Decided to give the interior a bit of a spruce up and make it a better place to be.

The driver seat has some typical bolster wear and the leather was looking a little shiny in areas. Using a 10:1 mix of meguiars all purpose cleaner, a bore hair brush and half a dozen microfibre towels, the seats and leather surfaces are much cleaner. Not a fan of leather conditioner so I only applied it to areas exposed to UV rays and wear and tear i.e inner door handles and seat bolsters.

After a few hours of vacuming leather cleaning and further detailing :

Finished of with a thorough cleaning of the steering wheel. Amazing how much grime accumulates. Used the same cleaning process as for the leather in the rest of the interior :

Today marks 100 years of the BMW AG.

In prep for the 100 year anniversary drive with the BMW ccnz I spent about 350 minutes cleaning the M5.

First clay bar and wax since the ocd treatment last November.

The rattling sound, under medium throttle in higher gears at lower revs produced a rattling type sound for many of the S54 owners, and I could only find 2 concrete examples of other s62 engines with the same symptoms that turned out to be the result of HG failure between the cylinders. I was lucky enough to find a sound clip of the rattling sound from one of the S62's with HG failure. I've added this as a play list with my sound clip to compare the sound, and it was quite the same.

Finally fixed the engine rattle. A lifter was either dry or getting blocked under certain conditions i.e high engine load. On cold start it would occasionally chatter for a couple of seconds. 

 

It seems two oil and filter changes in 12,000kms has cured it. No more rattle or cold start lifter tick. Now to fix low speed brake squeal

Sorting out the rear door vapour barriers (VB’s).

They started leaking about 3 years ago, but not bad enough to soak the carpet thankfully. Back then i decided to use some butyl mastic in a caulking gun which turned out to be a temporary fix.
 

 

This attempt I’ve decided to go with the official bmw procedure using new VB’s as the old ones I couldn’t bear cleaning off old butyl. Below is a description of the procedure.
 

So starting with removing the old VB I then heated up and scraped off as much butyl as possible from the inner door panel. Using a rag and some prepsol I managed to fully clean off all the old butyl followed by a wipe down of the contact area with isopropyl. 
 

Then apply fresh butyl tape to the VB leaving the wax paper on. Offer it up to the door panel. Peel the wax paper off as you press down until the VB is fully attached to the inner door panel. Heat up the perimeter of the door panel and use a seam roller to press down on the butyl for good adhesion.

Instructions say to let the butyl “set” for 5 hours before doing and load tests (i.e leak test, open/closing door). Fingers crossed this is a lasting repair.

Local i was quoted between 150 and 190 + gst depending on if they needed to be ordered ex Germany. FCP euro were $40usd ea so went with that. No gst to pay either.

A belated 21st present has been ordered for the M5. 

- Clutch kit and at the same time a shifter rebuild using some new bits I have had stored away.

-full suspension kit including shocks, all arms, ball joints, steering parts etc. Everything except subframe bushes and wheel bearings. diff bushes, diff seals, drive shaft cv, centre bearing and flex coupling were replaced in late 2018.

-valve cover seals, air filters, cabin filters and fuel filter. Oil change to be done at same time. Be a good opp to also fit 4 new CPS's i've had in storage too.

Planning to take it down to the end of the south island next year and will be looking forward to driving it on all the fresh parts.
