mark247 39 Report post Posted November 5, 2008 (edited) Ok so i have a 1988 E30 325i. I bought it for $4000 but i paid that much because thats how much I sold my old one for and thought it was reasonable. I am wondering seriously though how much it is worth, for insurance, and just because I would like to know. So here it goes, its black, manual 5 speed, done 65,000miles ( less than 120,000km ), has an LSD, full black recaro leather interior in good condition, no cracks in the dash, no rust other than a bubble on the sunroof, and has a brand new fuel pump, cambelt, tensioner, waterpump, and all that. It also is lowered 35mm on Apex springs and has had the guards rolled slightly to fit the 205s, but i had them repainted at the same time so looks good. oh and it also has slotted front discs from EBC brakes on the front which are brand new. Any ideas how much? Edited November 5, 2008 by Mark247
westy 614 Report post Posted November 5, 2008 (edited) For insurance? Sweet f**k all. $3000 at most. And that may be a stretch. It doesn't matter how much you insure for, the insurance co gets to decide in the event of a write off. 323e30 0 Report post Posted November 5, 2008 (edited) if your with national auto club insurance, you value the car and you pay accordingly to that value. so if its a write off thats the amount you get. ild say an amount you would be happy to sell the car for i guess. (without getting ridiculous) Edited November 5, 2008 by 323e30

jjs 64 Report post Posted November 5, 2008 And for resale value on trademe for example? any idea? Short answer: as much as someone is willing to pay for it. Are you trying to sell it?

EDIT: Mark247, where did you find this car? Is that the one for sale in Auck a while back? Looks mint! Edited November 5, 2008 by gannetboy
mark247 39 Report post Posted November 5, 2008 Are you trying to sell it? Not trying, but I guess if i got an offer I would always consider =D EDIT: Mark247, where did you find this car? Is that the one for sale in Auck a while back? Looks mint! Yea it was in Auckland for sale around 2 months ago. He wanted $4500 for it but he didnt say it had an LSD and he thought the cambelt was "fine" when infact i just got it changed and the mechanic said the tensioner had nearly snapped. kingkarl 136 Report post Posted November 5, 2008 Awesome car man, 4000 is an outstanding price. i made this topic when i saw it advertised http://www.bimmersport.co.nz/forums/index....showtopic=18263 and was sooooooo close to making the trip up to buy it. Because its all fairly original, low kms, high spec, manual and sweet colour, I'd be happy to pay at least 5.5-6.5k for it. Im not really a bargain hunter though, and you'll get the odd jew offering you half that for it. If i ever see you driving round Tauranga ill feel eternally jealous! Lol in that thread they are saying the k's are dodgy. The reason for that is that the odometer broke. I checked on carjam and it broke around a year or two ago ( i cant remember exactly ) and he never fixed it. He said he had done around 5000km since it was broken so i believe him. I took the odometer out and took it apart and found one of the gears between the electric motor and the numbers had teeth shared off it. So i took another gauge cluster apart and replaced the gear with one from there. It's now fine. So when i sell it I will just add a generous amount of miles to the amount displayed. If ya see me give us a wave. I thought it was a pretty good deal, I didn't realise it had an LSD until my mate was checking out the car once i had bought it and saw the diff had a S on it, I was pretty stoked with that. If you wanna pay $6000 you can have it for $6000!!!! But then again, I am happy with it for now.

bravo 35 Report post Posted November 5, 2008 (edited) I think you're about right for the $4-5k. More or less original 325i manual with LSD, a few extras, and in a popular colour. I've successfully argued the value of a written off car with an insurance co. had a mint 1-owner mk I escort that was written off when a van went up its arse. They were going to pay $2k as that was the going rate. This thing was mint - all original, 1 owner before me, perfect. Had a classic car valuer come take a look and valued it at $5k. I got my $5k, and got to keep the wreck which I later sold for another $500. My e30 is valued at what I'd expect to have to pay to get something remotely similar, and even then I probably wouldn't be able to - too many mods and money spent. If I had to claim, and the insurance co kicked up a stink I'd probably take them to small claims and probably win (small claims tends to favour you if you're truly been hard done by, and not just being greedy - they work on the theory that my hardship of not getting paid out what the car is worth is worse than the insurance co's hardship of paying the extra). They're supposed to put you back in the position you were in before the accident happened. I've had my fair share of fights with insurance companies, and I find if you get the right person on the phone, argue your case, don't get emotional, and stick to facts, you usually get what you want. Apex 693 Report post Posted November 5, 2008 Good on ya man, my brother in-law is an assessor and there training is like the fricken army, they are instructed to find every which way out of a claim. I have no idea how insurance companies come up with numbers and figures or even stay in business. I insured my Touring for 15k because that’s what It owes me and if it went missing or was damaged it would be hard to replace, they didn’t seem to have any issue with that and they just charge me accordingly… They did however get my Number plate, address (even though they insure my house), Alarm/Immobiliser and name wrong. They charged us less to insure a Brand new 41k Turbo 2.0ltr Astra per year than my partners 15k 1.5Ltr Toyota IST?? They also billed the wrong person for an entire year before noticing.. then abused that person for not notifying them. I love my insurance company. Keep calm and stick to the facts both when you take the insurance in the first place or when you have to make a claim.
westy 614 Report post Posted November 5, 2008 And for resale value on trademe for example? any idea? Forget about that. Prices vary so wildly and the insurance co wont rely on those prices. You can always have it valued by a specialist. You may or may not be disappointed though. And you often have to pay. I personally wouldn't bother with agreed value on a car of that value, but get some quotes and see whether you like the idea. There are depreciation calcs that insurance co's use to revalue the car each year. If you dont agree with that valuation, then you need to provide another valuation. There is probably little difference in premium between valuing it at $5000 as opposed to $3000, so you choose. And Bravo's 100% right. Insurance is meant to put you back in the same position as you were before any accident. You provide good proof on the value, they will pay.
Carl 3 Report post Posted November 5, 2008 There is probably little difference in premium between valuing it at $5000 as opposed to $3000, so you choose. Yip, I have my E30 insured for $6k and figured i'd drop it to $5k to save a little on the premium, didn't bother in the end cause it was only a matter of 50c per fortnight.
