Phil-540i 166 Report post Posted December 10, 2013 Warn the Mrs. you're going to be a grouchy bastard for a few weeks Best of luck Lols - Thanks. She is quitting again too ( a day ahead of me.........), but not doing cold turkey bit - Zyban I think.........so probably gonna be a competition on whats most grouchy........ Have read it three times, first time quit for two years, then got into cigars, then cigarettes... book only works once, now its as simple as will power and getting the drug out of the system for three weeks. For me It is hard when socializing, I love having a drink and a smoke with my mates. Hmm, I tend to not socialise much, but use smoking in a reverse way - once I've had enough of all the noise etc, its easy to decamp out the back somewhere for some Peace & quiet, using the excuse of 'wanting a smoke', before going another round........... Book only works once - hmmmm.......... I've stayed busy most of the day - that's helped............. I never suffered from that. I could still socialise, drink beer, sit with smokers and it never and never has worried me or made me want to smoke again. The smell is recogniseable.. but doesn't worry me. I feel sorry for woman smokers because they stink... more than their nice perfume Hmmmmm, I'm picking it'll get to me a bit for a start...............it'll be alright though. Ahmedsinc 414 Report post Posted December 10, 2013 New job, new start. I agree wholeheartedly with Grahams comment about substitution not working, I've been munching on the gums & patches for three years now and I've only just admitted to myself that they're a have. Started at fourteen, just turned thirtyfour and over it. An 8 month old son that I utterly adore and would do anything for is reason enough to die an old man, not a smoker. 3 fags left in the box Pray for me!!
BreakMyWindow 1874 Report post Posted December 10, 2013 I read the alan carr book twice, even attended the seminar. Each attempt lasted 3weeks tops. I am now 3months smoke free. The first week is hell. The second like attending an opera/ballet show. The third week gets easier and you start to forget about it. One thing I noticed on this attempt and hopefully my last is the bloated feeling I had for the first 2weeks. It was awful and discouraging. I took champix this time round, if you can hack the vivid dreams of the engine in your M5 throwing a leg out, it actually does work.

An 8 month old son that I utterly adore and would do anything for is reason enough to die an old man, not a smoker. 3 fags left in the box Pray for me!! At some levels I'd probably fairly happily help ya finish those 3 at the mo Matt............but I'm not a smoker any more. I probably started around 17ish, & did lots of years doing mental hours at work every week on machinery etc, with generally smokes, stereo, & coffee to while away the hours........... I'm not gonna pray for ya, as such, or wish ya luck (as I tend to find that's always the kiss of death, haha), but ya can do it. I worked out ages ago that one of the things I needed to do, in order to be a non -smoker, is just stop buying cigarettes. I know that sounds insanely simple, but its actually part of it - filling up with diesel & 2 packs of smokes to go, --brain needs retrained on 'its a fuel stop only' sorta thing.......... In honesty, etc etc Matt, heres a thought for ya. That 8 month old son that ya adore, I've got one of those too. I'm proud of his younger brother too.........both are in their early 20's. Both smoke...........which is not good............maybe your giving it up will help keep your son from making it a habit...... I've never tried the patches. Have tried the gum, for 1 day, ages ago - damn but it was disgusting taste!!! I'm chewing lollipops etc today, but am also quite conscious that I don't wanna gain too much weight. I'm 6'2", & never been over 79kg yet..............

