youve said that before!!!!!!! Megameet 2019 ???

  2. ill never forget being in my dads mates V10 TDI toureg many moons ago when it was nearly new. had what i remember to be a 40 series Cruiser based off roader on trailer on the back. lights went green at the Haywards lights (back when there were such) and 5 up in the toureg we dragged off a 4/5/6 Evo (i remember the triangle lights) which at the time was crash hot to a young impressionable teen such as my self.

so although they have the wrong badge on the front, they do alright by me.

Do I need to actually go to taihape or take a right onto spooners hill road and back up to waiouru?

Is it better to go left to ohakune and up through via national park or straight up desert road (never been there)

Ideally would probably want to stop in taupo but not crucial

Yes you could turn right there, youve done most of it by that point.

As for left or straight ahead at Waiouru, thats up to you. SH1 is a town every 20km and very boring, and the constant left right every km or so of SH1B to avoid Hamilton is annoying, and is the slowest route, despite being SH1 the whole way.
Some people go SH1, turn right at Tirau and take SH27 on to SH2 and come out at Bombays. Both of these are uneventful routes.
As you know i do this run all the time, my preferred route is Ohakune/Taumaranui/Otorohanga/Pirongia/Ngaruawahia comes out at Taupiri. This is through the King Country area and very nice, you can stop at Raurimu Spiral not that you can see much but it is a good place to stop and let your dog have a peepoo and you can read a bit about it, and the Waitomo Caves if you like. there is also one of the highest rail bridges in NZ that the train goes over you about 12m or more above the road, which itself is more than 20m above the valley floor, there is a nice rest stop there and a nice spot for pictures etc . downside to this route is there is no cellphone or radio reception between Taumaranui and Te Kuiti so load up your spotify.

    hope this helps

  4. have done all of those roads. dont bother going around the point, its not worthwhile, just follow the river.

if you are able to add another day, do the gentle annie road back to Taihape and go north from there, turn left at Waiouru, prehaps stay a night in Ohakune, and then go up thru Taumaranui, turn left again at Otorohanga and follow the road thru to Ngaruawahia and up to your home.

My E30 is running the exact same setup as you! my main concern is that it wont pass a wof with that stretch.. had any issues?

sorry for the slow reply, no i havent, but the guys are usually too busy commenting on it being the tidiest they have every seen etc etc to actually look at anything too closely.

  7. Thanks for the name drop guys, i dont come on here all that much anymore! Yes can do if still needed tho i imagine freight to Invercargill would be somewhat prohibitive. its yours for $100 just let me know where i am dropping it, also have some M Twist side skirts as well if they are of interest, and a sedan/coupe rear etc.

So Zane from Auto Transmission Repairs in Plimmerton gave me a call …

    • loads of metal filings in the pan which is a bad sign
    • will require rebuild ; my MBI will cover ~50% of the cost
    • have asked him to email me more details of what he found and what he'll do...
    • he said that my is the older 5HP24 without a bunch of the later improvements ; and he has learned (the hard way) that if he repairs it is best to do it thoroughly and apply the updated components.
    • Apparently these transmissions drive OK even when they very worn - and then bang they crap out.

    Ouch ?

Hutt Automatics did mine, same findings.

Yeah wish I’d don’t that on mine too, but they were in too deep. If I had stopped and thought it would have been the better option.

  9. power antenna are a hard find these days bud, just buy new OE ones from Pelican Parts or similar. Radios are pretty hard to come by too, most were ripped out and binned in the 2000s. Have a look at this one which looks good and has blue tooth etc model number Continental TR7412UB-OR https://www.continental-automotive.com/en-gl/Trucks-Buses/Interior-Cabin/Infotainment/Radios/FM-AM-Radio-with-USB-Bluetooth

  10. dont try cutting and jumping wires etc, youll just end up blowing up modules etc. all its needs is 10 minutes with a scanner assuming all the parts have not failed.

bear in mind that the E36 is known for leaking around the windscreen if the plastic trim is damaged, it is not uncommon that water gets into the ECU/DME especially on manual cars that do not have a trans computer for the water to seep thru first!

