Look at the time !!! - Glenn, don't you sleep mate ???

Shelley (M325iS) - sorry, I did leave that one a bit open. The profit on the widget is still $100 (the markup) as it's sale price is still $200. we are just changing the rate of GST. The consumer now pays GST of $30 rather than $25. Glenn simply collects and passes it on. He's already claimed the GST on the purchase as you correctly point out. Where the seller maintains his price as Johnno is, the loser here unfortunately, is Johnno. He is subsidising the rate increase through a lower profit margin - again, go back to NET OF GST. He realises he has to sell more units to maintain the same level of profit so support your local BS sponsor !!! Gutsy, Johnno. Glenn - no need to put up your charge rates unless your GST exclusive costs go up, so keep an eye on what your suppliers are doing to you. Compare the GST exclusive cost of any stock you buy after Oct with what is was in Sept. You may find that some suppliers will add a bit and hope the customer doesn't notice. Chris W (wom) - no not me mate, unless you work for Marsh who currently administer our staff group plan with Sov. So, for those of you with businesses: - make sure you are prepared with your advertising ready to go e.g. prices on websites updated, newspapers, sign boards, menus, shelf price tickets etc. - check with your software suppliers for updated software. Most are providing updates that will globally change GST rates on GL (general ledger) codes rather than you having to go into each item and change the rate manually. - those providing quotes prior to 30 Sept should also ensure that the GST rate change is noted e.g. quote the GST Exclusive price and add the words "plus GST".

OK, I've been following this one and have just sat watching to see where everyone is coming from. I'm an accountant (director in a CA firm) and GST/tax etc is part of what we do every day. Hopefully this will help. There are two issues that you are talking about here - 1) profit and 2) who is wearing the 2.5% increase in GST. When a business is registered for GST you should always work in net of GST terms i.e. work out the GST Exclusive price. That is the real cost. For example: Glenn buys a widget for $112.50 before 30 Sept so the net cost is $100.00. He gets to claim $12.50 as a purchase (Input) on his GST return. He then sells it before 30 Sept for a 100% markup. That makes the sale price $200.00 plus GST ie $225.00 under the 12.5% rate. He puts the $25.00 as a sale (Output) in his GST return. His profit is $100.00. He pays $12.50 to the IRD in his GST return ($25.00 minus $12.50). That difference of $12.50 is actually what his customer paid him so he is merely passing that on to the IRD. OK, that's what happens now. If he sold the widget after 1 Oct then it would be sold for $100.00 (what it cost) + $100.00 (his markup) plus GST of $30.00 (at 15%) i.e the sale price is $230.00. The customer pays the additional GST, not Glenn. Glenn's real job is that of a tax collector as he simply passes the net GST content (the $30.00) onto Uncle John and Uncle Bill who will then pass it back (plus a bit more) as tax cuts. The rise in GST is born by the end user i.e the man or woman in the street as generally they cannot claim GST. If they did, then they would most probably pass it on to their customers and pay the GST on their sale on to the IRD. @ Greg S - if you add the 15% onto your GST exclusive price then you are not out of pocket. Your customer has paid you the extra 2.5% @ Glenn - you are not making a 2.5% profit as you are paying that to the IRD. Your profit on the widget is $100.00 whatever the GST rate is unless you put your markup up (increase profit) or don't change your final price (reduce profit - see below). I fear that many businesses will double dip (increase price by markup and GST) to compensate in some way for the bad 24 months we have all been through. The loser here is the end consumer. @ Glenn and Shelley - if you keep your RRP the same after 1 Oct i.e. $225.00 then the nett sale price is $195.65. You have only made a profit of $95.65 on that $100 widget you bought, whereas before 1 Oct you made a profit of $100.00. In this instance you have subsidised the customer and worn the 2.5% increase yourself as it has cost the customer no more. Herein lies your dilemma - do you keep your RRP the same to the customer or do you put the price up? It's difficult on price sensitive items. By keeping your prices the same you are doing yourself a dis-service. You will suffer as your profit will reduce. Your larger suppliers (Product, Phone, Power, Rent & rates, Petrol) will not be keeping their prices the same. If most of your customers are other GST registered businesses then putting the price up will not be a problem as they can claim the GST back. If you are a retailer (e.g. the local butcher) selling to the general public then you may see some customer dissatisfaction at the counter. In time they will get used to it. Most, if not all, customers are expecting prices to rise. Hope this has helped in some way.

Hi Clinton I do mostly all town driving (Christchurch metro, home / peak hr school drop-off / client visit / home, no motorway stuff) and my OBC is shows consistently between 17 and 18 mpg (yes I'm old school). No thrashing - I'm too old for that now. A return trip to say Dunedin and I can get 28 mpg. My OBC has 2 consumption recorders. I reset CONS 2 every fill so I can see my weekly usage. CONS 1 was from reset about 12 months ago and is 16.8 mpg Andrew (HT) would have better consumption as he come in from Rollie.

