E39 Touring to Ute Project

Recommended Posts

Just ordered this yummy set up, www.advancedkeys.com/prod_ak105B.html which mimics the set up from the F30 / F80 etc

So will get that wired up when she gets back from paint

How do you get on with EWS and the steering lock ?

Not sure yet, will have to have a look as I install it. From the user manual, this will bypass the EWS, but I will have to research the steering lock. Might look at removing it completely when I take out the ignition barrel.

Security on the advanced key unit seems pretty good, but I have another 'secret' security step that won't allow the engine or electrics to be started in case of theft. But let's hope we don't get any sneaky thieving thiefs

Thought I'd start on the rear cabin wall trim. Took some trimming, but got the shape done. Now to just style it up a little.

Finished the right rear guard off today. Hoping to finish off the rear sail tomorrow and then start on the front doors next week, ready for paint in 2 weeks

Yea, not sure 12" would fit :)

On another note, spent yesterday and today stripping down the donor engine. It has seen better days, a lot of gunk and grime

Ooooo that's a dirty girl...

Haha yea, filthy slag actually. Engine is full of gunk, but will be all new and clean soon

Haha yea I saw this in Perth 2 years ago and always wanted to do it. But obviously my fabrication skills and budget don't compare. But hopefully it comes out okay.

2 hours and 3 plastic files later. Dropping them off to be sandblasted tomorrow, engine components being acid dipped this week by mate that works in the air New Zealand planes :)

Watch out when you sand blast them, if they are the same as m50 ones they are made from muck metal and fall apart.

I think they might be the same, I spoke to the blaster this morning and he also said he has had some rocker covers crack under blasting, so im going to go soak them in heavy duty degreaser for a few days and then water blast at home.

Yeah that's what I ended up doing too after the first two fell to pieces. Petrol works well!

Haha unfortunately, I am the residential dish washer and the boss is my 6 year old son.

But I did land up using a heavy duty scrubber, degreaser and water blaster, cleaned them covers up good. Just need to sand down the flaky paint so I can get it coated. probably in a sand stone texture and gun metal grey

My yummy push start security system arrived today. A few wires that will need to be connected.

haha thanks man. Yes its coming along nicely now with having afternoons off to do some fabrication. And its always great motivation having positive feedback from fellow forum members, because sometimes it can seem that weeks go by and there hasn't been much progress, so the motivation is good :)

Decided to coat the covers myself. Went with 600 degree primer, sand stone grey and flat black engine paint. Waiting for the sand stone to dry, then will do a final coat or two of flat black.
