This is one of those "you certainly should" situations. There is nothing to stop you replacing the bushes in you (drum brake) rear arms, replacing hoses, stripping and rebuilding the entire brake assembly, and so on. That's just maintenance. And E36s were certainly factory-fitted with rear disc brakes. Did BMW make any other modifications to the brake system - master cylinder, for example - between drums and discs? Check RealOEM, BMWfans, or whatever your favoured online parts catalogue is. I'd postulate that anyone capable of correctly rebuilding a brake system (which is something you can do at home and does not require certification) could capably replace drums with discs. Of course, the cert process is designed to confirm that capability, and the safety of the installation.

I'd love one. But $150k? ?

I saw Arrows website... "Arrow Wheels are the only custom made Mag Wheels manufactured in New Zealand," apparently. I wonder what Halliday, now 41 Degree, would have to say about that? Definitely worth speaking to. Had thought about importing, but the 30-bolt construction, 4x100 drilling, hub centre size required and specific offset makes it difficult (so far - impossible) to find anything. Plenty of 4x100 high-et (40+) available, but nothing in a 15-20.

Fly down, drive back is the go.

I have a small pile of components for 3-piece Work rims from Japan. All parts are for 30 securing bolts. The centres are cast (forged?) but are drilled 5x112 - Mercedes fit. I'd like to sort some 4x100 centres. Work (apparently) don't supply individual rim components... I was recently told this by the NZ Work disti - it was news to me, as a conversation I had with them (albeit a different person) a couple of years ago suggested they did. Certainly for the purposes of repairs, and so on. Anyway... Anyone know where I can get a set of centres made up? I was thinking somewhere like 41 Degree Wheels - any other suggestions?

I empathise. It keeps internet relationships interesting.

I'll do a separate thread for them.

It's a sad, but eminently practical decision.

Roald Dahl, Mr Bean, Messrs Monty Python or NTNON, Grumbleweeds, Wurzels, or even just Kenneth Williams.

Sorry - I feel this is worth reinstating. This is $5000 - $7000 in insurance. Sounds ridiculous? No-one in the UK ever admitted it was even the remotest possibility until it happened. Oh, but it'll be the law... Hah! As if that'll stop anyone faced with a $5k+ bill for insurance. More burned-out shells on the side of the road.. "Musta bin nicked, off sir... I wuz off me face, innit? Woodn drive like that, wood I???" (Yes - this post fueled by animosity towards uninsured, off-their-faces drivers [in their 20s] who couldn't care less about young families driving carefully...)

Damnit. Anyone interested in a monumentally reliable 318i manual?

Only option is to not use Euro-style plates. NZTA decree what we can use and where we buy from. Official source, or they are illegal. (And tes - the supplier is Australian. ???)

Naah... Fun is when the drivers door is deadlocked, and won't open from the inside or outside and you have to dismantle the whole thing from inside the car!
