My key spun around and around in the barrel, is that not what you mean?

Yip for one of the keys. It would usually catch if I kept trying. Now that I've drilled it, it wont work at all ?. Only the valet key works. Wonder if BMW still has access to spares if I give them the vin.

So, both alternative keys engage with the lock and turn the barrel but the main key does not?

And the spare key won't start the car?

Try holding the (edit: head of the) main key up to the ignition whilst attempting to start the car with the spare (not valet) key.

Yip that's right. Main key just keeps turning. Other key engages but won't start.

Yea I've tried that hoping the good chip key would be able to get close enough. No cigar.

  3. Murphy's law. Have a couple people coming to view the E36 tomorrow and the keys are playing up on me. One key just spins in the tumbler. After googling the forums people were saying the lock pin breaks off and to secure with a grub screw. Tried another key, it "engages" and clicks into "ON" but no crank. The valet key works fine. Anyone have any experience with this? My guess is the chip in the key that won't crank is shot and the key that spins is worn? I do have an EWS deleted DME I could try but won't to sort the problem properly.

    Car is a 1995 E36 328i EWSII.

I know. Very slow to respond too which makes it hard to get any information. He said he has "strong interest" but as we all know, interest doesn't mean alot. Surely if you had someone willing to put down a deposit, that shows they'll actually buy the car?

I see there's a tired looking E38 in Welly.. Maybe that can fill my project bug. Or Brent's E36 touring if it gets cheaper ?

Thanks for the suggestions and advice @All - what capacity for a medium sized car, is ~600mls enough or better to go with 1l? I don't fancy a refill mid foam.

My one is 1L and there's usually 1/3 left in there. Definitely doesn't need a refill. The karcher one that came with my K5 was small and didn't get a good thick coat. If you're not in a rush, I'd go for the Ali one. Can't fault it.

On second thoughts it might be best to go local in these times. Oty

  6. I bought an el cheapo off AliExpress a few years ago, similar to this. Its held up fine and once you "tune" it to the right settings you can get that real thick layer of foam. I use it with Chemical Guys Mr. Pink. only down fall would be that with it attached to my karcher, the way they have the thread means the bottle is cocked off 30 degrees from vertical (kind of hard to explain).

  7. Another small update, but mostly some pictures. I forgot to mention on the previous Meremere post that I fitted an E21 Kamei spoiler. Fits quite well and is adhered using the 3M automotive tape. It's different and very '80s/'90s, I'm a fan.

You'll also spot I fitted an OE towbar. I had it tucked away for awhile and never really intended on fitting it. I would preferably have a towbar on the E91 or E36 (did find a westfalia electric retractable for the wagon but it's bloody 50mm ?‍♂️).

The old battler has been an absolute life saver with the house & garden projects we've been doing. The catch is though, house stuff being done = car stuff paused once again. There's still a HEAP of wee projects I'd like to do on the E30. Cooling system upgrade, oil/water px and temps. But for know I'm loving just driving it around.

You need NCS Expert and a k+dcan cable, then you have to change the Vehicle Order to include  644. It's pretty easy to do once you know how to use it. It's also useful for coding other features into your car as well. You can download NCS Expert for free. It's part of the BMW Standard Tools. Here's the link.

    Awesome! Thanks for that.

  9. Hi everyone, bit of a tricky one..

I recently bought an electric swivelling towbar for our E91. I'm OK with wiring the lighting loom with the module to not get fault codes etc but I need a wiring diagram for the hitch. Anyone been in this situation before? Even if I can find out what pin to feed 12v to to get it to unlock and have it extended for the time being. I have the official BMW retrofit PDF but they don't really delve into the wiring. Thanks in advance to the wiring genius that can save me.

It's not $7k but it's also not a silly price....

Thats real nice. It has been very hard to stick to budget once you start browsing. I had to draw the line somewhere however if the car is right, i dont mind stretching a couple pennies.

Also, thanks everyone for the recommendations and TM links. Apart from the member saying to stay away from the BMWs ?. I'll digress by saying I've had years of trouble-free (TOUCHING WOOD) motoring from the aging fleet. The M52 E36 I currently daily is an absolute tank and hasn't missed a beat from the last 60,000kms I've owned it. Rigorous inspections, research and preventative maintanence are to blame I reckon with perhaps a touch of luck. With the current cars being the M52B28 swapped E30, E91 N52B25 & E36 M52B28 and 10 years as an aircraft technician, I'm no stranger to budgeting for maintenence (I wasn't triggered, I promise ?). Indeed I can see where you're coming from, but 95% of Japanese cars just don't do it for me and i'll be damned if i drive something and don't look back at it in the carpark.

So far I'm looking for a facelift M54 E46 touring or an E87 with a sidewards glance at the odd golf/polo (blasphemy).

123Ds are rocking horse teeth, and then an NZ new one? Hard to put a value on it, even in poverty pack 6.6k seems cheap to me. They have a good rep of going forever, and with a map are 130 levels of go fast.

Edit - actually not as rare as I thought, 57 E87 123s NZ new, like 138 123Ds of hatch/coupes in total in NZ.

More and more research into the N47 has put me off. I guess any motor has its issues if you dig deep enough but the timing chain seems to be a catastrophic one if it hasn't been serviced every 10,000kms and/or hasn't had the updated repair kit. Both of which is a mystery in this one.

I'm struggling to see how that car could have fewer options!

There was a facelift NZ new 123d with all the fruit that sold under lockdown for $7K - it was recently back up for sale for $15K

I'm assuming this one is cheaper due to the combination of mileage, no service history and the N47 timing chain and wastegate issues? Could be a risk I'm willing to take. Timing chain replacement looks to be an engine out jobby.

Owner/dealer looks to be short on details in the question but probably just busy.

From memory (posts on this page if I recall correctly) people are very wary of the e60 generation 5 series?

E87 ticks 90% of the boxes. Will line up a viewing.

    Thanks everyone
I ended up buying it, lowering it on einbachs and putting some 18" bbs reps on it

only thing I don't like is the way the back sits - I still feel like theres way too much space in the arch

Do you mind if I ask how much you ended up buying this for?
