Was test driving a 120d yesterday and it'll go down as my most eventful test drive to date... Hot oil smell whilst driving Low oil light flashed on for a second (flat ground) but quickly turned off After a some twisty uphill driving I pulled over and into a cloud of smoke coming from under the bonnet (burning oil smoke) "Lots of short trips to the shops" Thoughts on what it could be? I know the sensible option is to run a mile, but what are people's thoughts on the cause of the smoke? It was coming from the exhaust side of the engine. Turbo? Carbon build up causing excessive crank case pressure and forcing oil out Gasket failure(s)

If you know what it looks like I may have one stashed away. (Have various used ones)

Is the steering wheel multi function and what colour is the headliner?
-
Manual conversion, BBS RCs and then track it?

@Jono51?

2013 F32 428i coupe & 2015 435i msport parts car or fix it up

I’m surprised no one else has mentioned this, but nice wheels on your trailer! -
@Allanw if it's anything like project Binky I'm sure I'll enjoy it. Would people be interested in a project thread?

My scooter was stolen so I'm looking at buying a BMW.
eliongater replied to AndrewH's topic in General Discussion
Why not buy another scooter? You can get electric ones with cruise control etc now http://www.niuscooters.co.nz/ -
@Herbmiester I believe the very first post is kept up to date with the wheels, pictures and prices.

Something happened...
-
?
-
Yes, that would be amazing, but not cost effective (even though I’ve got some BBS’). Don’t make me reconsider as it’s on the trailer to be scrapped ?
-
@Contrails maybe, I do need quite a few of the bits.

SOLD! E61 535d M-Sport, NZ New, 2006. Need it gone!!!

@Olaf, here's a better E61 -
I’ve made the decision that since there’s more rust than structurally sound metal and the fact it’s not straight it’s time for it to go. Unless anyone wants some rust with a free shell?
-
In case you still weren’t convinced about how bad it is. I present a previous 120 grade repair job...

@BM WORLD would the body looms be the same between the 525e (85 early steering wheel spline, no abs, manual everything, no obc) and the M535i (86 late spline from memory, abs, electric windows and sunroof, obc, check control, possibly alarm, might be aftermarket). @gjm I’ll give them a call. Not so keen on the 525e as a daily (read when I need a car for car things not just driving cause I want to) as it’s a lot of work to make it less temperamental around town, no AC, manual windows and no cup holder ?
-
The value of the finished product is only relevant if I’m selling it . My M535i wouldn’t be original or matching numbers anyway. Different engine, manual instead of auto, repainted (maybe in a different colour). Nobody else seemed keen on fixing mine either, so not sure what convinced me that I needed to be a martyr. I’m not aware of any good panel beaters that’d be willing to do that, happy to be enlightened though. On top of that I do need to have a useable car and save for somewhere to put said car(s). Buying the red one is all well and good, but it doesn’t deal with my current E28(s).
-
@qazwsx it still has the original bilsteins, but not the springs. Not that that matters too much, they’ll probably be due a rebuild. The only real difference (apart from the name) between an M535i and a 535i is the body is different to accept the body kit (easy to replicate), the body kit, probably the large case LSD and the //M seats. The rest is just normal 535i but with more options (such as sports suspension, moonroof, headlight washers)
-
Even if it costs at least $10k? Probably more?
-
Oh and I need to have the M535i out of the shed by next Friday, be that to a panel beater, scrap or whatever
-
Would anyone be interested in the bare shell? Assuming I decide to go down that path. (*cough* Live rego *cough*). Rather than me just scrapping it.
-
@gjm in a perfect world I'd fix it and drive it. However that's not looking 100% feasible, hence looking at using the 525e as a base.
-
@BM WORLD perhaps, but excluding the body I've already got the other parts and since that one is original I'd feel obliged to keep it that way (as opposed to mine where it's far from it). @Gabe79 Luckily it's still on hold so doesn't need certification or compliance. Based on the pictures and description, would he be able to come up with a rough ball park figure? I'm guessing it's more than is sensible to spend though. @gjm I'm not entirely sure at this point. In theory I would've used the E46... I've already built up a sizeable spares and knowledge pool around E28s, so it would be a shame to waste it by moving to a completely different model. @qube I'm in the fortunate position of not actually needing a daily. I either use a company car or public transport. @Mr Vapour I think you might be right. I just really don't want to pull apart a perfectly fine 525e. Though where else am I going to find a registered relatively rust free E28 for the price I paid for the 525e.
