_Matt_ 42 Report post Posted June 13, 2013 (edited) Yes, I am still working on this project. However I discovered my E28 needs rust work and that takes priority over the engine rebuilt. A nice retired man is doing all the work in the next week or two for about half the price rustorations quoted but this is still about as much as it costs to rebuild an engine Anyway. Here is an update of what I have done - soda blasted and derusted the majority of things - painted most things - have a full list of what I need on pelican parts and have already ordered the things I need for the top and bottom end rebuild - just painted the block, timing covers, injectors... Ill change all the seals and gaskets on the block when things arrive and ill then put the head back together I also have another $800 worth of things to bring the car up to scratch. Hood lining, washer & coolant reservoir, hoses, nuts and bolts windscreen rubbers & chrome...I am also replacing all shifter parts and adding a Z3 shifter. I'm getting closer... and my boot lid is being exchanged for a rust free one tomorrow. It's cheaper to repaint a rust free lid. Michael. 2313 Report post Posted June 13, 2013 Nice work man! I like that you're paying attention to the smallest of details by the looks.
_Matt_ 42 Report post Posted June 14, 2013 (edited) picked up the donor boot lid from "Tanks for Everything" at least the donor 525i will have a fantastic death. some minor panel work needed + repaint. I had to leave my nice red one with the donor car so the tank had a complete car to crush :/ Edited July 6, 2013 by _Matt_
_Matt_ 42 Report post Posted July 6, 2013 A day of soda blasting and degreasing. Not to bad for a DIY job. The valves aren't perfect but they are a heck of a lot better than before. Before:

_Matt_ 42 Report post Posted July 13, 2013 (edited) What was keeping me from finishing my engine? This... All done now. Brent, the guy made this himself because he did it before I got a chance to let him know your package arrived :/ And my drivers seat mounts were buggered, as well as the handbrake. All solid now. Small dent job on the new (old) boot lid. Now to do some painting and get this bloody engine done. Edited July 13, 2013 by _Matt_

Nobimmer 694 Report post Posted August 23, 2013 Did you get them "badassed" at the same time?
_Matt_ 42 Report post Posted August 24, 2013 Did you get them "badassed" at the same time? I assume you mean re-profiled haha. I asked and he said they could but it would mean I'd have to modify other things too. I just took his word for it since he's the old man that restored engines for god knows how long. So everything is stock in the engine.
_Matt_ 42 Report post Posted September 2, 2013 Slowly but surely. Not as clean as some engines you see rebuilt but all the functional/ necessary jobs have been done. - cam re-grind - valves lapped - valve seals - 12 new rockers - rear oil seal gasket to be continued. _Matt_ 42 Report post Posted September 8, 2013 Just a few more updates... I'm doing as much as I can while waiting for another pelican order. New crank seal: New oil pan gasket, cleaned up the level sensor and installed, cleaned and installed oil filter housing with new gasket Did everything in my power to clean the intake manifold. Soda blasted + degreased + sanded + water blasted, all that was left was those spots which I believe is just oxidization. Wrinkle black manifold and rocker cover: I should have something that resembles an engine in the next week or two.
charles28 136 Report post Posted September 8, 2013 Nice work, I'm a fan of the ole E28's imo a lot cooler then the E34 shape. I like the torque from the M30 engine also, cool car

_Matt_ 42 Report post Posted September 8, 2013 Where are you getting the soda blasting done or is it diy? Sand blaster gun filled with baking soda from pack'n'save Not as efficient as some make out but it's good to save time and get into hard to reach places. Michael. 2313 Report post Posted September 9, 2013 Alloy oxidation is a really annoying on older engines, seems paint is the only remedy. Looking very good anyhow!
