Is parking a car with no WOF outside your house illegal?
Phil-540i replied to Dingo's topic in General Discussion
That's classic.........................!!!!!!!!!!! -
Its quite impressive really..........not often you see a Euro car with that mileage in NZ.......on youtube theres quite a few BMW's with well over 200k miles on them........ As Andy said - servicing plays a bit part, as does how its driven - eg, don't thrash the snot outa it when motor / drive train is still cold........
-
Its come a long way from what you started with!! Primo - well done!!
-
I think he's got a Subaru at the mo - if its a turbo one then virtually anything with wheels or wings is more economic on fuel...........

540i coolant leak, failed heater control valve?
Phil-540i replied to tangalife's topic in Maintenance
Nice that you & Ray are yarning about it. I'm a big fan of acknowledging that every-one has certain stuff that they are usually really good at (theres always exceptions to that rule though...), & I'm fairly analytical about things, so if this was my car, I'd be asking myself some questions..... a) Whats worst case scenario / cost of me not fixing this?? (Cooked motor, effectively making vehicle un-economical to repair - wrecking value only) B. Whats worse case scenario / cost of me trying to fix this, but getting it all wrong?? (Including doing a proper bleed of air, pressure testing system, etc etc) c) Do I have my own previous experience / mechanical knowledge that can be called on?? d) Do I have the likely tools, parts, & work area for doing this job? e) Etc etc to above. Sometimes its not quite as simple as googling stuff & 'giving it a nudge', in my opinion, particulary when its your own pocket that's paying if it all goes pear-shaped..... If you haven't got really good mechanical skills, I liken it to being a bit like finding out you've got (for example.......), a brain tumour. Would you take 4 disprin, grab a pocket knife & a mirror to do the op yourself?? Edit. Lols, Glenn since posted........... -
You'll have to let me know what its like on fuel - theres a chance I'm going to be needing something else in the near future, & a 2.8 E39 appeals (actually, its really the only 6 that appeals much to me), so I'd probably look at a 528 if I couldn't find a 540 - I'd just keep the E34 for weekends that way. Nice this has got the ACS bits too!! Need more pics, haha!!

Mmmm, nice project, particulary if it was cheap. (No, I don't wanna know how much - I'll just kick myself on missing it for the rims alone!!) Should be fun!!

I've fixed that up a bit for ya............. Of course, once its on the trailer, the only thing to worry bout then when its out on roadside, is the drop-kick midnight spares retards hooking up the whole lot & dragging it away........ -
540i coolant leak, failed heater control valve?

I suggest your car needs a hot date with Ray @ HellBM - Hellbm.com 0212435526 or 09 4268269 He's a member here Hellbm, user name. Whatever he'd charge to fix it, is way way cheaper than scenario of it getting cooked, or job being done incorrectly........ -

I agree with Allan - URGENTLY needs looked at by some-one who knows what they are doing. Putting in 3-4 litres of water is not a good sign, as they're not really a air-cooled motor. As Allan has pointed out - temp gauge will not register 'steam'............. Where are you based?? -

Phil-540i replied to Dingo's topic in General Discussion
Yes, because technically its no longer a vehicle - its a 'load'. -
Yea, that was my first thought too re passenger door lock till I clicked that doesn't solve the problem...........mines 1995 build, & not that it helps any, but the keyless bit plays up on mine - drivers door doesn't 'always' lock via the remote, & if you try to unlock with the fob, its 50/50 on whether the system has had baaaaad drugs while you're away, & thus factory alarm goes berko when door opens.... Very unkooooooool!!!

These are the only keys its got?? Mine came with 3..........2 with fob. Somewhere 2 keys have been lost for yours I think, & it sounds like you only really have the valet key for the car itself...........???

Given my car normally gets dirty just going out the driveway, here's actual proof that it has been cleaned for tomorrow. Yes, real soap suds , a proper brush & all!! (Normally my definition of 'washing a vehicle' revolves around aiming a petrol powered waterblaster at my 4WD, sometimes daily). An excuse to have a play with camera too......but not great!! Wanted to have my exhaust 'done' by now, but just hasn't happened yet............

Correct - that's why people can & do still get ticketed if the 'human element' leads to mistakenly putting the new vehicle licence (rego) behind the old one - if its got a current vehicle licence, but it is not displayed - you're still open to be ticketed... -

Westy, those magic words that Kye wouldn't give ya yesterday - "You're right!!" And your speelcheckr is still broked...... -

I like the idea lots, but then they'll just lift one end of the cover, run the plate, & issue the ticket anyway. Plus if its on a road, you'd maybe then run the risk of being done for 'no rear red reflector' when its parked out there at night - the council guys are seriously picky down in Chch ae...... -
Lols - I'll 'fix' that post for ya............. Edit - that's being harsh on Levin, but given some of the 'gems' ya came out with yesterday, was starting to wonder if you're maybe from Apiti or Shannon........

Yes, hate to break it to you but it is illegal, & they are hard on it in Chch, bigtime. Nice money-making scheme really in circumstances like yours. Comes back to 'legal definition of a road' & various bits in the Land Transport Act. If they're being really queer, they can ticket it on the grass verge outside your place too.......stupid bit is the fine in your situation, is twice what it is for a 'moving vehicle' violation (Eg, if you'd been driving it with no wof........) Letter, & 'expecting them to be reasonable' while they are finding an excuse to extract money from you?? Hmm - you want the Tui ad guys to ring you on landline or mobile........ -
Wee hint for ya then - walk next door.................. Ya could always bring Mum with ya - still counts as spending time with her then........... Edit - 'Mum' - aka your missus - woman - girlfriend - other half - better half - chick - significant other - brains of the operation - wahine - lay of the day - wife - partner - best friend. (Please pick an option that best applies to you...........) If 'Mum' is charging you per 15min time interval - none of the above applies...........

Looks tidy - I remember seeing it before too. Funny, as just car-jammed it - registered as a 520i, NZ new. It gives 0--------->100k time of 12.5 seconds. I'd see that as a negative personally, as that probably makes a diesel Hilux, a ride on lawn mower, & paint drying, seem fast by comparison.......
-
If you're in Palmy area, why not go to the Tui day tomorrow - some-one might have one there maybe that you could maybe have a supervised drive in......... Jeff Gray got any in Palmy on the lot??
-
Don't--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------->BREAK it ae!!! Be nice if ya get to enjoy it a bit before ya have to swing spanners on the girl again...........!!
-
Yo - given the brain damage this conversion appears to be giving ya at times - I take it we are still using the correct vocabulary like above nearly 2 weeks later...... Tough it out - you're on the home stretch now, honest!!
-
Awesome car..........!! I keep thinking to myself - "If this is what you're selling, what on earth are ya then buying......??!!"