I lost near 30kg in the time I have quite, I took on a new attitude to looking after myself and being careful about what I ate, I found abstaining from nicotine was similar to abstaining from food so it wasn't too hard... also found I could breath better and ran a marathon. I think you you need to look at it as a total lifestyle change, a new lease on life, embrace it.
Phil-540i 166 Report post Posted December 10, 2013 Hard to keep up there Graham, but you're quit too finally then.............???
Apex 693 Report post Posted December 10, 2013 Quit cigarettes, I am still a sucker for a Cigar when socializing and I am still a nicotine addict, still really struggle in a social environment with mates, its very hard when I associate having a good time with drinking and smoking, I truly do enjoy both, I think even more so than the socializing it self.... So I have become a lot less social these days... but as you get older you have to let things go and focus on more important things.
Phil-540i 166 Report post Posted December 10, 2013 Yea, true that last bit, & I guess we all have different definitions of what 'older' is..................... Funny, as reading through this thread the other day, wasn't too hard to see Glenn struggled at times just with other $hit going on too probably in the background - just makes ya wanna go "F#ck it......"really, - process to work through though I suppose........... I almost wish I had been a smoker and had quit just to save that much money from not smoking. Instead I prob spent that much money on heaps of F all. I donated about that to the city of Vegas this year.

bellicose 9 Report post Posted January 7, 2014 Ironic this thread gets bumped today. The stars have aligned today, thread gets bumped...........i JUST ran out of tobacco................and libary e-mailed me an hour ago to say the Alan Carr book i reserved last month is ready to be picked up. So today is MY day to start being a non smoker. Kinda been thinking about it for the last couple of months but the will power has been super lacking. But finally decided there are a few things i wouldn't mind buying (cars haha) and thought 'ok, so stop smoking and use the money from that' Although i can buy those things now with some funds i have why not kill 2 birds..........stop smoking and buy cool sh1t. The only hurdle i see will be that i work at home by myself and always have a smoke on the go when sanding / prepping stuff. BE GONE YOU FILTHY HABIT, 30 years is long enough. *Glenn* 854 Report post Posted January 8, 2014 Good luck.... you just need to be strong, because that other prick getting a free ride on your shoulder is sucking your life away. bellicose 9 Report post Posted January 8, 2014 what's on your wish list? Bout time you jumped back into an e34 innit?! Haha, the only way i'd get back into an E34 would be a 'vert or 2 door version. And since neither were ever made then.............................................................hmmmmm, hang on, just thought of something to keep my hands and mind busy when i'm out in the shed......................................anyone got an old E34 sitting around. Good luck.... you just need to be strong, because that other prick getting a free ride on your shoulder is sucking your life away. It hit home the other day helping someone move house. If i can't carry the end of a couch 5 metres without being out of breath afterwards then it's time i stopped kidding myself. qube 3570 Report post Posted January 8, 2014 ^i think it is a sign! At least give it a go, you will never know if u dont make a start now is the perfect chance to take that first step. For me i got really sick that forced me to stop for a week or so then it was a matter of taking steps forward one at a time. I did take a few steps back but still kept going and its going pretty good so far.
JaseNZ 53 Report post Posted January 8, 2014 We have moved out and our place is currently being renovated and I tell you what the color on the walls and ceiling from the smoke (from when we smoked) is out of control. The build up of tar is staggering and enough to make you heave when cleaning everything. This is a build up from 8 years that you have to see to believe. Best thing we ever did 2 years ago was to kick the habit. Give it a go you have nothing to loose and everything to gain.

I saw all this when we sold the old house. 20yrs of smoking. The ciggy stains on walls when you moved pictures, curtains and fittings were incredible. Never smoked in our new house though which is 9 years old now.... 3yrs & 4 months for me now
JaseNZ 53 Report post Posted January 8, 2014 No i didn't take any photo's and everything has been cleaned and ripped down now. To be honest I was going to take some pictures when they were doing it all but I was to embarrassed. All the jib has been ripped out and all new kitchen is going in etc , there is a definite no smoking policy on our place now that's for sure. The heat pump unit on the wall was so bad I have replaced the whole heat pump and put a new one in.
jeffbebe 1559 Report post Posted January 8, 2014 My god. I almost wish I had been a smoker and had quit just to save that much money from not smoking. Instead I prob spent that much money on heaps of F all. I donated about that to the city of Vegas this year. I've been clean for coming up to 10 years. In theory I've saved about $40K, the reality is that I've just wasted my money on something else. If you've convinced yourself to quit because of the financial implications have a plan for the money because I f*cking didn't and I'm no better off financially than before. Health's another matter altogether though!
