Considering where England are, I can understand your cynicism Jon, must be hurting.

So, give them a chance Jon, and celebrate where your adopted country has got to, you might even enjoy being on the bandwagon?

Foxy, the hardest part to take about that England shambles was the fact that half the team weren't even trying. If they had played their hearts out, so be it, but to wander about aimlessly for 90mins in NOT acceptable.

Funny thing is I have had more excitement watching the All Whites so far this tournament! I did not want to come across as knocking the team, they have done exceptionally well and are performing far, far above their individual abilities (its called TEAMwork England - take note). It was more at the escalating levels of expectation from bandwagoners and the chance that it will all turn sour very quickly on Friday (but hopefully not).

Just as a side note, if you remember the Manfield round, the All Whites game was on the Sat. night, and I stayed at home to watch it with my old man (had it not been Manfield I would have been at the cake tin with my neighbours), so officially I am already on the bandwagon, and have been for somewhile.

Ollie, I think you are getting a bit carried away with it all, yes they are on a roll, but having to beat Paraguay is a big, big ask. I'm not going to make any silly bets with you, look what happened to the last guy that did that  !

Still a lot of football to be played yet, and a long way to go in the tournament, no-one ever won the world cup by playing well in the group games!!

Make no mistake, the match vs Paraguay is going to be the toughest challenge we have had yet..

When I said I'd put my money on NZ, I didn't mean that I thought it was the safest bet ...

Like I said anything can happen and I'd rather have my money behind the team I want to win, rather than the team that has more chance of winning ... besides my ROI is better if I'm successful

The TV coverage that the All Whites are getting in the US is amazing. Both games have been played live on four different channels where I am (albeit two of them in Spanish). The games have also been on at breakfast time (kick off at 7.30am).

The highlights of both games have also been on all of the network news broadcasts.

It also seems that nearly everyone I run into that knows I'm a Kiwi wants to talk soccer with me. I even had one guy ring me at about 4.30am while he was at a casino in Tahoe and the in-house sports bookie was offering him 120:1 for the All Whites to beat Italy and 80:1 for a draw. Stupidly I didn't ask him to put any money on it (ain't hindsight a wonderful thing).

Yep, just as long as we don't start expecting them to win :P

Paraguay beat both Brazil and Argentina in their qualification and have looked bloody sharp. Will be super, super, super stoked if the All Whites can pull this one off. Almost unimaginable feat for NZ football to make the top 16 in the world lol

The trick Jon, is to go in with hope but not expectation, and then bask in the glory when it comes to fruition.

Exactly!

Some further perspective.

"If football transfer fees are any guide, Paraguay striker Roque Santa Cruz is worth more than 35 times the entire All Whites squad."

Very true, Foxy, very true.

However, everyone knows that for many years "England expects".. <_<

Oli, I think you would get better odds at the TAB, and they would be able to afford to give you your winnings!

Considering where England are, I can understand your cynicism Jon, must be hurting.

Growing up, I also was a round ball player, and used to get hell from my mates in those days for playing soccer. I played for 45 years for the same club, only retiring when I started the E30 racing game 4 years ago, the body was saying enough.

When growing up I used to watch Match of the day every week, and always supported England, I mean, NZ was never going anywhere then.

So, give them a chance Jon, and celebrate where your adopted country has got to, you might even enjoy being on the bandwagon?

sh*t Dave - so you were growing up until four years ago :P

Seriously though, I take my hat off to these guys for efforts to date & do "hope" but not " have expection" for them to win come Friday

I think its awesome that we are competing so well at an international level.

With regards to the "band wagon" comments, football has been growing in NZ (especially/mainly Wellington) for the last couple of years with the Phoenix. Its great that New Zealanders are getting behind their team. I'm finding it much more exciting than watching the All Blacks play the same 5 or 6 teams every year.

Don't be haters - it sounds too much like tall poppy syndrome

EDIT: bang wagon to band wagon oops

From looking at the stats here is my most optimistic prediction.

NZ gets through to next round in second place. Has to play the Netherlands. Gets ass handed to them. Well done for getting that far. Tall Poppy Bandwagoners get off at next stop.

I like this one,

Herbert said other coaches at the World Cup "must laugh" at his $50,000 salary. "They are no different to me, but they're getting $1.5m and will get no points."

I see more people are getting on the Argentina bangwagon, maybe we should've closed the poll at the start of the cup lol. Also still think the vuvuzela's are the most annoying thing to hit sports since Murray Mexted.

Sports betting imo should be for a laugh, when you take it too serious that's when problems begin...i put a $100 at the start of the WC for NZ to make the finals...if the doawesome for me if they don't it's a night out i miss out on

Dutch are looking good but so were the Italians, if NZ topple Paraguay...My moneys on NZ

I'm proudly on the bandwagon, I don't see an issue with this. I also don't think it has anything to do with tall poppy syndrome.

To be honest, I can't really take to soccer, and find it on the most part pretty dull. However, I am excited that New Zealand is doing well and punching well above its weight. I have watched the two games so far and am heading to the pub to watch the Paraguay game at 7.00 tomorrow morning and am excited by it.

When New Zealand bows out of the tourney (which may be tomorrow) I will cease my soccer watching until the next World Cup, providing New Zealand qualifies.

I'm much the same for most other sports that I don't normally show an interest in that New Zealand from time to time does well in. Whether it be equestrian, rowing or womens shot put I will watch with pride as New Zealand does well on the world stage.

A few things I learnt last night which may come in handy for others tonight...

1) It's very dis-orientating to get woken by your alarm at 1.45am, and putting Sky / TV, etc. onto the right channel is ten times more difficult than normal! Noted for tonight.

2) Celebrating a goal without waking the rest of the family is VERY, VERY hard, silent "glory runs" are almost impossible to perform. Hopefully more practice tonigh to get better at it.

3) Drinking Stella and eating Twisities for 2 hours then makes it hard to go back to sleep! Oh well, it's only for a few more weeks...

One through, one to go (fingers xd).

Aussie - LOL, France, LMMFAO!!
