I'm not sure, 5 years is towards the edge of feasibility in this market. Give me an OpenStack engineer with 2 years experience over somebody who drew a cloud on a whiteboard at an architecture conference 5 years ago any time.

The thing is these often aren't hard requirements. If I believe I can do the job based on the description I'll ignore the list of qualifications.

It depends entirely on job description/requirement. I concede OpenStack as a specific example hadn't been around very long then, but the point I was getting at is if the role is senior enough, 5 years of Cloud experience is perfectly reasonable. Even 5 years of OpenStack experience is reasonable, it's just limiting on your candidate pool, and you should consider bringing in high budgets for that, or re-assess what you really need. In fact, from the top contributor companies to OpenStack, I am fairly confident there is exactly one person in New Zealand who'd meet that description in a meaningful, and he's happily employed.

Anyway, Cloud is a special topic for me, and it's a biased view, but 5 years of actual working experience (not including having drawn a diagram five years ago...) is not unreasonable. Sorry.

EDIT: You're right that these are almost never hard requirements. Job descriptions are more like a wishlist. If you tick enough boxes, that's all that matters.

EDIT2: My pet peeve is jobs that ask for Masters degrees, or other irrelevant higher qualification.

One of the roles I went for wanted 5+ years experience of the cloud (!).  I think that there's a new breed of manager around that don't understand previous experience.... they want people who are similar to them ("millenials") but with 10 years more experience. It doesn't exist. I find that I can't communicate with the interviewers lately. Never had a problem before. Thank goodness I can  retire....

Hmm, depends how that's defined, I suppose, but EC2 was the first true 'cloud' (I'm a fan of the saying "There is no cloud, it's just someone else's computer...) offering, and that came out nearly 12 years ago. 5 years of Cloud experience, I'd want to see solid experience with OpenStack, AWS, OpenShift, etc, all of which are older than 5 years now... Docker is 5 years old, LXC is 9. Saying "Cloud experience 5+ years" means they want someone who doesn't just know Kubernetes/Azure, or who has been on the ground for these things for a long time relative to the technology. Granted, even working in this space, I know a handful of people who fit that description, but hey, if I'm looking for a senior person in that space, it isn't an unreasonable ask.

I thought about PMing you before I even listed it ?

There is a crack towards the rear that I gooed up - I suspect there is a crack at the front too - I put some silicone on the gasket, but it still dribbles out at times. It'll want another cover, either new or good used. Gabe has one for sale still - just check it's the right one - there are two types. I was going to put a new one on, but we decided to move to a 7 seater - we have a pair of VW Tourans now (Nerd alert!)

It's the same one. The M54 cover is the same through 9/2002 according to realoem.

    Thanks guys.

Yes, when it's off the car... I doubt it when it's on the car without removing the alternator and then I wouldn't be able to install the belt.

What did you have in mind?

Yes, that's what I was hoping (and expecting) to find but my housing doesn't have that hex... mine looks identical to the diagram. so slightly different to yours... :(

Mine is the original on the left, and the OEM replacement on the right. Can you post a picture of yours? I have seem a technique on youtube where you stick a star socket onto the pulley and turn. If you have no bolt... maybe that?

What's the recommended way to loosen belts with these types of mechanical tensioner?

Mine doesn't have a hex molded into the housing (not shown in this picture) so the only thing to "grab" is bolt #5 in the diagram... except that just spins. I can remove the whole unit and get the pulley (#3) off by undoing #5 and #7 but ultimately that's no help.

I realise I'd be better off upgrading to a hydraulic unit but I see no need to go to that expense since this one is holding tension just fine. I just can't loosen it to get a belt on.

    TIA.

Stick a shallow socket onto the 'bolt' built into the tensioner in the picture attached and turn. I forget what it is, but it's a regular size, maybe 16mm?

EDIT: Oh, yours don't look like these eh. Yeah, you be screwed. :)

    Ah, fun times...

Visited @Eagle - Jared (so helpful - thank you!) - and borrowed his cable.

At home, found I still had the same problem with the software, and found that I had to reconfigure the laptop to 'force' COM1 on to the USB portI was using. Got through that, and I have some mismatched software (I'll sort that later) with language settings being all over the place.

INPA is fun. Not especially intuitive, but once you get your head around it, it's great.

Cleared codes, tried again, no joy.

Re-read codes and this time the crux of the matter appears to be 4A63, something I've not seen reported by the Scanner 1.4.0.

4A63 is 'EWS Manipulation' - basically, the codes between the DDE and EWS have got out of synch. This could be due to a flat battery following trying to start the car before the fuel pump was replaced, which could be complicated by the ECU having been replaced by the previous owner (which would itself have required a re-synch).

This is where the fun starts as the language mis-match rears it's head: when navigating through INPA to 'Activate', I'm faced with some pretty unintelligible German instead of the English which had been present before! I'm presented with two options:

    1. zurückset - meaning 'reset to default'
    2. uebertragen - meaning 'transfer, transmit or broadcast

    I'll read the instructions. :)

@Gabe79 - I think this may be the issue you resolved for @zero ?

[I'll also retry the cable I have here, now that I have identified COM port config as being the potential issue I experienced before.]

So - still no joy, but I'm finding other things to try. I keep telling myself "To travel hopefully is a better thing than to arrive..." ?

This isn't the same issue. His issue was a lot more mundane.

Aye - whirr, but no vroom.

RESULT: 1 error in error memory !

    4A63 4A63 EWS Manipulation

Should be able to sort this with INPA.

Or Gabe is welcome to have a look; he suggested he might be able to help.

Of course, @aja540i may well have been right, too. :)

I think this is something you can resolve with INPA, or BMW Scanner. Have a look at a thread like this:

    https://www.bimmerforums.com/forum/showthread.php?2233690-Car-not-starting-after-reset-the-ews-dme-adaptations-with-BMW-Scanner

This is a relatively common issue, and you want to search for "e39 sync DME EWS" even some youtube videos around if this is the same issue.

So engine cranks but wont start?

Have you got another key you can try?

Maybe post your keys, ews etc to gabe?

I'm always happy to code up keys, but note I am out of keys right now. I'll order more once I am actually living in my own house again, in that fantasy day when the renovations end...

  7. The only thing to worry about nowadays is voltage requirements, but a lot of things are dual voltage anyway. Or is your question more logistics based?

If it's in original packaging, that's basically how they're shipped around the world...

I'll grant our stuff mostly came in a container from Singapore, not piecemeal though...
