I learned similar peculiarities about the E4 engine in my B3. 1998, single vanos iron block 3.2 sharing very little with the M50 and nothing intake or exhaust with the Mxx engines. God help me if I need a head gasket.

Lovely machine the B3, I tried to import #180 B3 3.3 2 years ago, but the costs and process to have it landed in NZ from UK was painful...

  2. I've found out the following from other Alpina forums if anyone's interested

'Only the V8s had the bespoke casting made by bmw for alpina, so thats not a regular block, there are differences as you can't just over bore these blocks.'

'Alpina to work their magic with new crankshaft, more aggressive camshafts, hand-fettled ports, lighter higher-compression Mahle pistons and reprogrammed the Motronic system.'

    This chap knows his Alpinas!

'Jon - id say it's a bit more complicated than it might first appear. Your car will be an F4 engine which you can confirm from digits 12-14 of your ALPINA VIN (F40)

There have been five variants of 4.6 V8 produced by ALPINA.
     - F2/0 (M60B40): for the E34 B10 4.6, this had a custom block, crankshaft & airbox
     - F2/1 (M60B40): which was a modified version of the F2 specifically for the E36 B8 4.8. Changes included: modified air intake, engine mounts, oilpan and exhaust manifold which restricted power from 340PS/480Nm to 333PS/470Nm

     - F3/0 (M62B44): launched in the E39 B10 V8, the modifications included: custom block, crankshaft, pistons, camshaft and air intake.
     - F4/0 (M62B44TU): launched mid-way through the production of the E39 B10 V8 following BMW's technical update which added single VANOS to both intake camshafts and fly-by-wire throttle.
     - F4/1 (M62B44TU): the basis of the E39 B10 V8/1 which was introduced with the E39 LCI. This was an updated version of the F4 engine focussing on improved fuel efficiency and emissions.

    Other M60/M62 based engine variants:
     - F5/0 (M62B44TU): this is the 4.8 engine used in the E39 B10 V8S and E52 Roadster V8. The main changes over the F4/1 were an increased stroke (85mm to 89mm) and revised crankshaft, intake camshafts and oilpan.
     - M62B46: this is BMW's productionised version of the F4 engine which was installed in the X5 4.6iS & Morgan Aero 8. It is similar to the ALPINA engine it is based upon, but not all parts are interchangeable.'

Awesome Jon you must be very happy.

The Aplina cast block is what gets me, I wonder if there is more information about it.

Is it a M62 block design but just improved to meet their specs for 4.6L, does the same supplier of BMW make it? Are these blocks only used in E39 B10 cars?

Such a special step you don't hear about too often, talk about an expensive way to increase performance haha. Very cool either way.

Super happy given the time involved to purchase, I made an offer 2yrs ago which was higher than what I paid this week.

I will make some enquiries about the block on a couple of Alpina groups in Europe that I follow.  The Alpina-Archive is interesting, I learnt a lot from it.

  4. Great looking example, well done!  NZ new with this spec & engine is rear.

I followed listing but figured it would need $4-5 k spent on preventative maintenance & panel/paint which in reality is well with the investment as it's a glws machine.  Given the moderate 6 private owners outstanding maintenance is a fact of life sadly as many owners do not spend on future proofing the investment.

I ended up purchasing a car with the same engine though last month instead.

  5. Interesting thread gents.  It's an ultimate Q/car in my book.

This B10 finally arrived up my drive 30/09/21, 2years until the dealer finally cut his losses & let it go, seeing sense an agreeing to a price starting with a 2... since imported 12/12/18 it's travelled '5' kms in total.  Full service history, Alpina wallet, handbook etc.

Stats below that might be of interest or not:

    ENGINE/GEARBOX

The B10 V8 is based on the BMW 540i, which has a 286 bhp, 4.4 litre V8 engine. As the BMW V8 engine has Nicasil (later Alusil) coated bores, the block can’t just be over-bored, a whole new block needs to be cast for Alpina by BMW with the displacement increased to 4.6 litre. Alpina have also made other changes to the engine such as a new crankshaft, more aggressive camshafts, hand-fettled ports, lighter higher-compression Mahle pistons and reprogrammed the Motronic system. The result is 340 bhp (254kw) and 470 Nm of torque at 3800 rpm, 100 rpm lower than standard. From 1999 onwards the engine produces 347 bhp (probably more if you look at the much improved performance figures) and a torque of 480 Nm. The B10 V8 has a ZF 5-speed automatic gearbox with the steering wheel mounted Switch-Tronic system as standard.

    SUSPENSION/BRAKES/WHEELS

The B10 V8 has twin-tube gas pressure shock absorbers at both front and rear. It also has new anti-roll bars. The brake discs are ventilated all around and have floating calipers. The Alpina alloys are 18″ with 235/40 tires at front and 265/35 at rear. Michelin tires of course. Optionally available were 19″ wheels.

  7. Hi, the UK plate is what's called in the UK a 'cherish plate' I believe.  UK system of Registration is completely different, that plate could be 25 to 35 years old as Registration Plates are allocated by numbers to the different Counties in the UK and can be sold I've been told.

Yes B3 3,3 doesn't meet modern Regs for impact or Euro IV but I've made application to NZTA to import & register in NZ under 'special interest vehicle'

  8. Selling vehicle on TM depends on how quickly the Seller needs to sell the vehicle for financial reasons or even to avoid long over due maintenance repairs.  I made the mistake last year of purchasing a pretty special S/C Autobiography on a whim within 10mins of the test drive as the 340 kw hooked me but at $300 a tank to fill and sh*t load of overdue maintenance needing attention I sold it just before Christmas for nearly $10k less, lucky we have $ trees in the Sth Isl ?.

Note to self only buy BMW's or Alpina's with full service history and low ownership in the future.

Like this superb B3 3.3 which is this years birthday present if NZTA let her into NZ!

  9. Thank you for the replies gents.

The e12 are a are great shape and pretty bullet proof mechanically I've heard if maintain.

This example has an interesting back story being purchased in Germany direct from the factory, then travelled around in Europe by a doctor on a working holiday for 2 years prior to arriving home in NZ.

The owner will only sale to an enthusiast, $12-$15k seems reasonable to me.

    Happy motoring, Jon

  10. Hi all,

I need some advise please with what mechanical & body items to look out for on a pre purchase inspection on this 1978 520.

I spoke to the owner at length today, the e12 is certainly genuine, low original kms, factory spec'd options with a great back story in Europe.  'Bluey' has only 1 true owner as ordered direct in Germany prior to taking the long way home over 2 years for a valid reason.

Any advise would be greatly received.  Thank you in advance, Jon

  11. Thank you @Eagle, @M3AN, @Matth5 feedback much appreciated.  My rears 255/18 Front 235/18 on existing F1 A2s came with Milliy on purchase in November which I’m really happy with.  The new model F1 A5s on online review came in overall #3 Best Performance tyre which will do me I’m thinking as my little 325ci is more fun than extreme performance.  M3 is the next purchase mid next year!

  12. Hi all, I'm looking to replace set of tyres prior to the festive season annual road trips in particular up to Hampton Downs for the BMW Festival.

Looking at replacing with Eagle F1 Asymmetric 5 as have the previous model all round now.  Does anyone rate theses tyres or suggestions with alternatives please?

What is the performance and drivability difference like?

@zero  nice difference with secondary cats removed & 2" pipes.  Sounds better without the typical drone noise and a little difference with performance but in reality like stated there's not a real increase in power which never was the aim. Happy motoring over the festive season.
