e30 Schnitzer-Gavins Magic

Recommended Posts

So yesterday schnizzle got its birthday present courtesy of Gavin at

Posted Image

Remember this is a totally stock 325 engine.

We had already fitted Wayneys headers so Gavin estimated that a stock, good condition 325 would be producing 95rwkw.

So heres the first test run with headers

Posted Image102kw

And here is the result after Gavin had worked his magic (for 4 hours). At one point he had it up to just over 110kw but felt it might be a little fragile so backed it off a little.

Posted Image108.7kw

Posted Image145.7HP

Total Gain=13.7kw.

Conclusions: I was lucky in that I had to drive back to Hastings today so got to give it a severe thrashing & check out the performance differences.

The most obvious change is in the amount of torque it now produces right across the board-it just pulls (and keeps pulling)like a team of schoolboys haha.

Secondly the driveability is completely different-the power comes on much more smoothly right across the rev range & keeps going right up to the rev limiter.

Probably very little difference in off the mark acceleration-but once you hit 3500-4000 revs it just winds up.

So,was it worth it?

You bet your sweet life it was-every penny of it !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I am seriously impressed-thanks to Gavin & Wayne.

You couldn't tell me the approx price for what Gavin did, thinking about a remap later in the year.

PM me if you like.

P.S, Looking forward to seeing this little beast soon.

Where did the 13.7kw gain come from? If you're taking the gain from the estimated 90rwkw figure, that's an 18.7kw gain... or from the first run then it's a 6.7kw gain.

Regardless, that's a pretty good showing from headers and a remap. Accounting for the generally accepted 20% drivetrain power loss you're putting out 10hp more at the flywheel than factory figures.

I think its a pretty standard fee so I'm sure he wont mind me quoting it here-$800+gst which looks like cheap HP to me.

Talking to my tech today who did the header install & he is of the opinion that our estimated 95 rwkw is optimistic for a stock motor.

Does anyone have any definitive numbers on this?

From the odd dyno's and info floating around the net i think 95 rwkw is about right. Mine was 140bhp @ wheels before chipped and rebuild bottom with everything stock except wayne's headers.

Here are some dyno sheets if you want to compare. Link

looking at your results your engine must be in mint condition if you compare them to these.

Thanks Luke-thats interesting-that shows stock at 85rwkw & 95 after the alpina mods.

OK so heres something else to ponder.

I talked to Gavin about fitting a Pod & cold air box & he explained (in technical terms that I didnt really understand lol) that given the degree of tune there was no benefit to be gained. In fact he was of the opinion that it could possibly have a detrimental effect.

Your thoughts?

Couple i found, stock engines. Those seem quite low. Diff dyno's do give diff results thou

Stock power accounting for drivetrain loss is 101kw or 136hp

So given that is for a brand new engine... I'd think around 95kw is reasonable, given that some of those dyno charts posted of stock engines are putting out similar numbers.

Wow, that's a really nice gain for the price. Wonder if fuel economy improves?

Traditionally Aussie dynos seem to read proportionately less than our dynos. No idea the reason why, but a stock WRX usually pulls around ~100kw atw over there
