Palazzo 477 Report post Posted June 5, 2008 I always drive away from a place that insists on pre pay. Middle of the day in the city, WTF? Their loss at $150 a tank.
M325is 0 Report post Posted June 5, 2008 You can thank the thieves for pre-pay pumps. I once got denied petrol at Botany Shell because I parked my car so it was facing away from the shop, they told me they thought I was going to do a runner. The guy had to come and do it for me and then another escorted me to the counter, all because my petrol flap was on the wrong side to face inwards!! Pathetic! Made me feel like a crim for 15mins! Grant 4 Report post Posted June 5, 2008 Every station I have been too in the USA is prepay. Even when you fill up, they want the money first (at least what a fill up would cost, and they give you change). I think it is the way that we will be going here, so get used to it. Cheers Grant

bradc 0 Report post Posted June 5, 2008 If they enforce me to pre pay I just drive off and give them the fingers. I always dress cleanly and always look respectable, they have no reason to think I will steal petrol. I drive either a company car clearly signwritten, or my VR-4 which has a personalised plate. The company car is a 2006 Corolla, hardly likely to steal petrol in that now am I?
zenetti 0 Report post Posted June 5, 2008 was at Shell in NP at the weekend, the guy came out and said, and I quote "let me get that for you, how much would you like?" I just looked at him with the stupidest blank look on my face, I couldn't believe it! then he asked " are you from auckland?"................. Nah just kidding Anyway Shell gets my vote on that basis alone. I actually went back and put more fuel in on the Monday before I headed back, and I got the same response from a different guy. oh and I get Flybuys and airpoints on the visa etc etc etc
my_e36 43 Report post Posted June 5, 2008 Petrol stations in Hong Kong are full serviced. You are NOT allowed to fill your own car for some reason that I don't know. If you pay cash, you can just give it to the person filling the car up, so you can almost literally drive through. In NZ I use Shell because it's the closest to me (2x Shell stations within 1km of my home - WTF) and I have a Shell fuel card. Shell has the best service and at least someone will come trying/asking to help you 3 out of 5 times. Mobil and Caltax are tie for worst, Gull and BP are self-service at pump, but the shop service is ok. I sometimes use Gull for the bio-fuel. Back to topic, the Shell V-power here is different from overseas. In Hong Kong, they say the V-power there are of colour Blue and octane of 98+. I'd say the V-power here is just normal 95 with some unknown/secret additive. They said there is fuel-saving additive in Shell fuel last year, which I didn't realise any improvement, why would this time be any different?
Silver Fox 43 Report post Posted June 5, 2008 Drive a truck guys, prepay isn't an issue. I've never yet had a station not turn on the pump for me as soon as I put the nozzle in the tank and pull the trigger. Tend to use the Shell on Roscommon Rd, still the cheapest place in town, it and the Gull next door, use the Shell for the flybuys.
OLLIE 26 Report post Posted June 5, 2008 I sometimes use Gull for the bio-fuel.Please don't put that sh*t in your car!.... Prepay wouldn't be such an issue for me .. if the f**kin eftpos at pump worked! every time i go to fill up it's friggin broken!!

I can second that, every place in the States in pre-pay and the pumps are so slow.It took ages to fill our rental and you have to hold the thing constantly no lock thing like in nz. Prob 10+min to fill a Hyundai for about 10 gallons

hybrid 1043 Report post Posted June 6, 2008 Mobil cant prepay more than $99 .. err whats the point when petrol is 122 per tank! + they are retarded most of the time .. so I just dont bother BP I just stay at my local... they know me ...
Braeden320 0 Report post Posted June 6, 2008 I go to Mobil, Only due to a Fuel Card..I prefer to fill my own anyway.
Greg111 13 Report post Posted June 7, 2008 I use BP here in Hastings as they're the only place that sell 98, i prefer to fill up myself so petrol doesn't get spilt all down the side of the car aswell. With my other car i fill up at shell with 95, like everyone else....flybuys.
efirty 0 Report post Posted June 7, 2008 I have been going to the same shell station down the road from me since i got my licence. As soon as i pull in the pump is taken off pre-pay ready for me too fill. Also another time i had forgotten my credit card, the guy told me to just come back sometime during the day and pay. Also came out from paying one time and the forecourt attendant had washed all the windows on my car and had a cloth out wiping bird sh*t off the roof for me! Good service retains customers. sammaw 0 Report post Posted June 7, 2008 Hey Guys Very interesting discussion. I work for Shell International at the HQ in london. Passed this on to the Vpower team to try get you some answers. Ferrari only take shell fuel as we have sponsored them since they started. there is a whole department that looks at oil products for ferrari and there cars. I currently have a cut in half rally skoda from last season in my reception. It stars in the new tv ad. as of sept you should see the new helix ad dirty on the outside clean on the inside campaign. I am trying to get the car sent to NZ. There should be an old ferrari f1 in auckland viaduct at the moment.
jimbo01 0 Report post Posted June 7, 2008 My brother was running mobils race gas in his rally car for a season after being recommended it, when they pulled the engine apart at the end of the season it was f**ked, they went to mobile to get answers, not completely sure what the outcome was but they did pay up a bit. No more Mobil for our cars!! BP is just too expensive so Shell is my next best option with 500km/50L tank (95), sometimes further. I filled up with V Power this morning, i'm not sure if it was on special but it worked out cheaper then the 91 elsewhere. Will soon find out what its like. Bloody lucky if he got money out of them. Most racing car engines need some serious attention after a seasons racing. My brother just used Aviation gas in his rally car.
deeveus 81 Report post Posted June 8, 2008 It is Shells version of that Caltex cleaning gas. Just another bullshit marketing thing. The TV Ferrari add is pretty sweet though. Full length one anyway. Couldn't have put it better myself. One thing for sure is that the Ferrari race cars don't use normal road car fuel at any rate, don't they use like jet fuel? 100% octane? Jet fuel (avtur) I think is similiar to kerosene, and similiar in volatility to Diesel I think I think they use fuel similiar to Avgas which is from 100-130 octane which are alcohols- i.e. Methanol

CamB 48 Report post Posted June 8, 2008 (edited) Yeh my brother gets aviation gas to from ardmore, not sure why he was using mobil that season. Motorsport NZ have been stuffing around with the rules and it may be that he wasn't allowed to run Avgas - it depends on the championship. Plus, Avgas is leaded (its over 100 octane IIRC), so not ok for cars with catalystic converters or oxy sensors. But it smells awesome, and is (comparatively) cheap.
