Quality Oil on a Saturday?

Recommended Posts

Drained my oil and went to refill and realised I had been given the wrong oil from the ELF agent.. so im in need of a high quality full synthetic 10w50, preferably a competition oil.

Where to buy it on the weekend?

I normally buy it from ELF but they are closed on the weekend.

Thanks

Any quality oil will do Motul, Total, Royal Purple..

I wonder why Repco or Supercheap dont have the good oil?

Because there isnt the market for it. Most people are sweet with the standard castrol/valvoline/penrite/mobil etc.

I wouldnt necessarily say their oil is worse either, its just more mainstream. An expensive, hard to get oil, isnt necessarily good. Normally its just expensive, and hard to get.

There obviuoslly is a market as I need some for my race car and cant get any. I need a full synthetic oil and Repco etc dont offer one?

Also, ELF 10w50 is cheaper than Mobil 1 and a much better oil.

Supercheap sells a few different ones from memory, some in the Valvoline range etc. And just cos you need some doesnt mean there is a market for it. They arent gonna sell a product that only 10% of the population wants.

I don't think 10% of the population wants full synthetic 10w50 competition grade oil.. maybe .10%. The actual reason they don't stock the top quality oil is because the companies they buy off don't offer it in their range and they are more interested in flogging of what ever brand makes them 200% marked up profit.

Thanks for your help guys, I found some quality oil.

HKS 10w55 from Redline performance in Mt Wellington who are open Saturdays.. and it was cheaper than the generic brand stuff you mention above ;)

Shame Botany Motor Worx is not open saturdays, I know they stock quality ELF products as specified for quality european vehicles.

Best get back under the car

I was there at 7.00 this morning for half an hour... didn't think it appropriate to ring at that hour

Would not have been an issue. I was running my dog past your driveway at half six this-morning Glenn, that hill is a bastard but a good challenge.

Sorted now anyway but now have 20L of 5w30 that I cant use, I hope they will swap it

I use the Excellium 10w50, not sure of the LL code. I know they do a Competition range but cant find much information on it and the smug sales guy seemed to think it was silly expensive for how much I use. I normally just buy it in a 20L container and change it out every 5,000km or so.

I have wondered where you buy the top Castrol stuff and now I know, a 60 point is quite high, that must be the oil specific to the highly strung M engines.

The 10W60 is TWS designed solely for the Motorsport engines as you mentioned Graham, extremly expensive also, i'm glad i don't clock up that many Ks often.

No. But I always test out a new set of Semi Slicks and Clevdon has some great roads.

Is it actually the right oil for the engine? Manual says no - what does BMW say these days?

My best internets research suggests the e36 m3 needs a very good 10w40. My own experience is that the vanos is quieter and engages smoothly, with lower oil temps with a 10W40 compared to the TWS.

TWS appears to be for S54 (different rockers) and the S60?

TWS is recommended by BMW for ALL Motorsport engines, however the S50 engines were produced before TWS exsisted so was recommended another oil that we don't stock anymore as TWS has taken over its place. The Vanos filter gets replaced at every service too so i have no worries with that.

HKS = Mobil rebranded

One of the other tuner brands is Elf rebranded but I can't remember which one.

If you need Elf on a Sat you can always visit ADL Autoparts where I use to work. They are open till 12 and are a major Elf agent. Carry a bit of stock including 20ltr and 200ltr drums.

Easy indicator for the average joe to make sure he is getting the newest oil avalible look for the oils SJ/SL/SM rating. The current ELF range is SM. SN is on its way. Most stuff you find in your non specialised mechanics is SJ or if your lucky SL. This is not suited to anything past the late 90's.

The branding and viscoscity will not change by the year rating will. Really only have to worry if you are running a high end newer car though. Many new Euros will actually tell you if the grade is not good enough now.

Cheers Dan. Good info, you seem to be more clued up than the monkey that gave me the oil at ELF NZ. I get ELF from ELF NZ as they give it to me at cost seeing I have a race car with ELF on it.

Oh and HSK Superoil 10w55 is rebranded Idemitsu Kosan oil, so is BLTZ and other tuner brands, after filling my car with it I can feel it has at-least 20 more horspowers
