Nice car mate, welcome to BS. 318is are awesome and so are the old school 6 series. If you are looking to change the oil yourself, I had no chance in getting the oil filter from Repco in Wairau but managed to find them at SuperCheap but purely based on their stock. I got FRAM filters which seems to be quite well and used Castrol GTX Protec 15-40 since the engine has done 80,000Km. You do need a long wrench to get a good good fulcrum.

When I started with the modification of my car, I was a little lost as to what solution I wanted, I found a set of H&R lowering kit from fellow a BS member. It gave me a decent drop on the front with 60mm and still kept the steering issues out of trouble. The rears however, with the 40mm looked just as same as before, I went on and Pboy offered me his 60mm B&G rears. Still not quite as happy with the 60mm drop, a few days ago, Nino offered me his custom 80mm rear springs which was just what I was looking for. With the 80mm in, now the car really looks low and the car is finally flat level, where as before the car had a slight front lean. If you serious about lowering your ride, dont bother with off the shelf products, not that they are bad but they are really limited. If you only want to lower your car a little, maybe off the shelf products will suit you best and saves you the hassle. A ruler will help you very much in getting to your desired height...

Have you been to Snells yet? How much are you compressing my standard springs? haha.
-
Compressed springs captivity will depend how much you compress them. I have 80mms, Nino's old springs and they are still captive, well, kind of... You can compress them to whatever you want, I have compressed 80mms on my rear and H&R 60mm on the fronts. PBOY should be able to answer your questions in deeper detail.

40mm should be a decent height to get people the SLAB bug... -
You really need to see his car to really appreciate the amount of time spent on making sure his car is of the best height, overall he has done a great job, especially in keeping the car looking clean, not letting it off loose turning into ghetto like Nino

Hi guys, got a bit of an issue here, just lowered the car slightly today, and is now experiencing scraping on my driveway, this happened before but now its even worse. What the car seems to be scraping on is two beams that run along the front of the car. I have no idea what they are, tried google without any answers, PBOY's 320i Couple doesnt have them but my 1997 318i Sedan does. The car was manufactured in 1996 according to the chassis number. What I am asking for those who know what those beams are, is it ok to give it a little scrape here and there or is it the end of the world for me? I know the car wasnt designed to be on its belly so I dont want it to be like that way...
