The only way to get arround this problem is to remove the seat and have a look at whats available to you in terms of attachment points and seat belt location/routing. If you do pull the seat take some pics and post em up so we can chuck some ideas arround otherwise we are all guessing.

Thanks for the comments guys!! Agreed with the thin time attack line. The tape definatly gave me an idea of what the final look will be even if it was a bit chunky.. Total cost......Admittedly probably not that far off what a new set would have cost ~$700. It would have been cheaper to paint them by quite a margin but more work to get the final result.

Ok use a little imagination but here is time attack vs plain. "On" the car. Time attack style via insulation tape Plain Thoughts and opinions?

Rainbow Powdercoaters. Great guys with good service. Price was $280 for 4 wheels 4 centre rings and 4 centre nuts. Price also included a pre-bake to make sure any old paint stayed put. A bit more than i was hoping for but these guys offered the best service and info. Without the prebake it would have been about ~$180. Prces vary with wheel size and complexity.

Ok the DIY write up, I thought i would tack it on the end of this thread instead of starting a new as then its all in one place. Step one: Obtain some wheels and make sure they are not too damaged. Curb rash can be dealt with in your workshop buckles can't. This is what I started with. Typical damage around rim. Step Two Get them cleaned. I chose bead blasting as it was a cheap available option to me at the time. Blasting strips the paint/powder coat finish and roughens the aluminium. This rough surface is great for keying in the new finish and bonding the filler. Paint stripper or acid dipis other options. I did need to strip a few areas the blaster missed Step Three Filling. This is the important part. I used Devcon F Aluminium putty. Its an aluminium filled putty used to rebuild aluminium parts therefore near equal density helping with balancing. Most importantly its chemically stable and can withstand the powder coating temp. Unfortunatly its unbelievably expencive (.5kg=$210) Devcon titanium filler is a cheaper option but has a lower working temp. I was lucky and obtained a sample of Decon F for free through a workmate. The rep at ITW the Devcon distributor though the Titanium would be borderline on the temp but required a test first to see. This is $20 a tube and will do several sets of wheels. Cleanliness is key so wire brush the wheel before with a stainless brush to remove oxide off the area to be worked on. It takes only a few hours to build oxide on fresh aluminium. File and sand carefully to shape All cleaned and ready to powdercoat. Step Four Powdercoat and enjoy. Powdercoat prices vary but most places seem to be familiar with wheels so should present no challenge. Rim edges looking like new Phew!

Wondered if you would recognise them... Unfortunatly yes, but this just means a bit more elbow grease for me to clean off

Buying a prebuilt car, cage suspension etc, has its benifits from the out of the box ready to race point of view, but consider the wear and tear a used race car will have on engine and chassis conponents. If its a long term thing, buying a car and building it up may be a better option instead of working through issues a molested car may have. kinda a "better the devil you know" thing.

My 2c and i could be completly wrong would be that acc covers rape councilling due to the differences in how each of these organisations are run and funded. My understanding of it is that Victim Support is an organisation which offers help from their internal team such as advice and referrals yet do not have the budget to fund the councelling itself. Acc on the other hand is set up to subsidise/fund persons who due to circumstances out of their control require medical attention be it mental of physical. Yes rape councilling fits under the moniker of Victim support better however ACC is set up to get rape victims the support they need via councelling etc

This was one of the first things i looked at as i have replace the headers due to cracking. There is a plenty of clearance though it could be possible that the shaft is bowed somewhere producing the clunk as it rotates? Will give this a go and see what i get. From memory the clunking seems to be at the same point in the turn. By the plastic spacer disc do you mean the coupler between the upper and lower shaft? Will check that too.

Car: e36 318is coupe manual 5/92 manufature Since I purchased the car the steering has a clunk while turning the wheel lock to lock or tightish carpark turns etc. The noise appears to come from the columb at around the fire wall. I have climbed over the car in the years i have owned it but never got to the bottom of it.. Is there a bushing/bearing in this area that may have flogged out? Ideas much appreciated
