325i touring log

Recommended Posts

As you probably know I bought the E30 325i touring that Boyce recently had for sale.... it used to look like this:

However when I grabbed it it was without the wheels or suspension.

The car is an ex Ray 1990 uk import automatic with 19xxxx miles on the body and a replacement SA engine (m20b25 motronic). Grey cloth recaros, se side skirts, fogs, check control, elec sunroof and front windows, air con, alarm, remote central locking (that actually totally works - a first out of the 4 e30s I've owned), immo, 12 stack cd... I think thats all.

The plan (in no particular order) is to lower it again and put some period 15/16/17" wheels on it (preferably 16s), convert it to manual, tidy up the interior, do some maintenance, fit a go faster exhaust, get some alright sounds, tidy up the interior, and fit mtech bits front and rear.

Max

The first thing I did was scoot off to Gavin at Euro Italian for a new cambelt, tensioner, and seals as the car needed a new waterpump (which was included with the car purchase). Gavin and co always seem to have everything and their prices are excellent! Then it was off to Glenn at Botany to have it done properly. What I really like about Glenn's place is that when you come to get the car he takes the time off to give you a thorough explanation of what's gone on. Thanks Glenn!

Glenn kindly gave the car a check over at the same time and identified a few minor issues that I hadn't spotted - the car had a hesitation and cold starting issue due to a severely worn dizzy cap and worn rotor that had subsequently damaged the coil. Before I could replace these I went off to Taupo for the weekend, luckily the car didn't play up except for one hesitation on the motorway and a hard start in the morning. As a side note I got 7.86 l / 100k on the way back on sh1 without trying on shell 95, so pretty stoked with that.

Old dizzy cap:

Coil arcing to power terminal (note white stuff):

I did the dizzy stuff when I got back, it was pretty easy, but dizzy caps are pricy!

Other stuff:

I swapped the seat back of the recaros so the one with a worn bolster is on the passenger side - very easy. the Passenger seat rails were also seized so I took the seat out to discover there was a $1 coin stuck in there. Score.

I need a new sunroof cover in grey, anyone?

Posted Image

The boot - notice how the tail lights are fixed to the body rather than the lid? Bit silly imo. Fog lights removed to replace bulbs.

I've had these ground control / eibach coilovers for ages but I'm not sure if its worth putting them in this what with all the welding and cert issues. I think I will get some vogtland springs as I like the way Apex's touring sits. Does anyone want these?

Tech1 front dummy fit, I need to get some of them fancy i-torx sockets to remove the bumper:

Random photo with my other e30... back into dual E30 ownership :D

I just bought this manual conversion of skidz which, with a bit of luck, will be here before this weekend and fitted by Sunday evening!

I've also got my eye on some inexpensive 15" BBS wheels which I hope to have by Friday and should look nice with a tidy up. 15x7et25.

My shopping list:

- Silver drivers side mirror

- mtech 2 rear apron

- grey sunroof interior cover

- Rear bilsteins / eibachs / other stiff e30 shock (already have fronts)

- Grey cloth recaro seat back

Thanks for reading.

^Dunno Sam. If someone whos bought some to nz could pipe up with how much it was I could figure out a price from there. To clarify, they have never been used and do not come with the shocks and adjustable strut tops.

Cheers guy, not overly keen on an unmint one to be honest as there are loads of wrecked E30s around with sunroofs.

Nice one Max.

Go the Tourings!

Cool to see more touring projects!

Do the pfl spoilers bolt on without any adjustments?

I don't really think of this as a project, in fact I believe this needs a lot less work than most e30s on the road :) But there's always something to do with these. According to the internet the pfl front bolts right on but the rear needs to be cut. I'l confirm once I've done it.

ps. We should gather the tourings on bs and go for a... tour. Apex, Cale, Isis, sir e30, brook-e30, mash... t'would be quite a sight..

Cheers

Good stuff Max.

If you ever need a hand with removing and refitting the rear int panelling give me a call and im happy to help out, there is a easy way to do it in a sequence, stuff it up and its really easy to damage everything.

If you want to have a drive of mine to get an idea as to how the Boge Turbo ? Vogtlands combo works let me know.

Also keen on your Coil Over’s for my Touring if it doesn’t sell, I have evil stage two plans for it.

Edit: Good on you for picking up this car and giving it the loving it deserves! Tourings are becoming rarer.. As seen by the one that got parted on trademe. Ten points ^_^

Flywheel balanced, machined and lightened to 6.8kg and pressure plate skimmed and balanced by Bob at Balancing Specialists. He's well priced ($160 for the above), and great to chat with so I highly recommend him. New sachs clutch in there too ($170).

Also picked up some 15x7 et25 BBS RAs off a mk2 gti.

Just need a couple of tools to finish off the manual conversion and sump gasket replacement then I'l put the RAs on. If anyone has an engine support bar I could borrow that would be awesome.

Does the goo replace the gasket? or is it just to help the gasket make a seal?

Looks good Max, Keep it up mate!
