  1. Hmmm, did it have the widescreen monitor display?

I wouldnt even know what that was haha but again, i was purely there for the engine and didnt take much notice of anything else sorry mate.

I turned up a couple minutes after you got there for this lol. :(

Haha so that was you. Sorry dude, you gotta be quick i guess. I made sure i was there early so i didnt miss out on it or using the one engine hoist they have.

Where in Welly are they also do you have a contact number please.

    They are in Wingate http://www.pickapart.co.nz/locations.asp

Pretty sure they dont have a phone number and wouldnt be any help if you ever were able to call them.

Had a good play with the motor tonight and basically found out there is no trace of water in the oil (oil is very old and dirty though) and no oil in the cooling system (thermostat housing looked brand new inside).

I couldnt pull the plugs though as I dont know where all my spark plug sockets have disappeared to.

Im gonna put it back together a bit, hook up a flywheel, gearbox and starter to compression test it. May not be until the weekend though.

  2. Score!! Don't suppose you remember what spec the stereo was?

Edit: If youre not planning on using the MS43 DME pm Silver Fox. He knows a thing or two (or fifty!) about what to do with these engines :D

Second edit: Got the VIN for this, by any chance??

Didnt take note of the stereo sorry but the Vin is WBADT62070CK19509 and the plate was GGJ662.

Still got to decide how to go about running it. Still learning about these 24V's. Will most likely go the simplest option, OBD1 or whatever but does anyone know if there is anyone who can do a good tune to suit down here in Wellington if go that route?

    good score.

    was the car accident damaged??

or just old and wornout looking.

check millage off the cars vin number in carjam.

what colour is the oil , thin or thick etc??

pull the plugs out check colour and condition etc.

whats the state of the thermostat and water pump etc

plastic coolant pipes on the block etc??

compression check will help , bolt up a gearbox and starter motor etc

    gearbox can be any m40 m20 m42 m43 m50 m52 etc

No big hit but maybe a very minor frontal impact but couldnt really tell. Car was pretty un tidy so im gonna hope its a combination of those things that lead it to end up at Pick a Part but its only done 177k.

Ive only taken the oil filter cap off so far to take a look and found rather dark dirty oil. Was happier to see black oil than chocolate milk though.

I will have a proper look at it tomorrow evening and will report back here. I will naturally be replacing as much of the cooling system as i can so im not too worried about that, its really just the head and block i care about.

I have gearboxes, E30 flywheel and starter so will look into compression testing it some time.

  3. So yesterday I grabbed on a M54B30 from a NZ new E39 at pick a part. It turned over and seemed to have no sign of water in the oil or vise versa so i pounced on it as it could be the perfect powerplant for the e30 race/club car im building. About an hour and a half and $289 (charged for a 4cyl) later, it was mine.

So im new to these 24v motors and I need to know what im working with here. I really want to know if its good to go and not rooted.

What should i be checking to make sure its still usable as is? Eg how can I be sure the head gasket isn't blown? Not too keen to take the head off unless i have to. Should I re torque the head bolts to check if the head hasn't pulled the studs out and buggered the thread in the block??

What else should i be checking?

It has done 170,000kms going by car jam (so should be only just run in) but worryingly the car hadn't been in a big hit. It was just in really bad shape.

    Cheers

  4. Im after an ECU for my Motronic 1.0 pfl 325 e30. Pretty sure its the 073 so go check the numbers on all those ecus lying under your work benches.

Must be in perfect working condition.

You can PM me here or contact me on 022 0405096

    Cheers

  5. He probably does know, thats how he got the fine. They would have sent him a letter saying his car has been unlicensed for 12 months and is now deregistered... heres a fine for $200.

Hes probably betting on someone not checking or knowing the process.

How do you check the state of a cars registration BTW? Cant just look it up for free on CarJam anymore??

  6. What an interesting thought! Will explore this as I'd like new ones if/when I get the tech1 on...

Sent from my Nexus 5 using Tapatalk

Mtech trim is actually slightly different to normal trim so you will need it anyway. Basically its designed to fit over the kit and not directly to the bumper. rear rubber strip is longer and all.

Ive heard of people restoring them with products and looked into it but in the end i just painted my front and side trim with a trim paint.

  7. I would recommend Khandallah/Ngaio area not only because ive grown up there, but because its in the middle and close to everything but still out of the way enough. Its 10min (off peak) to the CBD, 10min to the Hutt and a short 5min drive to Johnsonville where there is a shopping centre etc. If you are prepared to pay, Mt Vic and Thorndon are great areas super close to the city.

  8. If i remember correctly, Aaron had a previous business that went tits up meaning he couldnt own a business again. Him and another guy (cant remember his name) started Shred but when this guy smartly wanted out, Aaron wasnt able to take it over and thats when Geoff stepped in. Sounds like Aaron just took Geoff for a ride.

Only a couple of months ago, my mate had his car tuned there but had the car handed back missing badly. Aaron claimed it was the dizzy etc so my mate replaced all ignition parts but the miss remained. My mate then could never get hold of Aaron again, he never returned calls etc and basically didnt want anything to do with my mate. In the end he took it elsewhere to finish off the tune.

  9. Diamanteschwarz for sure. Unless youre planning on keeping the car forever and stripping it right down and doing it properly.

It wont be original though and it will kill it in my opinion. The tech 1's were only offered in limited colours it seems and seeing one another colour would look odd to me. My initial thought when seeing it would be that its not a genuine tech 1 and has just had the kit and badges stuck on.

Really depends if you want to keep the car looking quite original or not.

  10. Yeah i always do that but didnt know its necessary and can cause the seals to go if there is air in the system. I always thought it eventually makes its way out anyway.

I went to pick a part in my lunch hour today and got a rack from a 98 e36. It all swapped in and seems to be fine.

  11. Dropped my E30 m325i (fitted with e36 rack) to get a warrant today and she passed no problems but as i was picking her up at 5pm, the guy said the mechanic mentioned something but couldnt remember what. Didnt effect it getting a wof so didnt really matter. As i went to leave, i realsied that the steering was a rather heavy and it felt as if it had very little PS fluid. Just thought id take a look when i arrived home and continued driving.

After arriving home, i found all the PS fluid sitting in both steering rack boots which now resemble pumped up balloons.

I dont know if they did anything or if it was just bad timing but i do know that all was well this morning when i dropped it off.

Now, when one of these racks shits itself, is this usually what happens?

What could have caused both sides to fail like this?

Is there a valve that could have been stuck open in the PS pump or something?

I dont really know much about power steering systems but i'll have to go to pick a park tomorrow and get a new rack to throw in after work and dont want it doing the same thing if its not the racks fault.

  12. Do you know if the PFL and FL exhaust had the same sized piping? You reckon i can get them to just use the current flange on my old exhaust to hook up to my current manifold?

Unsure, but i assume they would.. then again, i assumed the flanges would be the same between FL and PFL but when i went to bolt my exhaust up, it just wouldn't go and it took me awhile to figure it out that they were ever so slightly different.

Yes if the flange turns out to be the different size then you could get it swapped off your old one easy enough.

  13. I just put a fl m20b25 in my pfl 325i and found out the flange on the manifolds is a slightly different length between them.

The fl manifold flange was about 10mm longer length ways but the width was the same im pretty sure. This small size difference means you cant really tell just by looking at them, they need to be measured.

I have this fl manifold i can sell you if you wanna measure the spacing between the holes of your exhaust flange and let me know.
