francoisv 466 Report post Posted August 17, 2014 Got the car started yesterday, glad nothing has blown up and she sounds pretty good, too bad the 6'a will be gone soon. Then began the fabrication on the tailgate, but there is a substantial amount of rust, so will be cleaning that up Also Got the cabin walls finished today, will weld them in this week and begin the rear window. Fabrication shop said the tray walls should be ready this week too. On another not I cleaned up the reverse sensor wiring and tow bar wiring that I forgot about. francoisv 466 Report post Posted August 19, 2014 Picked up 3 of the 6 rear tray panels today. Bends are perfect. Will get them fitted today and prepped for trimming to fit the outer rear quarters and doors.
francoisv 466 Report post Posted August 21, 2014 So, test-fitted the panels yesterday. They fit pretty well. So will spend the next few days trimming the over laps. Also managed to get the cabin walls in and pop riveted, so hopefully with in the next week, we will have the entire tray wall done.
aja540i 1906 Report post Posted August 21, 2014 Have you had the certifier around to have a look yet? If not, it might pay to at least give him a call before you start covering anything in. I would hate to see you have to rip stuff out again so he can sign off something!! Looking good, keep it up!
M5V8 337 Report post Posted August 22, 2014 +1 Get friendly with the cert guy now. It helps later on.
francoisv 466 Report post Posted August 24, 2014 Yea, ive spoken to Mark Stokes and sent him quite a few detailed emails. He is handing this over to Lance as Lance has more time, so hoping he can pop around over the next 2 weeks to do a spot check
francoisv 466 Report post Posted August 26, 2014 Think I might start the fabrication of the tray floor tomorrow
francoisv 466 Report post Posted August 27, 2014 Just had a pretty positive call from Lance "the cert guy" - who will be coming around on Monday next week to have a looksee. As I am not modifying any security to the front compartment and there will be no passengers in the rear "cough cough" , he recons it will just be down to a few items on his list to look for. So fingers crossed
francoisv 466 Report post Posted August 28, 2014 Well they aren't the recaro sportsters cs, but they will do for now... And since it's going to be raining for the next week, time to start stripping down the standard seats to mount these buckets and getting them mounted to the standard frame
francoisv 466 Report post Posted August 28, 2014 So that only took half hour to strip down...
aja540i 1906 Report post Posted August 28, 2014 What are you doing with the guts of the original seats? I am keen to get hold of the air pump for the lumber support if you dont need it. Cheers.
francoisv 466 Report post Posted August 28, 2014 Sweet, I'll get the air pump out for you tomorrow. I'm keeping the frame of the seats, but the foam pads and rear plastic trim with fold out thingy I'll probably land up giving or throwing away. If I can get the heated seat pads out of the leather, I'll use those too, if I can't I'll do the same with them as I will with the foam. Won't be using the head rests either
zero 1162 Report post Posted August 28, 2014 If you can reuse the heated seat pads, then I recommend it. Heated seats are awesome
francoisv 466 Report post Posted August 28, 2014 Yes this is true, however, the heated pads are stitched directly to the leather covers, might have to get my sewing kit out
francoisv 466 Report post Posted August 29, 2014 Just bought one of these with matching gear knob and panels. Will be selling my M spec wheel next week...

francoisv 466 Report post Posted August 29, 2014 4 hours to retro fit the bottom of the aftermarket seat. Looks pretty good so far. Had a moment where I was kinda hoping it would be a straight bolt on, but nah..
francoisv 466 Report post Posted August 31, 2014 After 14 hours, give or take, finally got the drivers chair done

As you no doubt have found the seats come apart with out to much trouble just go easy with the sensor pad in the passengers one these are pron to giving trouble if ill treated and not cheap to replace. francoisv 466 Report post Posted August 31, 2014 Fantastic news! Lance from lvvt has come and approved all the work to date. So time to start getting all the panels welded into place. What they are or will be most concerned about, is the rear window frame to the B pillar and welds for the doors to be closed, so the next time he comes around, hopefully will be to cert the ute

francoisv 466 Report post Posted September 3, 2014 (edited) Since we have some panels currently being blasted and coated to finish off the tray, I though I'd do some of the random mini jobs. Made a nice hole for the twin muffler set up.. Started on the wiring for the SMG conversion.. The blue wires are for shifting up and down, the white is for engaging sports mode (when both paddles are pulled at the same time) Made this harness that will plug directly into the factory unit Then managed to start pop riveting the tray walls in for welding tomorrow. Also got some expanding foam in all the nooks and crannies behind the cabin wall so we don't have any air leaks in the cabin. francoisv 466 Report post Posted September 5, 2014 Finished off the wiring for the SMG from the E46 to the E39 loom. Tested all the button out put signals, all working. So hopefully I can get this fully installed tomorrow