The silver Highline is virtually identical in spec. to mine. TV is fully usable, even teletext. Jochen here assisted with setup. I haven't bothered with the nav system.Paul, the seats on the Highline models are the comfort seats. If they are sports seats they certainly don't offer much support. As Mark says, get a check done. Pay particular attention to the front suspension bushes etc (the most likely cause of the "shimmy"), coolant system, and on older models look for oil leaks etc. I've a small intermittent leak I can't track down. Invest in a warranty or get it thrown in. I've had mine for just on 4 years and absolutely love it. Unfortunately it's now only worth 1/3rd of what I paid. If I was looking for a 540i now I'd go for a later year Motorsport spec. They will be more attractive come time for sale. Have a good look around and don't have a rush of blood. In 1999 the NZ$190k 540i was rated as the best high performance saloon car in the world. You can enjoy that too for only 10% of the new price! Spend the savings at the pump.

at the lights Durham and Tuam St at 5.20pm, black E28 M535 Reg OY7776. Young chap in 20's at the wheel. Nice burble from the exhaust at idle Carjam shows its NZ new but re-plated and looks like its been off the road for a while Haven't seen it at any BS meets but anyone know this car? Could be a nice collectible for anyone if it comes on the market

Ditto for me - I can't fit them on the rear of my E39 either.Perhaps your supplier can make up some standard plate surrounds with the Bimmersport by-lines as well. Then I'd have one of each !

I'm feeling a lot better now that there's another 40+ member in BS Chch. Have a great day and ditto what Mark said.

I've fitted the Toyo Proxes C1S which were recommended by Jono at fitted by Courtney at the Chch store of Mag n Tyre Direct. Far less road noise than my previous German Fuldas and not as harsh a ride either. Very smooth ride and no tracking (the tread has quite big spacing in some places). Good price with BS discount - thanks Jono

It's late at night and I've left my E39 540 at work in the carpark. Scenario: Got dropped at work tonite to pick up some reports I'd left behind that I needed to read for tomorrow. Meantime my wife and son went to Macca's for an ice cream and came back to pick me up. I was running a little behind so they sat in the car watching the TV. Must have been only 10 mins. I came out, noticed the tail lights were on but thought nothing of it. Jumped in, turned the key. CLICK CLICK CLICK (fast rate), OBC was flashing, kid was crying, no motor turning over. Calm down, deep breathe. Turn off all aux stuff, lights, aircon. Turn key - CLICK CLICK CLICK (still at a fast rate) "F@#K !" "What was that Dad?" said the 6 year old ? "Nothing buddy..." Waited 5 mins while wife rang her sister to come into town to pick us up. Turned the key, OBC didn't light up. Not a good sign CLICK CLICK CLICK (till at a fast rate) "F@#K !" "I haven't done anything!" yells the wife "Are you angry Dad? What's Mum done?" whimpers the six year old "Nothing buddy...." trying to remain calm Home now, son's now asleep. Will call AA when I get to work to see if it is the battery. I'm hoping that's all it is. I've spent $5k+ this financial year on repairs and tyres already. My fellow directors are giving me sh$t about European cars and jokingly want to dock my salary for being over budget this year. Any other ideas ???? Glenn ? Ray ?? Brent ??? Jochen ???? Had the heater resistor hedgehog replaced 6 months ago (well known cause of current drain if faulty) - could it be this again? Heater is being a wee bit flakey but fan is not running after shut down. Will check back in morning before I get lift in to work.

How is an E39 540i like a rugby scrum at traffic lights?

I'm in the blood bin at the moment - fuel pump decided to pack a sad during the weekend.Stretchered off on a car transporter from home. How embarrasing in peak traffic first thing on Monday morning. Hopefully back in deck tomorrow afternoon. -
Support our forum sponsor Jono (zenetti) at Mag and Tyre Direct He arranged some Toyo Proxes C1S for me down in Chch. Great tyre and good price fitted and balanced

Enjoy the big OE Riley. Glad to have met you a couple of times at Chch meets and seen this outstanding car. Jason - perhaps PK could be persuaded into buying it as a company car for the PKMC lads ....
-
Hi Jason. I went into the Armagh St outlet when I had a flat after I picked up a nail as they were the closest to where I was at the time. They kindly fixed the puncture immediately and for free even though I had never been there before... and I de-stickered as soon as I got home! Downside was that the guy tried to fit me into some cheap Chinese tyres that were totally not suited to my car after he noticed a tyre close to non-WOF'able.

Hi, check out Adrian's E39 540, he's just listed it for sale http://www.bimmersport.co.nz/forums/index....c=26627&hl=

Today in Chch, turning right from Heaton St into Wairakei Rd at about 6pm Black 2 door E30 with ugly (to me) orange rims White BMW-NZ sticker on drivers side rear quarter window Driver (I'd say in his early 20's) was talking on his mobile while turning.... Yes, we made eye contact. He had that "I don't give a s#@t smirk" on his face Had to get that one off my chest !

ooops, sorry Nathan.... got caught up in the memories of 30 years ago

oooooh I've always dreamed of owning one of those ever since I was a youngster in the 70's. The 400i and the original 365 GT4 Berlinetta Boxer (later the 512BB) with the big V12's were the big Ferrari supercars of my day. Have you seen the one in Fazzazz here in Chch? $55k I think. There's also a 512BB as well for $125k ...
