  1. I'd love to have to pull one apart doubt ANYONE could put it back together... right, so there's the crown gear, and the planetary gear is.... so what the hell is this thing... And I'm sorry but can you imagine the gear hunting that would go on, particularly if it is in automatic guise. Foot down to overtake, drops 6 cogs, nope gaps gone, crap...
  2. I was wrapped with my 12.6l/100Km today coming home from work. Considering over the past few weeks I've averaged 16.6l and my onboard claims I've averaged 14.3L since I bought the car in October 2008 which means I've used 5,205L of 95 in 2.25 years
  3. Avoid the falken's like the plague - especially in the 19". I had all fours in 235/35/19... they were OK in the dry but either I found lots of oil spots on the road while I had these or they are a terrible tyre if it is wet or cold (even worse when its both). Though they had good lateral feel but trying to move the car in the wet or cold (particularly from a stop) was terrifying.
  4. I have driven on T1Rs and I'd never recommend them for anything. They felt numb and dragged all over the road. Not a terribly nice feeling mid-corner particularly when you are trying to put some pace on. I had been running T1Ss prior to this tyre, I miss those. That could have been a number of factors but I didn't like them. After about 3-4,000KM some nice person stole my car. I can't really comment on wear rates. I don't beleive the T1R can be compared to anything decent.
  5. You know I was on the other side of a similar situation today. A guy in a passat in a 100KM/H zone doing 60 stepping on the brakes, accelerating back up and mucking around with something in his centre console instead of looking ahead. He was doing 60 and stepping on the brakes because he thought there was traffic still in front of him. I eventually got past and he obviously realised because he then stuck to my bumper. I think in general NZ has a number incredibly awful drivers. Throw in the stress of an earthquake and constant aftershocks... A brilliant recipe.

^^ Looked at that pic and thought - they bought a baby one but on closer inspection... I retract that statement mmmm supercharged
  7. 14.1 L/100KM since I bought the car 20 months ago. Very mixed driving - 15.4 L/100KM at present
  8. Arghhh!!! I have a leak coming from the top of the oil filter housing on my 1998 540i. I know this can be caused by pinching the o-ring when replacing the oil filter. I took extreme care not to do this - but I have. I've replaced the o-ring and it appears I must've pinched the new one too!!! Does anyone know how to install the oil filter WITHOUT piching the o-ring??? This time it appears worse than the last time - its p***ing oil this time.

Yeah, I've been warned severly not to put spacers on - apparently amplify the infamous E39 shimmy. Though I've never been told why. Perhaps one of our more knowledgable members would know... If its caused by the tyres being too far in / out then perhaps spacers aren't so bad.

+25 on each - 5mm different than the standard wheels - but i think I need to go with a 0 offset and wider tyres at the back

ASA - "licensed by BBS". I had to get rid of the 19"s as I was sick of paying more attention to the bumps in the road than the vehicles on it.

Decided to take a photo of the car with the new wheels. This seemed like an adequate place to put it:
  13. Insolvency Technician - been doing a roaring trade lately and things had started to slow up. I imagine I'm gonna get real busy again shortly.

My favourite E39 in the world - MINE Though the wheels have changed - I just don't have a new photo - yet.
  15. I wonder what effect if any running the different tread patterns on each corner would make? From the photos it looks like each tyre is running a different tyre... Wonder if they ever gave a crap about the car? Need a database for people like this. As a result like this, they should only be allowed to buy a kia picanto.
  16. Gavin, You're a legend. How you manage to make a part arrive from Auckland only 17 hours after I order it I've no idea.
  17. I would also be keen and if anyone can explain the best way to remove and replace... I've not looked at it properly but I know one of mine has split... and I'd rather have an expert tell me how than work out that I could've done it better if I'd asked...
  18. Hey, I haven't been around in a while, figured I'd say hi again. And what better way to say Hi than gifts. Soo... I bring 32 gifts of pictures.
  19. I'd have no problem with that, but considering she's had 4 wisdom teeth removed today... I'll let someone else do the honours. I'm smart, but not that smart
  20. So driving in the car today and suddenly the stereo cuts out, the steering wheel rises up (like I've turned the car off) and power steering (feels like) disappears. Engine etc still running. Wondering what the hell just happened, my girlfriend closes the passenger sun visor mirror cover and everything comes back to life. I've had a look at it and I can see the nasty little blighter causing the issue. It's a small (unsheathed) copper wire which runs along the bottom of the mirror cover. How do I get at it to see how to fix the issue? Now I know that someone is going to tell me to take it to somebody with a brain, but unfortunately I can't afford that at this time. Any help at all would be greatly appreciated. Regards, Colin EDIT: Car: 1998 E39 540i
  21. That's how I got my avatar I also like the code immobilizer. I'm not 100% sure what will happen if you enter the code wrong though... Anyone?
  22. I've felt that a number of times myself. But usually only when cold. I've always just put it down to a temperature thing. Would be interested to see if it's the same thing.
  23. This thread brings up an interesting point. What's that second can for on the end of the standard set up? I assume it is to quieten the exhaust?
  24. Surely you can see why this has been done though. I mean, you get pulled over by the police for texting. "Sorry officer, I was just adjusting my GPS..." If you get pulled over adjusting your real GPS it's a no-brainer that you aren't texting. EDIT: I'd challenge anyone to come up with a distinctive way of preventing such a thing from happening.
