I don't think it's that bad an idea, in the UK bars all close from anywhere from 11pm-4am with the exception of a very few and no-one really complains...i'd bet (like the age limit change) that if the laws had not been relaxed several years ago for 24hr licenses, that anyone would care if bars were still being made to close at 4am.

Arghhhhhh i can just imagine all the pain of drinking that Reminds me when i was a student and they had $15, 24 packs of Kakanui gold...my flat mates and myself ended up buying 100 dozen but realised afterwards after how Sh!t it tasted...Bravo might remember those beers!! This is the big problem we as a society have...i had the same mentality when i was younger and though am now a reasonably responsible drinker...many of my friends still have that same mindset. This is definitely one of the main issues and reasons why the new bill has passed and we dont even want to get into Foetal alcohol syndrome (FAS) and associated things with drinking and this age range.

On too it, this man! The whole point is too break the cycle, or the stupid Kiwi mentality that we (as a whole) have towards drinking in NZ. which is exactly what this new bill is aiming to do...of course it is not going to change things instantly and yes there will be certain age groups pissed off...but tell me, when the age went from 20-18 were there any 17 year olds shaking their heads...of course not but 10-11 years down the track everyone suddenly seems to realise that alcohol related everything, has more than trippled! Just another one of those things that no-one is going to be entirely happy about, i feel!

Fully agree, it's our culture of binge drinking which is the main problem and what is learn't from a young age. Education would help but it appears we are too far along for it too be really effective. From my experience in hospo, Asians binge just as much as any other culture, but generally speaking...get crunk than go home earlier on! Hard stuff is more expensive than rtd's...meaning more $$ = less availability to the really young.

I think more could have been done, but it is a definite first step! When the drinking age was 20 you were still having 17/18 year olds accessing alcohol but the 12-15 range was very very low as opposed to now when that range are able too access it more readily. Being a 17 year old you are obviously not going to be happy with any law changes surrounding alcohol. imo the biggest mistake was lowering the drinking age in the first place
