  12. "Rena took a shortcut" Environment Minister Nick Smith says the "Rena" hit Astrolabe reef because the Captain decided to take a short cut. Speaking today on TV3's "The Nation" Mr Smith said that the path that was navigated was one in which the ship was trying to get into port quickly. "Now that is rumour, I can't confirm that" he said. "But it appears from the charts that they were in a rush to get to port, went full bore, cut the corner, and hit the reef." Mr Smith defended the Government's response against charges that it was too little, too late. "There's pretty ill-informed comment about the complexity of these sorts of salvage operations, and the consistent message I've had is what has taken place here is world's best practice." Mr Smith was asked about a Maritime Industry New Zealand review of its oil pollution response capabilities in February this year. The report concluded there was little New Zealand would be able to do stop oil reaching the shore and that the New Zealand response would be what it called a "shoreline based response". "I think the fact is true, whether the oil spill is in New Zealand or in international waters, the options you have for the containment of the oil from vessels are pretty limited," said Mr Smith. "I've for instance been pretty critical that booms were not used, the truth is that booms don't work in those conditions." Mr Smith also denied claims made in the programme that the Government could have removed oil from the Rena if it had responded quicker. "In terms of the question about a vessel it would have made nought difference if you had on the Wednesday, hours after that the vessel hit that reef, it would have made no difference in terms of getting the oil off shore." The Nation is produced by Front Page Ltd for TV3 and NZ on Air.
  13. i read this a while ago been on my bookmark for when that day comes, i pay cash at the dealers for a new car : buying guide dunno if its applicable here or if the dealer will show it to you. i think they are probably adding ludacris costs on top, or they have an insane business model or just sky rocketing profit margins. "Does the customer have the right to ask to see the factory invoice for a new car or truck? You certainly have the right to ask to see the factory invoice, but it doesn't necessarily mean they have to show it to you. (FYI: The factory invoice is a statement from the vehicle's manufacturer which shows, among other valuable info, the dealer's wholesale cost for that vehicle.) With the car business becoming more and more competitive, however, it has become the norm for many dealers to show the factory invoice to their customers during the negotiations - if you ask. So be sure to request to see it when you are sitting at the desk buying your new car or truck. (Asking to see the invoice while on a test drive or on the sales lot is probably not going to do you any good. Wait until you are sitting at the desk.) And by the way, the invoice prices for all new vehicles are also available online at the very helpful"

  17. a reasonable person in charge or a person who aint scared of some beaurocrats would put in practicality over red tape IMO. i.e. put containment measures in place asap with or without beaurocratic approval, instead of waiting for the go ahead (i would if i was in charge). would assume there is minimal danger in putting one of those oil spill containment buoeys or nets they use around the ship to stop the spread as you wont be that close to the ship to be in any danger. common sense really. if there is a small fire in your kitchen ( oil in fry pan on fire for example) and you caught it while its still manageable, do you call 111 and wait for the fire fighters to give you a go ahead to try and use that fire extiguisher under your kitchen sink to put it out or wait for them to come when your whole house is burning down to the ground? its the same principle. do what you can to minimise consequences without putting yourself or other people in great danger.
  18. its quite amazing actually. how could a captain and his co captains and navigators, charts, maps and GPS or what ever they have in ships not know there was a reef there.. damn seriously... that company should be made to clean up the mess and pay compensation like BP did. really want to know what caused it to happen though.
  19. first of all try another network sim before trying dangerous stuff with it.

they are playing the squeeze as much out of the product game doing incremental upgrades and 'new' models. they are putting faith in their "brand" so to speak. even though they may have inferior products now, their brand image is second to none in the eyes of consumers. asked my friend who bought one recently why she bought one when she could have bought an android, she answered 'because its an apple and its cool noone uses android phones' go the android!

yeah its an addiction to some haha. more on the bragging rights and display of status for people than practicality. most people dont even use all the apps. my sis only uses it to text, make calls, take photos and the ocassional games thats it. good on apple!!