Yup and take that quote to Tony's (call them) and they'll usually beat it.

maybe on price, but thats because their service is sh*t so they can afford it. Bridgestone are more expencive sure. but unless you want to take your own torque wrench, you want to tell them where to jack the car up etc, then keep well clear of all the Tonys branches. litterally the bunnings of tyres. Citation: i used to be a regular there for the work fleet and my own stuff.

I only ever use Bridgetone Wainui now, i appreciate that might be a bit far for you, but i like to take cars to actual enthusiests that treat the car the way you would. Sounds like Bridgestone in the city is the same experience based on what Richard says

  12. good to catch up etc mate :)

also, in regards to the people anti fenix above. interestingly one of them used to be an agent for them and at the time of selling it to me said there was nothing wrong with them. whats changed, a bad breakup with an employer perhaps ? anyways, the one in my coupe has seen heaps of abuse, 10 or 12 track days now, plus many drives locally to the pub or whatever, club days, hawkes bay and back taupo and back, every time at manfeild is driven up etc, and has never missed a beat, doesnt drop a single drop.

    so there you go.

    Hey Andy,

    Glad to chimed in :)

Just unloaded the container and had some BBS RS Rep's loaded in the following spec's.
    16x8 8/100-114.3 +20P
    16x9 8/100-114.3 +15P
    Silver with Machined Lips
Thinking 205/45R16 and 225/40R16 but may go 215/45R16.
Guards will be Rolled, will run Spacers to get it maxed to outer edge or to match front if need caliper clearance.... this Coupe will have lowering springs, currently H&R but think it needs to go lower... maybe Dobi's.

Should I bother with the 225/40R16 or just go 215/45R16?

    Thanks Brent

wont bother with specs in the front, if its rubbing then you have done something very wrong/silly

the most important cosideration, even more than specs of the wheel itself, is what gaurds are on your car. rear is a bit trickier on a facelift car, and also the prefacelift cabby, as they have much lower rear arches. on the prefacelift non cabby there is plenty of room to do whatever you want. so what one prefacelift owner says fits sweet no rubbing at all will destroy gaurds if fitted to a facelift car. Both of my cars, and indeed all E30s that i have bothered playing around with wheels on have been facelift.

    now thats out the way.....:

my cabby is 16x9et15 (borbet type A) with 215/45R16 tyres, and it rubs , my gaurds are not rolled at all, apart from some movement probably inevitable when it has touched now and again. a 205 might be better, but the 215 already has quite a bit of stretch on a 9 inch.

my coupe is 17x8et20 (E39 Style 32s) with 215/45R17 (yes slightly bigger tyre than both OE and the cabby), and again rubs in the back, a bit less than the cabby. if i put the race wheels on which has the same specs but is et30 or so, there is plenty of room.

enter this data into the calculator linked below, and scroll down and see the graphic. overlay your wheel, and play around with tyre sizes (the only variable).

bear in mind, the calculator will allow you to do tyre sizes that dont exist, are cost prohibitive, or illegal eg you can fit a 145 tyre onto a 9 inch rim in that system ha. also you need to compare whatever you come up with to the OE tyres of 205 65 14, and check the circumfrence is within 5% of that, if possible, go slightly smaller, as your speedo is out from factory.

    https://www.willtheyfit.com/index.php?width=215&aspect=45&diameter=16&wheelwidth=9&offset=15&width2=215&aspect2=45&wheel_size=17&wheel_width=8&offset2=20

  14. i have Eibach coupe springs and Bilstein sport shocks in my cabby, gives a nice height.

i am running a 9" wheel in the back with a 215 tyre. they just kiss the gaurds if i have the boot loaded up with stuff, a full tank of gas and i go over a bump otherwise its fine, the shocks could probably do with a refresh as they are pretty old, i would say it wouldnt do it if the shocks were new.
