Same sorta thing happened in my area a while ago, although not to me, there were a couple people cruising round at any given hour no matter how busy and they would just lob a huge rock through a windscreen or window. Gutted about yours though!!!!

I've just finished swapping my 87 320i to a facelift (motronic 1.3) 327i, the c101 plugs are both the same, they both use the round plug sitting on the firewall, there is no other wiring that needs changing except to connect the rev counter as it isnt directly connected to the L-JET MCU plug. The c101 plugs are all set up the same and will plug and play unless someone has played with them. Unless your 87 e30 uses the square plug on the firewall, then its different, but my 87 e30 didnt? As far as I know facelift 320i's were equipped with motronic 1.3? Which means its the same setup as what I've just swapped. I did forget about the exhaust downpipe ( I welded the 4 stud downpipe onto my exhaust ) and the radiator (which also needs the mounts from the 90 car), but if one picks up the entire set there is no problem, if you just use what you get from the 90 motor nothing needs changing. My motronic motor does not use an oxygen sensor. EDIT: There are other things to do also, but they are minor, IE coil is mounted on the right as opposed to the left, the expansion task in on the left as opposed to right, and if you have cruise control in your 87 e30 mounted in the bottom left you will need to move it and attach it to the expansion tank (it has mounting holes)

It is almost a straight swap, the pre-facelift and face-lifts use different engine management systems, your 87 uses jetronic, and the 90 uses motronic. You need to make sure that when you pick up the new motor you need to pick up the complete loom with it. Its as simple as removing the old motor complete with the old loom, and installing the new motor with its own loom attached, push the new plug through the firewall, plug in the ecu and your away. There is one small thing you need to modify with the rev counter but its not a big job. Old motor out, New motor in, Drive.

Which incidentally was a train on tires, turning corners I hear was a luxury.

Definately talk to Gus, he mentioned that its a fairly straight forward swap! Shouldn't be too difficult!

As I said when I vomited over it yesterday, it looks great. Truly a good buy, love the wheels! Love the car!
-
Lookin sharp Ray You must have a deal setup with them, they get the bodies, you get the bimmers,
-
LOL!!! Lowner I bet you had a few people hang their heads before they scrolled down hahahaha. Congrats on the buy! I love the black bottles keep them!! How much did you get for the 5er?
-
LOL dont forget to wipe up the drool I left behind
-
Wasnt Gus' car kitted, lowerd, had weaves, alot more specs and looked diff?

Looks even better in person David, I was wondering if I could wheel it out while you werent looking

Can only really suggest one thing, but don't worry about the oil in the manifold too much unless it starts pouring out, there is an oil breather attached to the intake which often lets in oil, Being 87, means pre facelift, pre facelift means old wax filled Idle control valve, this means almost 99% of the time this will be your problem, if it is very rough and stallish when cold, it is stuck closed, if it is great when cold and idles very high when warm, it is stuck open, (I think thats the right way around) Anyway, to test it, remove it, (It was two coolant lines connecting to it, and two vacuum lines) boil some water and stick it in and see what it does.

check your gearbox out if you have been driving away in 2nd for so long
-
Call Ray @ HellBM I can almost garuntee he will have everything that you need, the best gearbox to put behind a m20b25 is a Getrag 260 as it is stronger than the 240, but the if you have a 240 that will fit and work also. Definately upgrade to a 5 speed either 240 or 260.

How much did the e46 rings set you back and what did you buy specfically? Is it a package from bmw? Or..?

A b25 block will run best with a b25 head, they use domed and dished pistons and the head is designed specifically for these, what was refferd to above is the b27 block, (which is the bottom end of a 525e which actually has an increased stroke) You can use alternator, and power steering pump from your 323 but the rest will need to come from the b25, as the distributor is on the end of the cam and things are different from the 323. If you get a 2.5, make sure it is a facelift 2.5, which means the computer is motronic 1.3 and is way superior to the old motronic and the L-jetronic system the 323 and 320's use, so definately use the 325 ECU. If you can, just get a complete motor, with loom and ECU attached and in one piece and install that, its just a matter of pulling out the old wiring and replacing it with the new. Megasquirt is an aftermaket engine management system, you can order it in two forms, ready made (pay extra) or un-wired and in pieces, which gives you the challenge to wire it up yourself. You can then ditch the restrictive e30 AFM which will give you more power, and with megasquirt running the sky is the limit to what mods you want to do, as you can constantly change the ECU to adjust to what you have done. Edit: Typos and info.

I have done this... secret shame. (not on my bmw though) :S
-
Nice Are you bringing us one back?
-
The 320i head and 323i are the same, the 325 head has bigger valves and bigger ports, yes it CAN fit on the b20 but its not worth it, the chamber size will be incorrect for your b20 and compression will drop, so pretty much leaving you with the same power as you started with. Do an m20b25 swap, not difficult, cheapest gains that money can buy (IMO) Its a great motor, plents of power and torque and a fantastic base if you want to go nutty with mods.

I work with one of the brothers from Adeaze (spelling?) Thats about it really, he's met everybody though.

Fair enough Just a thought!

Things to include in rebuild : Turbo Refer to persons above previous post

Clutch slave cylinder? My tools are a cut in half bottle with clutch/brake fluid sitting in it (in case anything gets sucked back in), a rubber hose that fits over the bleed nipple, a ring spanner, and a second person to listen to my "in" and "out" calls, works a treat everytime.

Its a good thing m20s are plentiful!
