Timing chain guide failure doesnt seem to affect the s62 as badly. GT1 diag testing - get the vanos tested, check for any other faults. Take it for a good test drive, get the car up on a hoist and poke around underneath it. Orr pay for a PPI if interested.

Black 540i E39 'Hearse' on tardeme. :-)
BreakMyWindow replied to Phil-540i's topic in TradeMe discussions
Perfect candidate to make an M5 touring out of. -
I was gonna say... 9.2l/100km urban sounds like you have a pixel missing on the obc ;-) I got from Nelson to Auckland on 1 and 3/4 of a tank. It would have been 1 and 1/2 I reckon but I got back to Auckland smack bang during peak hour traffic, so lots of stop/start driving all the way to Titirangi.

9.2l/100km.. That's not driving it right! :-P
-
Yep, they like a drink. Daily commute driving the best average i've seen is 14.1 litres/100km - that's with just mild driving in Auckland stop/start.

Stop and pull on to the grass perhaps..

Could have stopped to check if the egg was unhurt at least!

Hand-built engine lottery. But probably a lot to do with how the Engines were run-in for the first 2000kms.
-
Check for surging on part throttle cruising. And definately get a PPI.

The 'Control, preseries' is an interesting option, perhaps a special test vehicle, or pre-production car??
-
It's considered normal for pre-2000 models. In 'Murica there are examples of mega mileage M5's - 200k + miles. Here's some specs on this one for any one interesed. Looks to have some individual data, however protected.

Black spray paint removed from the trims, ipod intergration kit installed, and gave the rest of the interior a bit of TLC :

Good on ya Glenn. Although I found it odd being able to smoke my cigarette in Glenn's office just a few months back! I gave up last Sunday morning at 2am. Day 5 and just the rest of my life to go!

http://www.ebay.com/itm/331006392248?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1423.l2649 Some one convert their e39 touring in to an M5 touring! :-)

Glenn did my gearbox oil, we used the factory grade ELF equivalent. It made shifting better when warm, but no difference to cold. I did notice though that after giving the M5 a good thrash, getting the gbox temp right up, the shifting becomes butter smooth, so it seems as if it's a combination of oil flow, and oil viscosity that changes the shifting behaviour in this box.

Don't forget The valley pan. That's a nice place for coolant leaks to start from.

Based on my reading from the USA M5board forum, cold 1-2 shift issues is normal, but more predominant on the pre facelift models. Some have had success with running thinner oils. I just skip 3rd until about 2mins of driving and then 2nd is willing. Previous owner of my m5 ran it on 95 as there wasn't 98 available any where close to Nelson, and to me it still felt quick on the test drive. Running on nothing but 98 now, but I don't know if BPultimate 98 is actually 98RON...

Ahh the petrol station... The M5's natural habitat. If you're brave you can repair the pixel issue, there are a few how-to's floating about on the net. Otherwise i'd recommend one of our used parts suppliers to supply you with a replacement unit. How are you finding shifting when the car is cold with the short shift kit? I have the same short shift kit, and shifting from 1 - 2 when cold is near on impossible. Even after replacing fluid with what the factory recommended.

Another one joins the circle. Well done. Much needs doing?
-
good work! Congrats on the purchase.
-
To who ever is looking, would definately recommend getting it hooked up to a GT1 system or similar and checking everything over.
