Guest Ari Gold Report post Posted March 14, 2010 (edited) In this thread we post BMW motors and engine bays that make us weak at the knees, a short description is nice, but not required. I'll start: BMW 3.0 CSL M49 race motor: upright mount, slide throttles, twin chain driven cams, and exhaust the size of a sewer. Guest Ari Gold Report post Posted March 14, 2010 E21 320i Group 5 M12/7: reversed head, The gold pieces on the motor (cam tray, lower timing cover and slide throttle case) are all magnesium - likely that the oil pan is well although they did construct these of aluminum as well. Valve covers were also magnesium......all in the name of saving a few ounces.

_ethrty-Andy_ 2132 Report post Posted March 14, 2010 On the performance side of things, McLaren contracted BMW to hand build the S70/2 engine, a 6.1 litre four cam 48 valve V-12 that provided 627 horsepower to the wheels and 479 pound feet of torque through a six speed racing gearbox. This allowed the car to accelerate from 0-60 mph in only 3.1 seconds and achieve a top speed of 231 mph.
