Tyres for Mrs M's Baur 325. (1990 E30 325.)

Been looking around and stock sizes - 195/65-14 - aren't as commonly available as they might have been a few years ago. I'll probably take a look at a Bridgestone offer but as we only need 2, that's not necessarily ideal either.

Thinking either Kumho KH27, or Hankook K415. $130-170 per tyre depending on source.

Any views either way?

Edit: Bridgestone are offering Ecopias at $161 fitted, but no special offer. Current 'Buy 1 get 1 half price' and similar deals are only for specific models of tyre.

Beaurepaires are offering buy 3, get 1 free, on the Goodyear Assurance TripleMax 2 at $150 per tyre, but plus $26.20 per rim for fitting.

Hyperdrive are offering 50% off with  discount code.

However, by the time you're finished with all the faffing about, there's little to choose between suppliers when it comes to the same model of tyre.

I went for Hankook K415's (196/65R14) over the Kumhos, based on price and reading endless reviews on-line.  They're better than I expected.  Not a sport-performance tyre, but a reasonable touring tyre.  The only time I've come anywhere near aquaplaning was on a thoroughly flooded road in torrential rain - RE003 would cut through - I should have been going 10kph slower.  They've reasonable feedback, aren't too mushy in the sidewalls yet are comfortable, and grip enough.

Looks like the Kumho KH27 has been superseded by the ES31 - you'd hope to get a great quit-stock deal in normal circumstances, though in our covid-world, there may be slow replenishment stocks with the global freight slowdown.

Beyond the Hankooks, in this size, I'd be looking to Michelin or Continental - probably the only reasonable premium options in this size, from memory?

Hope that helps, mate.

I've no issue with spending the extra for Michelins, etc, but finding them is a real problem at present.

I've run Hankooks on the W201 for ages. Very pleased with them.

I ran yokos 509s in 195/65/14 on my e30 323i years back. They are an old design but were the best of the many tires I had in the 270,000 kms  I drove it.

Hyper have Goodyear Assurance Triplemaxs in that size and on special - four for $490... you're not likely to find a better tyre/price combo in that size.

+$28 per tyre for the fitting, balancing, tyre valve and old tyre disposal. Which seemed expensive, so I checked around. (Hyperdrive assure me the valve and tyre disposal are free - no charge.)
Beaurepairs charge $10 for fitting, and another $15 for balancing, so there is some sort of agreement in pricing for that service.
Nocams charge $7.50 for fitting, $10 for balancing, and $2.50 for old tyre disposal.

I'm not sure I understand... did they tell you that you have to pay specifically for fitting? Their website claims not and I've never paid for them to fit or balance mine.... seems odd.

But regardless, sub $150 a corner for quality Goodyears is still excellent value (for NZ).

I was actually asking about disposal, which I didn't want to pay for - we have use for a few old tyres around the farm. It's "free".
The rest was just a 30 second comparison exercise for the costs of fitting, balancing and disposal.

Yup - pretty good price (for NZ. ? ). It's a sign of the times that 195/65-14s aren't readily available from many 'good' manufacturers - Toyo Proxes CF2 rose to the top of the shopping list, but none to be be easily found.

Is there a way, without flashing anything, to have my car default to DTC mode (rather than DSC mode) when I start it?

How do you switch modes usually (button)?

If it's a simple button press then you could emulate pressing the button using a relay that closes momentarily after a short delay.

Yep, one press on the button. Relay, hmm, not sure my electrical skills are that good... ? any idea of what type of relay I'd need? And I imagine it'll have more than 2 pins/posts so not a straight-forward inline install?

Looked up on Youtube - looks like a simple button press for a specific time.

It should be quite easy to add a small timer board with a relay output to emulate the normal press function of the button. We make a board for turning on TV's automatically for the bus industry which waits a programmable time then emulate pressing the on button for a programmable time. It work fine on 12V and could easily be used for your application. You need to find a 12V source that's active while running and take the 2 relay contact wire to the DTC button contacts.

Can you please sell that to Auckland Transport to install in all the busses they contract to turn the f'ing GPS on when the bus is started?!? Why TF it doesn't turn on automatically, and requires a driver to remember, is beyond me. When they forget to turn the GPS on the app and digital signs don't update and it's a real PITA.

Just checked, we're out of boards. I need to order some more and they only take about a week to arrive.

The PCB uses a CD40106 Hex Schmitt Inverter chip and simple R's & C's to create delays and sequence a pulse onto the relay coil. The relay contacts are isolated which make it universal to use. If you're interested I can make one up and send it to you. The parts cost is about $10...

It has 4 wires. Red is +12V, black is ground. The two White wires go to the relay contact. It makes it really simple to install. The hardest part will be finding the 12V supply and routing the wires behind the dashboard.

Unfortunately we don't do much for AT - too bureaucratic to deal with anyway.

There is a project in the pipeline for AT that might solve this problem anyway (if it goes ahead).

Definitely keen to cover your costs to try something out, no rush at all of course and I certainly don't want to be an imposition! I'm competent enough to find a 12v feed and earthing point! ?

Attach a lever to a long arm, thats hooked up to the seat, so when you sit down the lever pushes an arm that presses the button.

Or you could just press the button ?

I've come to accept, after many duh moments, that I'm never going to drill it into my startup routine. I'm also now interested out of shear interest! I think it would be quite cool for it to switch to DTC mode as I pulled out of my driveway... ?

Make: BMW

Model: 325i

Year: 2006

Chassis: E90

Ran a scan on my car today and Power Management code 002DED. My car has recently had a new battery installed to be exact 10/07/20 Century DIN 75ZLMF Battery. I was told to install a DIN 66. But mechanic said DIN 75 would be best. I knew my car never went to sleep as my centre DVD consoles lights still illuminate n make a funny noise only when engine is off. Sometimes it will turn off on some nights. As my iDrive Navigator Display is not working. Could this cause this code popping up?

DIN75 is generally longer and will have a greater capacity.  Maybe some extra CCA.  Did your mechanic code the new battery in, including type and capacity and date?

Sounds like your CCC could be dead and causing a current draw. It really needs to be diagnosed properly though. Maybe you should take it to a BMW specialist and ask them to diagnose it.

Yes I have known my CCC is dead and this is most likely the cause. I will take to bmw specialist. Another annoying thing is as the car being a Japanese Import from 2018. The owner then had installed a BMW Japan interface into the iDrive. I’ll attach some photos below of what I pulled out of what was in the fuse box compartment and in the boot.

That's ^ a digital terrestrial TV controller, see the links below. Unfortunately it looks like there's a lot more than just the box you pictured so unwinding it all back out of the vehicle might be a nightmare.

I’ve pulled out what I can. I’m not an auto electrician expert so I assume it’s best to get it professionally pulled out before I get my head unit changed into an aftermarket one. When installing an aftermarket Unit does the original CCC get pulled out or does the aftermarket need CCC to function?

If the car originally came with a screen and iDrive controller then you need to end up with both (even if both are replaced). You can't go from IDrive (regardless of CCC or CIC) to non-iDrive without a lot of coding and cabling. So your want to keep CCC working. You replacement HU should plug into the CCC (and probably optical) connections.

For the 130i boys and girls, is the stock rear swaybar blue? Mine is blue and that strikes me as a little odd for OEM.
