How much do you spend on your pride and joy

Recommended Posts

Not your daily - the car you love, pamper, cherish and mod.

I have a detailed spreadsheet for all my cars that details all costs, service dates and mileages with the exception of fuel costs.

In 3 years of ownership of the e30, here is a breif summary:

3year toal/avg p.a

Oil, air, fuel filters, diff, trans and coolant: $450/150

Other repairs and maintenance as things break/wear out - includes tyres and wheel alignments: $3500/$600 (last year I had a major repair that skews the total)

Modifications: $11,000/$3,000

Insurance: $2,500/$600

WOF/Reg: $800/$290

Guesstimated Fuel: $5,000/$1,800 based on 10,000kms a year

Total cost of ownership including all mods, purchase price, fuel, and all R&M is about $27,000.

I have missed alot of smaller items like cleaning products and things I pick up but forget to put on the spreadsheet. it also doesn't include my own labour (probably a couple of thousand hours???) tools, and sundry costs (like hiring a trailer to pickup the car I bought to get my tech II kit).

How about you?

Adding up my receipts and bits was a bad idea :(

Could've bought a E36M3 that'd be a lot faster

I would be too scared to make a spreadsheet like that!

However, I don't spend much on my ride. The warranty company pays for any repairs and I'm not into modding - stock is good with me. So I'd say about $500 - $1000 per year, being regular servicing, registration and consumables such as tyres.

I'm standing at about $25,000 without labour for my 328Ti Manual and I need to spend a little more. Head lining and a bit of paint on the skirts and repaint the front spoiler

Lol, I guess sometimes it's a good thing not owning an M car.

Since Aug 08 I have spent $3,398.80 on fuel. Travelled approx 18,000k, 1782L of fuel.

Yay spreadsheets.

I don't have one for maintenance yet, have been meaning to make one but have not got around to it.

in the 2 years of owning this e30 im up to 17k, off the top of my head so probebly a bit more. this includes mods, rego, some of the large services i can remember and some rust removal.

This does not include buying the car and petrol.

looking at it its kind of depressing but it just gives me more reason to keep it

E30 (in 9 months of ownership) $9k including purchase

KE20 (in 2 years building from scratch) $10k

But i also brought a ke20 parts car which i am now selling parts off so making alot of money back

neither includes servicing, cleaning products or fuel costs ,

cars are the devil haha

Spent about 4 grand on the E36 on top of purchase price. About to spend close to 2 grand on the E30... new cam, head studs, replace fuel pump, fix leaking gearbox seal etc.

I have a "TO FIX" list in my glovebox which I add to most days. *sigh*. Oh well, it's half the fun I guess!

Around $6000 in last 12 months on maintenance and a new set of tires.

And around $100 on fuel every 7 to 10 days.

A question for you spreadsheet folks - Why do you keep such a sheet running?

For me, seeing such a sheet on a weekly basis would be very depressing!

For you business owners, I doubt you would be able to depreciate mods on your car and claim them back, the IRD wouldn't look too happily at spending that wasn't strict repairs and maintenance. However, I figure it could be good for insurance purposes to negotiate a higher payout should your car be written off and could also be good for resale - but most buyers would want to see receipts.

Interested for your insight!
