  1. Honestly thought it was a Fiat on first glance
  2. Thread dig....... I'm in the middle of transplanting a 188mm LS centre into my 3.15 open at the moment. My research so far indicates that as long as I'm using the same side cover shims in the same place they came out of, lash will remain the same? I'll be stopping in to buy some contact paste tomorrow to confirm proper mesh between the crown & pinion but I'd rather bounce it off people that have done this before. Input shaft bearings are in great condition, and the oil that came out of the case was clear. Whomever owned the car before it became a pile of parts obviously looked after it! Ta muchly!
  3. Any chance you'd sell on the stock knob?

    A Familiar Face

What's the story with the intake manifold? Looks tits!
  5. Added Bilstein & eibach goodness Started the LSD pumpkin swap, so far so good! Anyone have any tips with regards to setting backlash and pinion to crown preload?
  6. Took me about 30 min to remove liner and residual foam. Once it starts drooping it almost removes itself. Just wish I'd made a better choice with the fabric

Yes I use stands. As mentioned earlier, I'm an amateur, not suicidal. I own four of them, my only issue is not getting enough clearance with my current jack to gain a suitable working height under the 3er. With my increasing girth I need more room than I used to in years gone by. Perhaps my brand of humour is a little more obscure that I thought. Didn't mean to cause any alarm. 18mm is a pain to find, but without one I can't get the front struts out. Yay for odd Germans! @Miles; Sounds good mate, let me know how you go with the jacks too

I'll concede to being an amateur. Not suicidal though. More that my little jack is just nearly impossible to use, and I have an abstract sense of humour. Most people think it's autism, but whatever. Will keep hunting about on tardme then. Maybe one day a decent set will pop up that some other bugger doesn't beat me to first!

Good to know man, have seen a lot of Teng gear around lately but don't know anyone that has abused it. Would be stoked if I could get my mitts on Sidchrome as well, but Jezus they go for a lot secondhand! Also hard to find sets that include an 18mm If anyone knows of / has a good low profile workshop jack for sale that'd be handy too. Sick of not getting enough clearance / nearly being killed by my $80 Ripco special. Working on cars is fun, ust not when they threaten to fall on you!
  10. +1 Or own one and never get around to setting it up in the new house

    SP Tools

Looking for recommendations for a set of metric spanners. Have seen SP Tools around for what seem to be reasonable prices, has anyone owned / used these before? Would love to go to Stahlwille or similar but I don't really have the coin to splash out 1k on spanners for what is after all only a home workshop. Any advice welcome!
  12. I'm assuming you're referring to the E36 318 box? If so, it's the same Getrag box as the 325i. Admittedly not as strong as the ZF but apparently still good for up to 300hp, according to threads I've seen elsewheres I imagine these days the prices of manual E30 325s will have a lot to do with 318s being the base of choice. Most of the B25s I've seen would be criminal to tear apart and rebuild, especially the Ms. Probably not much help, but my 2c worth
  13. Mmmm, at 100k miles $8500 seems a bit high. Maybe $6500 - $7000? Then again, I'm certainly no expert. How are the E46 wagons for space? I'd like to ditch the mrs VW Passat wagon for a BM but am unsure if the 3er will be large enough to accommodate the baby + assorted paraphenalia, the dog, the wife and my fat ass. Still, looks like a tidy example Not dumped on ridiculously oversize chrome rims and with 35 subs in the boot!
  14. Good to know! I used a AB class so hopefully no issues. On the bright side, the auto sparky gave the battery a clean bill of health, much to my surprise! All's well that ends well. Hopefully next time I post on this thread it'll be better news
  15. Rest assured, all my wiring is fused! Way too risky otherwise!! Unfortunately for me it was the 300mm of 4 gauge between the + post and the fuse that became trapped, thereby creating the short before the fuse Besides an extraordinary amount of powder to clean up the car is virtually unharmed. Would like to verify battery safety before I put it back on the road though. Any suggestions with regard to testing?
  16. Got REALLY lucky! Sub amp cable broke free of tie to underside of chassis rail, moved around and became trapped between chassis rail and battery. Shorted out and arced back to body while taking the 325i out for it's first run with the new Bilsteins installed in place of leaky crappy stock shocks. Made it less than 80 meters from home before I heard the arcing. Was fortunate enough to have a random stranger pull over and dump water on the fire, gave me long enough to sprint home & grab the powder extinguisher I keep in the garage. Only casualty seems to be some fried amp cabling and a little soot staining in the boot. Only damage i can see to the battery is a tiny bit of melt on one corner. Is there any way I can test how safe the battery is with my trusty Fluke multimeter before I risk putting it back in the car? It's still holding steady at 12.11V while on the workbench, not keen on risking it setting itself alight while I've got my baby boy in the car. The battery was fairly warm when removed from the boot after all the fuss had died down. Or am I better to take it to an auto sparks? Or just replace it and not bother with getting it tested? http://imageshack.us/a/img844/6671/qq7x.jpg http://imageshack.us/a/img580/8663/ubay.jpg http://imageshack.us/a/img819/9766/mli3.jpg Will be reinstalling amps again soon, this time using armoured conduit for all power cabling. Not letting this happen again!! Aplologies for the pic links, have no idea how to upload photos now we can't send them straight to the forum
  17. Proves anything can be done with a grinder & arc welder in the shed. Just doesn't always mean it should be done
  18. Most cars I've seen tend to drop to 2-3k asking once they've gone over 300km, regardless of age. 15 seems pretty steep for a motor that will likely cost you a lot more in maintenance than purchase price. Company cars are only maintained to the bare minimum in this country. Avoid.
  19. Have to ask the question as to why Telecom are only supplying cat 5e from the fibre converter / vdsl box inside client premises. 5e only supports 100 mb/s over 90m max, as opposed to cat 6 which will push 1GB/s over 90m. With a price point of less than about $1 per metre max difference it's difficult to understand why. Sooner rather than later there will be a domestic fibre product capable of pushing 250 mb/s, and it will incur yet another cost to the end user for cable upgrades. Typical Kiwi shortsightedness when it comes to infrastructure spending Yet another reason why central government should never have gotten involved in this!
  20. Oooh, that LSD is tempting!! Can you PM me your number please?
  21. The father in law has his Jag insured as a classic. They don't audit your mileage but they are known to investigate LTSA WoF records if they suspect the policy holder is having a larf at their expense Have heard good things about the company in question though.
