  1. All these car companies should really stick to making cars.

As a keen cyclist for many years and ex competitive MTB racer I sometimes shudder when I see these things. They look cool but performance wise really are not up to par.

While it looks very cool, 12.9kg is not that light, the Manitou Mach front Fork is mid-range and the SLX groupset is Shimano's mid-range gearset.

For the price I imagine it will be sold at, you would expect top range gears on it and a heaps better front fork.

    better details here:

  2. The Falcon or the Commdore will never be stopped. Sales are far too strong in OZ for that. They will simply move to one of Ford or GM's global platforms.

My guess is Ford will move the Falcon to the new Mustang platform (still RWD) and that will also allow them to sell it in the US under another name. Probably the same with GM.

  3. AVESCO have scheduled a press meeting for the Monday after the Australian GP to release the "car of the future" details. I am neither a Ford or Holden fan but you have to appreciate the quality and calibre of the racing this year, which has been excellent. Th safety car has only been out twice in 6 races (almost 1500km of racing). Once for a crash and once because the track started to break up.

Bring on Hamilton I say!! Free tickets fro me once again :D

  4. Hey I'm sure they are 40 or 41 the guy had them on his lowered e46 and said when he had large rubber, (265-255 off the top of my head) he would occasionally get outside rub at speed and bumps. so i assumed  that they would be ok for my e36.

Please tell me i havn't screwed up lol!!

you should be fine as it is only the M3 version of the E46 that is peculiar in it's offsets. The offset should be stamped in the back as well.

  5. The E46 takes this further by having different offsets front and rear, on the rear to be able to run 255's by moving the wheel in, they use less on the front to maintain track width.

Correct on the offsets being different but the E46 M3 runs a low offset at the rear which moves the wheel further out and a higher offset at the front which moves the wheel in. I think you may have your offsets confused, (possibly with backspace). The E46 M3 is peculiar in the BMW family in that it runs a 5 series offset at the rear and 3 series offset at the front. :)

BOT: Cliff, what offset are the 18x9's you have just bought?

  6. Done, and have made all the guys here at work sign it as well. I always make sure I attend the internatinal meetings and it makes me really really annoyed that these residents move in even though they are aware of the speedway.

What will be next? Muzzling the animals at the zoo so they are quiet between 10pm and 6am?

Everyone should get behind this... maybe a BS meeeting later in the year?

  7. I am not trying to start an argument either :) .

It is actually refreshing to have a decent conversation on here about a serious issue without insults flying and smart ass comments ruining it. As I said in a previous post I don't doubt your knowledge, I was just trying to let you know what the latest updates were.

Froma professional point of view I agree with the new amendments, it makes a lot of sense, especially given the huge and varied range of tyres available in NZ. These new regs have primarily come about because of the whole snow tyre issue.

The speed rating must be the same on the same axle. It makes sense because if you had say a 'T' on one and a 'W' on another that is a huge difference not only in terms of speed but also in terms of tyre construction.

Anyway we probably should keep it on topic like you said. Glad to hear the 245's fited your rims!

  8. All well and good and I don't doubt your knowledge. However as an "ex tyre guru" you may not be aware of the new WOF regs. :)

You can argue all you want but the WOF laws were updated recently and they state that tyres on a matching axle MUST be of the same tread pattern type ( ie both directional or both asymmetric) and the load index of the tyre MUST be within 2 of each other. IE you can have a 91 and a 93 but not a 91 and a 94. Also the speed rating MUST be the same.

If your WOF inspector is not aware of these laws he can potentially have his licence revoked. In short he should not have given you a warrant, and at the moment your car is technically "not up to WOF level". He or she should go back and read the latest updates.

The Police are also having a major crackdown on this (along with snow tyres) and believe me they WILL give you a green sticker.

Anyway good luck and I hope you don't come across a random police stop.

  9. In response to 3 pedals, strangely I thought the Pirelli I have on the drivers side was bloody massive compared to the Direzza on the other, it looked more like a 265/40, not that I measured it or anything.

Are they not two different pairs front and back?

Not according to his post. :)

  10. Hopefully I am wrong but by looking at your pictures I am guessing you bought the tyres 2nd hand? If you have, do you have realise you have an asymmetric on one side and a directional on the other? This is not good for handling and you will fail a WOF for having different tyre constructions on the same axle. The speed rating and load index may also be different which is a failable WOF item as well. :)

  11. I was not suggesting yours, but two sets of non branded BMW replica wheels I have had caused bad shimmy at certain speeds, even with good tires.

Taking them off for stock OEM wheels reduced the vibration significantly.

I know you weren't suggesting ours but a generic statement like the one you made is not exactly true. :)

Did you happen to upsize the wheels as well? We have found this a number of times especially when going from the factory 15's or 16's to an 18" or bigger wheel. It has always been that the suspension bushes have been rather tired and the heavier weight of the bigger wheel exaggerated the problem.

  12. I wouldn't touch replicas.

Go for it if you like motorway vibrations and shimmys.

    :)

You can't beat a true OEM or proper branded quality alloy. So much smoother and you known your treating your car well, not putting fake stuff on it.

There is always one  .

Maybe in your experience, but I can probably say the shimmy was due to the suspension rather than the wheel. We have sold 100's of sets of replicas and the quality has always been excellent. We never have any trouble with any of our wheels. Generally it is the cheapest tyres that cause problems. :)

  13. You are right Ethan

23mm more to the outside and 1mm more to the inside for the fronts

23mm more to the outside and 15mm more to the inside on the rears

Remember that these measurements are from the inside of one bead to the inside of the other bead on the wheel. So in reality you probably need to add another 15 - 20mm total to get a measurement that is close to the outside of the wheel.

  14. Yea I got the car from Euro Prestige in Grey Lynn.

Thanks everyone and sorry for the delay here are some more pics as promised.

I thought I recognised the car. We put the wheels on it. Do you mind if I steal a pic for our website? I will blank the number plate out.

  15. What would happen if I put a 40 profile tyre on? Apart from speedo going out.

not much on an E28. However if you go for a 50 series sidewall with a skinnier tyre you will get more stretch as the sidewall height is higher. I think you wil struggle to get a 215/40/17 on a 9.5" wide rim. We do have a bead blaster at work which helps with inflation if you need.

No ones makes a 225/40/17 and a 235 will not give you much stretch.

The Jetta we did had 185/55's on 8" wide rims.
