3. Thanks. Im starting to think that the live view is a bit of a waste of time really. Not really something that should sway my decision. Its all about the end result really.
  4. Thanks aliluya, good to see what kind of photos the 40D can take. The first ones a hard case. Tell me.....how do "I" get hold of wholesale gear?
  5. Aliluya, Id be keen to see some pics you've taken with the 40D. I think im heading that way...
  6. mtech1 e30 is switched on! Take a leaf out of his book.
  7. I was going to say this but I thought I would get my head bitten off! Sell the car, its not necessary. Youll have time later on in life to get another one. Buy a $1000 corolla and hack around in that. Priorities is what its about!
  8. Man have things changed! Back in my day (12 years ago) I received $150 p/w living allowance as part of my student loan, which I had to pay back. This covered the majority of the hostel which was $180 p/w. The olds paid the $30 difference. The Xmas break between school and uni I worked my a$$ off to pay for day to day living expenses. I pretty much had $50 a week to my name. I didnt have no flashy car a cell phone with 2000+ txts a day or cool threads. I walked everywhere, drank bulls eye beer (about $4 a doz) and never ate out. Kids these days....shesh
  9. WOW! Thats some serious coin. Out of my league
  10. I think all the additionl features like more fps, bigger screen, live view etc are not a must at the early stages but I think in the future once I become more aware of these things ill wish I had them. Make sence? 450D body is $1299 40D body is $1499 I agree with the Sony comment I agree with you comment about the lenses. I think a basic kit lens will be enough to get me started. If and when im ready to invest more coin I think id look at getting a wide angle lens, something as low as a 16mm. Cheers
  11. Thanks for you thoughts and recommendations. The 450D does seems to be a hit with everyone on here. The thing is that I can get the 40D for only $200 more than the 450D. Is it worth it is the question? Thanks for your comments. The guy at the camera shop recommended the Sony A350. he said it was the best bang for buck DSLR. I totally agree with you comment about it being photographer that takes the great pics. Im interested to hear about the D60. Its at a very good price at the moment. I have also been considering this. I just dont want to buy it then a year down the track think "I wish I had of got the 450D or 40D" I want to future proof myself as much as possible really.
  12. Thanks Incary for you thoughts on the 450D. This is the kind of info im after. That photo you posted is massive! If I could do $hit half as good as that I would be wrapped. Was that done with a standard kit lens? Is is worth spending a few extra dollars for the 40D? From what ive read it has a bigger iso range, more fps, better build quality etc. Its 10mp comared to the 450D's 12mp. Oh the headache
  13. Welcome! Pics please. Two Gregs with E36 M3's and pretty much the same member name This is going to be confusing
  14. Well after doing a bit of research over the weekend ive come down to the following cameras Canon 40d, Canon 450d or the Nikon D80. All these options will be with a standard 18-55mm f3.5-5.6 IS Lens Your thoughts? Is there any others I should consider? Should I just buy the body and look for a better lens or is the standard kit one ok to get me going? Should I maybe look for something cheaper to start off with? Thanks for you help, much appreciated.
  15. Thanks Thanks Thanks Yeah, ask your friend if he still has it and is willing to sell. I might be interested...
  16. Thanks Ken. Thats a very very good site. Lots of unbias info for someone like myself. Interesting what he says about megapixels and also his thoughts on a camera such as the Nikon D40. I would have never considered something as low down the pecking order as that.
  17. Cheers for your input. No offence taken with the Sony comment. Im not a big fan so couldnt care less Yeah, still deciding if I actually need live view. These is quite a bit of price diference between having it and not. I suppose some purists wouldnt be fans of it. You seem quite keen on Canon. What dslr body would you recommend? Cheers Edit: Cabbage spelling
  18. Hi All, Im keen on photography and have decided to get a digital SLR. Just wondering if there is any budding photographers who can give me a bit of advice on what to look out for? Im wanting to buy a camera thats a little better than you standard entry level digital slr. I dont want to buy one that im going to be disapointed with in a year or two and want to upgrade. Something like a Nikon D80 would be ideal but im keen on something with live view so maybe the D90 is more me?? Sonys A350 seems to have to goods but in all honesty im not a fan of sony gear. I just feel like they want to rule the world in every aspect of electronics Thanks in advance for your advice. Brett
  19. ON . TO . IT! I have no idea how you do it but very impresive.
