Time to update the concept touring with a major repower. Out with the S54 and in goes a S65 with M-DCT. Time for Quest fabrication to do their magic, especially with headers to be fabricated from scratch. First photos show the S65 and DCT in place. So far we have custom made engine mounts, gearbox mount and steering shaft.

Finally fixed the engine rattle. A lifter was either dry or getting blocked under certain conditions i.e high engine load. On cold start it would occasionally chatter for a couple of seconds. It seems two oil and filter changes in 12,000kms has cured it. No more rattle or cold start lifter tick. Now to fix low speed brake squeal

Hot water comes out of engine, and with any luck cool(er) water goes back in?

Decided to get the BC Gold adjustable suspension....don't ask me why ? Haha, but i'm sure this will be fine for the mean time. I would prefer some Bilsteins, or maybe Koni, but i'm going to trial these and see how they perform. There's no real negative feed back, and if anything...it's gotta be an upgrade over Monroe / or Boge suspension hahaha. Rather cool, must i say, nicely packaged, undamaged, even the drop links are supplied along with the usual bits and pieces. So i'm looking forward to installing these, but it'll be one of the last things i do on the car.

you will need an amplifier and as many analog inputs as you want thermocouples. unless the link will accept a can expander / thermocouple amplifier.

Ok answer this, what are you going to do with all this data and how are you going to make use of it ? I did a 80k twin turbo big block the other week, once tuned correctly we only monitor 02 readings per bank even then the owner has no idea what to do with the data. ( Cant hold his hand even time he uses it ) Just have it tuned right to start with using the intended fuel, there is no such thing as a "safe" tune however a tune is either right or wrong end of story. if you think you have time to watch a bunch of gauges when pedaling this thing then your streets ahead of anyone else i know, set within the ecu the limits and setup warning alarms for main parameters then drive the thing as intended. Monitoring EGT's per pot is a cool thing if you were after the absolute hp even then its questionable to whether its needed, plus EGT's chill off quickly once throttle is closed and slow to respond. Like i said tune it right to start with, no Knock and dont set it on the edge, go forth enjoy it as intended. I would cover the cooling thing but that seems to be covered above.

Do the touring e46 chassis suffer the same issues with spot welds popping and floor cracks as the coupes and sedans?

Depends how many analog inputs your ecu has. that aem controller outputs each afr signal as a 0-5v analog. so you'll need at least 6 analog inputs for that. and then for the thermocouples, if your ecu cannot take them directly (unlikely ) youll need an amplifier and another 6 analog inputs for the egts. Link g4 extreme has 11 analog inputs and im not sure if that's incl your tps, map, coolant and air temp sensors. if you incl oil pressure and temperature, fuel pressure etc you start eating up your analog inputs pretty quick.

Exciting. Pleased to see this is going ahead. This E46 chassis has become one of the most lucky chassis out there with the engines its been privileged to have under the hood!

Hey Crunchy, can u give a quick overview of what cooling you would recommend? I'm building a e46 with a m62b44 and would love some advice on the subject of cooling. Thanks mate

Do a google to understand how performance cooling systems work

Will be sticking with the E46 rack to cause as little disruption to the steering geometry as possible.

In what way? increasing power output will increase heat output, so generally a bigger radiator will be needed. though ive generally found bmw radiators to be quite big and good from the factory.

Yay, done, back on 19's too. Park2-1 by Christian Taylor, on Flickr

Picked up a New Radiator, Behr, from BMWorkshop in town, plus a Driveshaft Guibo / Donut? I'll just call it a "rubber thing"...gotta love my unorthodox car terminology ?. Could've went with other aftermarket options but this is ok for now.

Apologies on the delayed posts, been so busy with everyday life, so much that i barely made much progress. However....thanks to the helpful team at NZAD, Speedfactor, Bmworkshop and Redline Performance, i managed to source many parts for the build. Still have a few small things to tick off the list, but will hopefully achieve that this week or later. Acquired a Competition Clutch / lightened Flywheel setup from Speedfactor, they had an Extra lightweight Flywheel option, but wasn't sure how that would perform? But im sure this setup will do the job just fine ?

1996 or thereabouts. His commute is 1300km per week. It's disgusting, it gets an oil change every 8 weeks and basically light bulbs and wipers as needed... and that's it. Last cambelt went for 400,000km before he decided maybe it wanted a new one. I still refuse to own one.
