E39 Touring to Ute Project

Recommended Posts

The sensor pad is in the base of the passengers seat under the cover and on top of the foam. Have been told the wire connections and the wire can brake over time and abuse don't know if true. Have a write up on the seat convertion and saved as a word file but don't know how to get it on here if you are interested.

S62 running a reworked M62 auto box. The lads from Jerry Clapton say they can tune the auto box for .8-1.2 second gear changes if not more. But will need to get it rebuilt pretty solid first. Well that's the plan don't know if the S54 box will fit the s62.

Thanks for that. I managed to get it out and it seems to be okay. Ran a 3v @2ohm signal through it, came out at 2.9v @2ohm - now to figure out how to install it. Wonder if a can cut it to fit

Havent worked on the car much this month due to family holiday and shifting house etc, but on a better not...she now has her own garage. Got screwed over by a few tow companies so decided to take a chance and drive her from the old place to the new place, only 1.2km away but was a little nerve wrecking as the rear suspension only has the shocks now and no rear window. She drove pretty well other then that.

Looks all snug now. Will start getting some serious wrench time in over the next few weeks

Still waiting for the Lowe to be turned on in the garage, so not much progress apart from getting the old front bumper off and installing the M5 with the awesome front lip from David.

Completed the adjustable rear setup which I hope to get installed tomorrow.

Also picked up my awesome pipe bender to finish off fabrication for the rear window and A pillar.

Not much of an update, but finally sorted out power to the garage and began on the A pillars for the rear window. Just waiting for the sign off from the Cert guy so I can finish off the window. also started welding in the rear doors, that's such a massive task.

BUUUUT in other news, just picked up the donor car for the Ute.... 1998 540i. Mechanically she is good, cosmetically, not so much but definitely worth the price I paid..

Nice wheels on the 540i.

Are you going to put them on the ute?

installed the new Avin All-in-One head unit. Wired it up through the SMG steering wheel, iBus and the cars ECU system for on screen diagnostics and minor tweaks. Also got a Vodafone 3G SIM card installed for internet access and installed the latest NZ GPS maps. This also integrates into the PDC with reverse camera.

Spent the last week and a bit getting the rear window and pillar frames bent and welded in, which has been approved by the cert guys (pretty happy about that). But getting the perfect cut for the window panel was a mission on its own. Deleted the rear door handles too, so will soft grind the welds back this week and start smoothening out the sides to have the factory flow from front to rear.

Managed to cut out all remaining panels so I can begin to get these welded in.

Have also completed all the cars wiring relocation and tailgate connections. Only error being thrown up now is the airbag light which I will get taken car of when car is put back together.

Finished up the old battery well delete, took a few hours to cut the right angle and bends etc. Also did some tidy up on them messy cables, but camera died before getting a photo.

I will begin getting the flooring put in place now as the adjustable springs have also been fully installed in the rear. Will be looking for some adjustable shocks to fit soon, or perhaps just get some standard ones shortened.

Completed all the wiring and everything is working as it should. No error messages, all lights working.

Also got the deck floor 90% complete, need to pop rivet the right side in and then fabricate the inner trays. Will be using the Hibbo Deck Liner stuff to line the deck this weekend.

Thanks man. If I had the rear window, I might have driven it to the meet on Sunday haha but hopefully it will be on the street within the next month depending if I go wide body or not

Haha yea, its only cos the mrs has been occupied by xmas shopping and catching up with friends before everyone heads away for the holidays. That, and have the patients to cut everything really slow to get it to fit near perfect. hopefully the finished product is worthy of the time and effort :)

Right, now comes the nansy details parts. Started masking off everything in the rear / deck. Started sanding back all the surface rust and clear coat and over spray and rubber and welds and this and that. Hoping to get the entire deck incl tyre arches and rear window panel, all smoothened out and ready for deck lining and some paint this weekend.
